The OA (2016)
An ending only the NRL could love
Production values- tick Acting- tick Pace - slow but good - tick Ending? - Crap
If you want to watch a TV series whose final minutes appear to legitimatise mass school shootings then go ahead and watch.
Personally, I want 8 hours of my life back.
Only in America...
If only they had sent off the script for the final episode to be completed by a Brit writer.
And I am really peeved that IMDb tells me that I have made a spelling error by use an 'ise' ending rather than a 'ize' one.
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
American cinema is back!
And thank goodness! If you are tired of multiplex fodder and want to see a real film, then do yourself a favor (and this cultural imperialist site will NOT let me spell this word properly with a "u") and see Little Miss Sunshine. With an ensemble cast, excellent writing and fantastic cinematography - this film is certain to become a classic.
And don't believe reviews that claim this movie is about a 'dysfunctional' family - this family does function - albeit oddly. Their need to push start their aging VW Kombi being a brilliant metaphor for how this family pulls together in times of need.
It seems 'cultural mores' give this movie an "R" rating in the US - but I would not hesitate to allow my 15 y.o. to see it - the underlying themes and messages are important ones to carry home to teenagers - and this movie is the vehicle to do it.
The denouement scene of the pageant is to die for.
This movie will be a DVD "keeper"
Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars (2004)
Thanks for the closure
OK - firstly a BIG thank you to the US fans who made this mini-series happened after the (premature) cancelling of the show. Your actions even made news here!
And also pity us Au fans - where despite Farscape being made locally and full of extras with Aussie accents, it's not even shown here any more. Again it's thanks to US fans (and the wonders of VCR's and the postal service) that any of us have seen past series 2. And it was thru a friend that I was able to watch the Peacekeeper Wars.
OK - I am happy, but yes the narrative felt rushed. Couldn't you just imagine the "wedding interrupted" gag running for a whole season?? *g* Also the pregnancy, most of the mini-series had Rygal pregnant, when it was meant to be only the FIRST "quadmester".
But still, the miniseries held together well, and gave us fans the closure we sorely needed. In fact it was so good (even if it DID skate the edges of "cheesy" occasionally) that I suspect people seeing it for the first time would be drawn to see the entire series. And so they should - Farscape is the smartest and funniest scifi series ever made.
Well done to cast and crew (particularly the writers) and thanks again to you American fans. Long live Farscape - if they EVER get around to releasing it all on DVD here I would buy the lot. It's a "keeper".
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Take the kids or just take yourself!
There are very few movies that can engross both adults AND children without relying on dodgy double entendres to keep the adults amused. This is not a "kid's film" or even a "family film", it is "film" that adults will love, and if they happen to have kids, well, you can take the kids. They will love it too!
My 6 year old sat rock still for the entire 2 hours. She was mesmerised (as was I). The 10 year old was slightly more critical - the soundtrack did not meet with his approval (is it different in the Japanese version?) but still, the narrative and animation had him in its grip. Despite the daggy music, he was enthralled too.
This movie is stunning. I can't wait for the DVD. Any aussies reading this - put the movie on your "must see" list this summer holidays.
