Without Remorse (2021)
I havent seen this movie...
...so I have no reason to either review or grade it, but the synopsis written here Does make me wanna say something.
"An elite Navy SEAL, goes on a path to avenge his wife's murder only to find himself inside of a larger conspiracy. "
Exchange "elite navy seal" with a "boy scout cop in New York", and you get Max Payne (which had an Awful movie adaptation as well), so yeah - Im gonna pass...
Louis C.K.: Live at the Beacon Theater (2011)
This must be the pettiest thing ever...
... but I could NOT get past the first 5 minutes, and it was NOT because of the material - it Was because it is shot HORRIBLY. The Material overall probably is great - CKs stuff usually is - but Holy Cow he made All the wrong choices for such a performance, at least based on what I saw.
I mean the Constant close-up on C. K. without Any shots of the audience, despite there being multiple angles and jumpcuts of the comedian, makes the performance feel Not Live, contrary to the title, and that Ironically is Not helped by the pristine audio of the audience, which makes an already lifeless show feel absolutely sterile. Yeah, I definitely cant recommend watching this, so listening probably is the only way to go if youre interested what Louis had to say in 2011...
First Ascent (2010)
An interesting insight into one of the most extreme, yet thoughtfull sports out there.
As a non-climber, I was quite intrigued by "Free Solo", due to it's showcase of Alex Hannold's Mindset, along with the thoughts of other climbers featured - not to mention the sport is visually stunning, if we are talking cinema-wise, so a big screen and a good sound system is a Must.
A couple of other climbing documentaries later I figured I wanted to see Hannold's ascent of "Half Dome". and since this series documented it in the first Episode, I decided to give it a try. Not only the Ep was great, but it also convinced me to check out the rest of the show, and I was Not disappointed.
With that said,"Point of no Return" stood out from the rest, and while I found it really engaging anyway, one thing in particular made me actually Rate it here (I usually don't rate separate Ep's). Personally, I think it's Especially worthwhile if you are an aspiring climber yourself, and I recommend to see it Even if the rest of the show does not interest you (which doesn't feel like a possibility for somebody into the sport).
Anyway, I didn't see any other reviews for this show, so I truly recommend it to anybody interested in climbing, or anybody who wants to take a look at the philosophy of people daring enough to partake in the sport.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Yeah... I liked it.
To clarify, I liked it a lot, especially since I thought I would hate the movie going into it. If some might think "why is that?", then I will give just 2 reasons: 1) Larsons self perceived "activism", and 2) I had read one person saying the movie felt like a 2 hour "women are better than men" comercial. Mind you, I was a bit drunk while watching the movie, and little inebriation usually makes me even more aware of such "subtle" life lessons.
With that said, yes - the movie had its moments of "arent men pigs?" with the stereotypical, yet somehow understandable inclusion of lines like "You know why they call it the "cockpit", right?", and some of the music choices came across a bit clunky (for example, using the No Doubt song at a particular moment felt somewhat ironic, considering that only the singer in the band was female), as well as some other points that just screamed "GirlPowaaah!!!"...
...yet I liked it.
It Definitely did Not demonize men, as I was expecting it to do, though, on the other hand, how could it have, when it had Nick Fury as the other big character in the story. I think the makers were aware they would get Crucified by the MCU fans, if they tried to make Jackson play "a man, tainted with toxic masculinity, sees the light once a women shows him the errors of his ways".
Larsons performance did not scream to me that it was Her portraying, in my opinion, a sympathetic, yet humanely flawed character. I doubt the character was consistent throughout, but I really dont care about that in this instance, since I just really wanted her to be likeable enough for her presence not to spoil End Game, and in that regard I can say my expectations were surpassed, to be honest. Whatever I might think of Larsons political agenda, I cant deny she did a really good job portraying the character to the extent, that I might even be interested in a sequel, should it come at some point, and I really didnt feel her performance to be as wooden as some people make it out to be.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Along with Vers and Fury, Talos was a character I really enjoyed, though his introduction felt somewhat illogically clashing with the later revelation he is the good guy.
Oh, and of course, Jude Law Yon-Rogg was a treat as well, despite my disappointment when it became clear during the first 25 minutes that he actually is be the bad guy. Also, I hope this whole Kree/Skrull conflict wasnt meant as a metaphor for the conflict between the West and Islamic State, since that would make this movie not only ridiculously "woke", but actually a damaging and dangerous piece of propaganda.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!
Still, as I wrote in the beginning, the movie has its obvious "We are woke, and you just have to deal with it" moments, as well as some other things, that might not be good from a film making perspective, and it is pretty predictable, despite the beginning feeling like a pretty cool head-trip, ala Doctor Strange.
All in all, though, I just wanted to enjoy the movie and, surprisingly, I did. so thats more than good. Now, with that out of the way, there is just one last thing unresolved... at least till the end of April...
