Thief (1981)
Thief delivers!
One of my all time favorites! Best casting ever. Yes, I'm a huge Michael Mann fan! He did Miami Vice and many others. I can watch this over & over. They don't make movie's like this anymore. Most of the great actors are retired today in 2020. Plot is strong, I believe The actors, so natural, so we'll delivered. String story of a man who spent half his life institutionalized. Out in his late 30's he's running out of time to make a life with his new wife & child. His mob connection is his obstacle. I love this movie!
Walking Tall (2004)
The Rock, Rocks!
A big fan of the original Walking Tall, this remake was a very good one! Johnny Knoxville added some very needed comic relief as the original movie was just way, way too sad. Neal McDonough is our generations consummate bad guy as is Kevin Durand and Michael Bowen (see Breaking Bad). Ashley Scott sizzles as The Rock's love interest. What I really connected with is the town. Logging has been banned, casinos have replaced them as the #1 tax revenue source. In the Pacific Northwest- same thing has happened (throw in government buerocrat jobs). The fighting & bloody violence is intense as is the strong sense of good vs evil. An R rating for good reason, the action sequences are near perfect and believable. I'd expect to see this movie rating at least a 9!

Planet of the Apes (1968)
Man looks for something better than man
OK, I'm 58 & i grew up on the ape movies. I was 10 when this move hit theaters. SPOILER ALERT! So 4 astronauts take off from earth in the future to explore. Houston there's a problem! They splash land into a body of water in an unknown planet. They all wake up from their "suspended animation tubes" & the only woman is already dead. Trouble is they don't know what planet they are in. Really? Theses scientists, these star gazers have no clue? I still like this movie because Charltan Heston (my President) was the action hero of his time. He headlined all the major movies in the 50's through even the 70's. He was tall, lean, blonde & kicked butt. Nobody at that time had ever come up with such a radical idea in sci-fi as the ape movies. It defined the age & even had its own "Raquel Welch type" (Linda Harrison) scantily clad eye-candy character. I wont nit-pick anymore obvious flaws in the story line. My wish is that Hollywood would stop with their re-makes using too much GFI ¬ enough story line. The newest ape movies are o.k. but they are sorely lacking in authenticity. I loved this movie!
Affliction (1997)
The last great actors movie of the last millennium
One of the last "actor's movies"of the last Millennium. Every cast member was totally believable. Nick Nolte's character is familiar having known lots of cops & the realization they are human & have problems just like him. Warning: this sheriff has one foot on each side of the law, smokes weed, is divorced, alcoholic & foul-mouthed. Not a role model cop! I loved James Coburn's role as the abusive, alcoholic father of Nolte's character. But then I've always loved Coburn watching him since I was a kid in movies such as The Great Escape, In Like Flint among others. Sissy Spaces delivers a spot-on performance as well. This movie is hard to watch especially if you have suffered parental abuse (non-sexual). But, I can relate to men of that era. The WWII generation men won the war and they didn't do it by sending their kids to learn tap dancing- they taught their sons how to work-even in freezing weather. You know back when men were men, women were women & nobody had to ask.
Christian Mingle (2014)
Finding Him while finding him
I liked this movie. In a day of CGI Action movies on steroids this one is a throw back to a simpler time "lonely girl desperately seeking love". The difference here is that this movie is clean, no hookups, no drugs, no murders. Some reviewers need to lighten up & have fun with movies.
Gweneth, signs up for CM, a Christian dating site only she's not practicing. She meets Paul, an honest, regular young Christian fella. Paul is portrayed as being straight & boring but it fits (I've met lots of young Christian fellas & Paul IS them, very believable). Gweneth begins to study the Bible. Paul doesn't eat sushi -definitely not cool. Gweneth's prayers are clumsy & awkward but whose aren't? It's cute and innocent. But, all the red flags go off with Paul's mom. Gweneth has trouble at work & takes off on an impromptu visit to Paul who is on a mission trip to Mexico. That's when the truth comes out - Gweneth is a fake, doesn't know her Bible. Thats where I stop because i'm recommending you watch this movie!
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
The Shining meets Hansel & Grettle?
Loved this authentic set & 1630 old English. Banished from the security of the settlers fort, this family of 7 becomes 6 when babby Samuel is snatched in broad daylight right in front of the eldest daughter Tomasins's watchful eye. Obviously, mom spends this tale in deep, deep mourning while blaming Tomasin's sins for losing Samuel.was it the Witch? If so which witch? Father, the strong lead, tries to hold it all together ever faithful their misfortunes are God's plans. Now the Witch shows up as a rabbit. Later Caleb is lured to the Witches coven where she appears as a beautiful woman, perfect for a young curious prepubescent lad. He returns back to their home buck naked. The two twins, unlike in The Shining, speak & play throughout the movie & provide comic relief. Caleb appears to be possessed as the whole family prays over him for a sort of an exorcism -it fails (that's #2 child lost). Tomassin is again scape goated into leaving home, after all she's just bad luck. Tomasin points out Father can't hunt nr dance & mother wears the pants in the family. Not that Tomasin is an angel -this girl can spin a yarn! Watch this movie to the end!
The Harvest (2013)
Misery meets Hand that rocks the cradle
Yes, this movie has a few familiar actors. I loved the small town feel & the old house where Andy lives with his doctor mother & nurse father- there's a twist- goodbye Marcus Welby M.D. All Andy wants is a friend to play baseball with. His health & his parents both prevent this from happening. Is having professional parents that don't have the time to raise you worse than those that keep you home in bed seemingly sacrificing their careers to "nurse you back to health". The girl-next door might be the hero in this tale if her grandparents would simply believe her. This was an unpredictable plot, save for the movie title. This is a creepy one. Beware!
Fireproof (2008)
Fireproof is just that -Fireproof
This may contain a spoiler or two. I've see a lot of "God movies". This one stands out as one of those that is so well written, so sweet that it deserves a watch. You don't have to be a believer to enjoy this film. Anyone who enjoys watching LMN for example will see a variety of movies that may or may not contain faith in God. But, the storyline is so much a contemporary situation namely a young married couple who have drifted apart. Different goals in life, different levels of faith (or none at all) and of course limited financial resources to satisfy both of their needs and desires. Kurt Cameron is spot-on in this role, no one could have been better. The actress playing his wife does a great job as well. I believe in this crazy mixed up world this movie sends a strong message to the believers and the unbelievers that married people should always consider counseling even if it's only one of the two that's committed to saving the marriage. As with AA, folks are encouraged to see the help of a "higher-power" and that makes perfect sense to me.
God's Not Dead (2014)
God's not dead is excellent!! Go see this film!!
My wife and I really enjoyed this movie! The characters portrayed were very believable especially Kevin Sorbo as the angry, elitist, atheist professor (my wife and I both had a few of those in college). He abuses all those "little people" in his life who either disagreed with him, do not have his level of education or have faith in God. The young man who portrayed the student in question who was forced to defend his faith was also excellent. Even this young man's girlfriend, also a believer in God also presented a challenge to him. This also leads into the main plot element of the movie that is - a believers' largest challenge in life may not always come from "outside the faith". Also, we really love the music of Michael Tait, who joined the Newsboys a few years ago, so that was an added bonus for us. Our advice is whether or not you are a believer- it does not matter -go see this film.
