Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Oh this seems like it is going to be great.. CRINGE!
The first half of this episode was written by a team of talented writers. They setup the characters and the story line with expert skill. You can clearly see that this is going to be a great episode...
Then they dropped off the script at a random 9 year old girls house and asked her to finish it up for them. She said she had homework and wasn't really interested in writing anyway. They told her not to worry about it and that they would produce anything she could scribble down on scratch paper whenever she had the time. She refused. They told her they has a HUGE Netflix budget and would pay her 1 millions dollars for anything she wrote. Her mother then intervened and forced the little girl to write the second half of the episode against her will.
Yes, I made that story up. And yes, it is a much better story than this piece of utter tripe that Black Mirror made me wait two or three years for. What a complete disappointment. Why has Black Mirror forsaken me???
Comedians of the World (2019)
Some great stuff and some of the worst all rolled into one show for some reason.
First off you need to address the audience for this show. The were just awful. I do not know where they got these people or what was wrong with them but they would not know funny if it bit them on the face. Neal Brennan did one of the best sets I have ever seen him do and they barely clapped for him. Not sure if it was the subject matter or what, but they seemed very sensitive. When recording these specials the audience is pretty important. No matter how funny or skilled a comedian is, the audience ultimately sets the mood. This audience was like a dead fish for most of the comics.
The next problem is the mix of comedians. They have some incredible comedians mixed in with people that should never hold a microphone. I think most people will find themselves just skipping some of these comics about 4 minutes into their sets. But one thing is for sure, these comics do not belong on the same stage together.
Here were my individual ratings (1 to 10) for the US and Canadian comics sets. There are many more but this will give you a start.
1. Neal Brennan 9 Just a great set. The audience did not seem to like the subject matter but F them. Great writer and great stand-up.
2. Chris D'Elia 8 I have seen better from him but this was still good. Great comic.
3. Nicole Byer -1 I don't have words to describe how terrible she is. She just screams and laughs at her own "jokes". No thank you.. ever.
4. Nick Swardson 5 I have seen him so much better than this. Just a bad day?
5. DeAnne Smith 6 Not my type of humor but pretty good. Crowd liked her.
6. Ivan Decker 8 Never seen him before. Thought he was excellent.
7. Dave Merheje 3 Lot of screaming + Adderall? + bad material = not good.
8. K. Trevor Wilson 7 I found this guy pretty amusing. Interesting style.
All in all I would suggest giving this show a chance. Just make sure you keep the remote in your hand and a finger on the ff.
Weapon of Choice (2018)
A moronic attempt at an anti-gun documentary?
I am not particularly pro or anti guns. I do, however, live in Chicago and can assure you that the Glock company is not the problem here. If Glocks did not exist, or just decided to shut down production tomorrow, Smith & Wesson or some other manufacturer would take their place.
This "documentary" attempts to convince you that Glock is an evil company and is responsible for all kinds of horrible things. Once you weed your way through all the nonsense and political tripe you are left with the only thing that might be factual in this abomination; Glock seems like a great product.
They really do a great job selling you a Glock in this thing. I am not in the market for a gun, but if I were, they make some good points for buying Glock. It has a reputation for being reliable under the worst of conditions. Police, military, gun store owners and gun sales people seem to covet this gun. Even the poor people on the South Side of Chicago pay out the extra cash for the Glock. I found myself surfing the Glock website while this was playing on my TV (I was bored). I like the subcompacts personally. Maybe a G26 or G27? Apparently every criminal and every cop in the city of Chicago seems to have one. I guess I need one too?
Long winded, misguided, Glock commercial.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Somehow got me to watch 17 minutes of a musical
It said Cohen bothers.. so I watched. After about 17 minutes I realised I was watching a musical. I can never forgive the Cohen brothers for this.
Many have tried to get me in the past.. Family Guy.. Southpark. But I was always able to avoid the musical episodes or was warned prior to watching feature length movies with.. "song".
You owe me Cohens. 17 minutes of life.
Dave Attell: Road Work (2014)
There is a very good reason you have never heard of this guy..
I don't really do reviews, but if I can save some poor unsuspecting person who loves comedy from experiencing this trash..
Calling this guy a comedian is really an insult to the craft. Absolutely nothing is funny about him other than his appearance. His subject matter is something only 14 year old boys MIGHT laugh at. It is just a series of poorly constructed and tediously delivered genitalia jokes.
Look, I have absolutely no problem with profanity or jokes about sex etc. One of my favorite comedians of all time is Louis C. K. and he is pleasingly filthy. But a good comic doesn't depend solely on profanity and easy targets like little people (why yes they are quite small). Wow.
The only reason I give this guy and his show 2 stars is because I think it was a good idea to have people in the audience use cameras to record his "special" (wow is it not special in any way). Save what will seem like a lost ten hours of your life and pass on this junk. Download some old George Carlin or something.
