The Doll (2016)
Annabelle meets The Grudge: A fun and well-made horror.
Centered around haunted dolls but with the added terror of accompanying demons, this film series delivers. I stumbled upon these films on Netflix and really enjoyed the whole series for my Friday fright night. It's shot in a sort of Lifetime movie way so you might not imagine that it will be as creepy as it is. But if you allow yourself to go with it, it will scare the mess out of you. I don't like dolls anyway so that added to the scares for me. I also will never be able to live or be alone in a house with open windows that look outside either. It's sort of "Annabelle" meets "Ju-On".
Nightmare Alley (2021)
The Best Film Of 2021
With incredible performances from Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, a story so nasty it puts the noir in film noir, and the usual amazing direction from Guillermo del Toro, this is hands down the best film of 2021. It is an instant classic and one of the best film noirs of all time. I saw this first then watched the Tyrone Power led original, which is lame and watered down, in comparison.
In this version, Blanchett is the evilest femme fatale of them all because she doesn't do it for love or money. She is just nasty to be nasty.
I have no idea why so much is being made of the dreadful "Power of The Dog" this year when this is sheer cinematic perfection. I was literally begging Cooper as Stan to not make the choices he makes. The whole 2 and a half hours is a study in the total destruction of a man's life. It's an Icarus tale for 2021.
The ending is so terrifying it turns the film into a horror movie. I can't get that scene out of my mind. The best description for what happens to Stan is what my Mama used to say - "Be careful 'cause the devil is always busy"!
The Grudge (2019)
Great horror reboot!
I have no idea why anyone would claim this was "pretty lame." I found this more interesting and scarier than the Sarah Gellar version. The story is great with some fantastic scares and the ending is horrifying. The thought of what happens will stay with you.
Den skyldige (2018)
One Of The Best Films Of 2018
The Guilty is one of the best films of the year. Best described as Rear Window meets The Detective Story, it follows a former cop, who is now an emergency call center operator. There are so many revelations that it would be a crime to spoil it for you. So suffice it to say, GO SEE IT! If you love movies then you simply must see this one!
Mother! (2017)
The Worst Movie Ever Made
If I could give this dreck minus a trillion out of ten, I would. It is self-indulgent, pretentious filth! There was no story and no scares. It is long boring and weird with a baby ripped to shreds and eaten and a heart ripped out of a charred woman's body. It tops the list of my worst movies ever, which is saying a lot since I have seen thousands of them. Do not waste your time and money! Avoid this like a heart attack, it's a cinematic misogynistic hate-crime and an ugly assault on our senses. I wish I could unsee this and wash the memory of this sick, ugly film from my mind.
Step (2017)
Step Is One Of My Fav Docs Of All Time!
Step, directed by Amanda Lipitz and distributed by Fox Searchlight, is one of my favorite documentaries of all time. When I first heard about the film, I was so excited about it because the art of stepping is such an integral part of African-American culture and history. Then when I saw it, it exceeded every expectation! You will instantly fall in love with all of these lovely young black women. The film follows Blessin Giraldo, Cori Grainger and Tayla Solomon through their senior year at Baltimore's Leadership School for Young Women. As they navigate the college admissions race while participating in the school's step team, we are given a glimpse of African-American life devoid of stereotype or negativity.
Step is actually a mashup of two wonderfully uplifting films into one. On the one hand, it is a film about the personal struggles and triumphs that three talented black teen girls and their middle class families face. On the other, it is a movie about a step team trying to win its first championship. I cried, laughed then cheered and cried with joy again! You will, too.
