Apocalypse Now (1979)
One of the Finest Examples of American Cinema - Ever!
I love movies, from Chaplin, Garbo, Bogart, bad 50s Sci-Fi, Plan B, Giant, Hud, sixties counter-culture, Airplane, Ahnold, Dr Evil, everything from outstanding to truly bad, I love movies. That said, I'll continue...
I first saw the original AN in 1980, at 19 years of age, on my first large screen color tv (remember the video disk?!)
AN was the first film I had ever seen wherin I couldn't even leave my seat to pee - I was positively riveted! Now, 23 years later, I have seen Redux (four times this week!) and I must say that AN (and Redux) are STILL the finest ever! The cinematography, the character's experiences, the sets, the action, the horror and insanity, the multiple levels of thought-provoking sounds and images, everything.
This masterpiece works on SO many levels that I wonder how many times I'll have to watch it to really get it all. My last thought... seeing Lance tripping on acid, with the firefight and wild lighting effects makes me wonder how AN would be while tripping... Happy viewing everyone!
One Hell of a Christmas (2002)
Surprisingly Good for a Bad Movie
I rented this movie expecting to hate it and/or to fall asleep during it. I was pleasantly surprised by the actors (altho a couple of the voices were annoying) who I felt did a very good job considering the material they had to work with. Can me wierd, but I found Mike (Thure Lindhardt) strangely sexy despite his bad teeth. Hmmmm, what does that say about ME?
The storyline was, of course, fairly predictable but enjoyable nonetheless.
All in all, I give it a 2.5 on the Leonard Maltin 'Bomb to 4-Star' rating.
Joyride (1997)
Decent Movie, Great Cast
I rented this movie knowing nothing about it except what I read on the box. Believe it or not, I didn't even know who Tobey McGuire was, altho I just saw Spiderman last month (and damn, he's cute!) So, needless to say, I didn't expect much.
I was pleasantly surprised and amused by its portrayal of a boring, redneck small Texas town (like where I presently live) and its hick residents, and the typical bored teenage boys and the trouble they get into, just like I used to (well, not QUITE like I used to!)
Like many other reviewers, I'm very surprised that Christina Naify hasn't appeared in many other films, because I felt that she was the best player in the cast. I also loved Wilson Cruz, as a scared, whiney, (and cute!) Gay boy, and really got off seeing him kick the crap out of a redneck from school. The concept of Adam West playing the part of a pimp was quite entertaining too.
The plot was a bit twisted, with several unexpected turns that kept me guessing what would happen next. Unlike some other reviewers, I'm not bothered by slight inconsistencies and/or loose ends, I mean, come on, I paid a buck (for all three of us to watch it), and we got an hour and a half of decent entertainment!
All-in-all, I give it 2.5 stars on the Leonard Maltin scale. And I'd watch it again if I can catch it on late-night TV.
