Evil (2019)
Pretty decent for the most part
The show has an interesting premise and the main cast is endearing. The writers could spare us with the infusing of their politics; some of the writing comes off as the fevered nonsense found in a buzzfeed article.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
A drama with a scifi backdrop
The show revolves for the most part around a family in this strange Eureka-esque town and generally followed a different family member in each episode. I really enjoyed the exploration of each character and the focus on their life and relationships. The writers didn't waste any time on exposition about the strange technology which left you in constant wonder and spared you the inevitable disappointment of an underwhelming explanation. It reminded me a bit of the 90s outer limits in that each episode doesn't necessarily end the way you're expecting.
If you enjoy character driven drama with some quirky scifi plot devices it's certainly worth checking out.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
A pleasant surprise
It was a simple and endearing movie. The dialog was smart and often quite funny. I don't think anyone expected much and I wonder how well it would have done without the updated cgi, but it hit the spot. Jim Carey was the perfect robotnic and in perfect form. I think kids will have a blast watching it and look forward to another entry in the series.
Proximity (2020)
Had its moments
The movie started strong, was well shot, and had some fantastic effects, but could have used with some fat trimmings. There were some odd choices with the evil agency and the motivation of the main antagonist. The story and character development really needed more care.
I thought the imagery of Jesus was really powerful, but it felt out of place, hamfisted and odd that the ETs would need to know his name. Like so they can Google himor something? If you're going to bring religion into it why not play with the idea?
You're the Worst: Pancakes (2019)
Well done
You know a show meant something to you as you happy cry during the final scenes. They did a fantastic job leaving me wondering until the end. They really were the worst, but you had to love them.
October Faction: Presidio (2020)
So stunning
Okay we got a biracial couple, maybe it's not foreshadowing of things to come, just an average family who happen to have a black mom and white dad....Literally the first person they interact with pulls the "we don't like your kind around here" with the mom as if that's something that happens outside the fevered dreams of a leftist revolutionary. Then the second person they talk to, the mother manages to establish her victim status once again. I look forward to the demise of NetFlix and seeing these activist hack writers making my coffee at Starbucks like they should be.
Altered Carbon: Phantom Lady (2020)
Netflix ruins another show
This and the first few episodes feel like they are written from the perspective of someone who breezed over the first season and picked up some nomenclature rather than one of indepth knowledge. The story, dialog and depiction of the world feel shallow and low quality. The depiction of Tekashi is so off the mark they may as well have created new characters. Tekashi performing as a female singer in a bar was beyond ridiculous. Just awful.
