Burn (2019)
Fake news? Now we have fake plot?
Not being of the pyro persuasion it was hard to wrap my head around this one , although I did get some heart burn. While 2 tums did away with the heart burn it will take a lot more to erase the searing memory of this film. I guess I'll go back to my lab and look for my misplaced phlogiston.
Reprisal (2018)
Worst Willis Impersonator Movie Ever
Sad to write this as I watch Willis for the distraction. This movie made no sense. First it is July and it is a school day?? Then the city (Cincinnati) is deliberately not mentioned in the movie. Then the action violence suspends credulity. As a Willis fan I had to see the movie but if you are looking for Willis he is hard to find. The movie is a poor excuse.
Fishbowl California (2018)
Acting may have saved this movie
This is little doubt that the actors in this movie put on an excellent performance despite the poor and contrived plot line. There was a story here about life and death, being down and out, and purpose but it was so contrived, stereotypical and unnecessarily unbelievable that the message was lost. Rodney was in foster care...really? Is that what led to his homelessness? Give me a break.
Shot (2017)
Good portrayal of shooting victim, but....
We are taken through parallel scenarios depicting life after a random bullet finds its victim. The acting is well done but the storyline, starting with good intentions ends up being more Hollywood than LA. All in all it makes an important point about all those involved in a pointless shooting even though the final scene is totally ridiculous. (Why does it take forever for the wife to get out the bedroom?)
A Thousand Junkies (2017)
Best Film to End Drug Prohibition
Amazing story about the futility of the drug war. While not as graphic as it could be this film clearly demonstrates how the criminalization of a medical issue impacts us all. While it does have some funny bits the message is clear...end this drug war now.
Reclaim (2014)
Film touted to expose child trafficking in the world gets it wrong.
All right, Cusack and Guzman are pretty good but the whole movie is as probable as the New York Giants winning the Super Bowl. All the bad get killed, all the good guys survive (even Guzman who looked like he died gives us an alive wink to show he survived a massive bullet to his head. The saddest part of the movie is the end message which states that 1.2 million children are trafficked throughout the world each year and they are invisible. Sad but true but it had nothing to do with this movie. Nina was only posing as a trafficked child. Her adoptive mom just happened to be a scam artist. All in all skip the movie and if you are interested in the problem of human trafficking there are plenty of other places to find real stories.
Seven Pounds (2008)
Movie Glorifies Suicide
This is a perverted Bucket List without the solid acting. While many seem to have enjoyed this movie to me it glorified a bizarre religious notion that one can be absolved from sin by performing good deeds. What is most disturbing is that it glorifies suicide as an ultimate unselfish gift rather than treating it as mental illness. His long time friend obviously knows his guilt and mental state yet, on behalf of his "friendship" does nothing but encourage him further into his psychotic plan.
The movie sends the wrong message. It uses a love story to disguise deep emotional guilt. To add insult to injury after he kills his wife in a car accident due to his negligence he has sex with the woman he gives his heart to. How off the wall is that?
