Penny Princess (1952)
A lovely old film, with great characters and a chance to escape.........
Okay, this isn't Gone With The Wind or Citizen Kane. This is a lovely fluffy old film that has some charming characters and lovely scenes. Giving some of the theme away here, by the time you get to the part where Yolande Donlan's character has settled into her role as temporary ruler of Lampidorra, you've already been shown some fun scenes as Dirk's character interacts with an English store after his return from military duty, and you get to enjoy Lindy (Yolande) attempt to sell a potato peeler and interact with estate lawyers, actors Alexander Gauge and Macdonald Parke. This is just a really cute film with great character actors supporting it. It's fun! And I love fun old movies. To me they're a great escape. If that's your thing, you'll find this movie worth your time. Dirk manages to portray an attentive love interest and Yolande is an old fashioned, beautiful and caring person here, who ultimately helps these quirky (and not so legal) residents out of a jam. Enjoy!
American Sniper (2014)
A waste. VERY anti-American.
SUCKED. SUCKED. SUCKED. What a horrible film. I hated "American Sniper". It was full of subtle and not so subtle anti-American jabs. I didn't know Chris Kyle. But if he was pro-American I think he would say the movie SUCKED. SPOILER: Basically you see a "cowboy" meet a girl. He was raised to protect his little brother. He gets trained as a seal.... that part was probably realistic. During the war he kills a child and you see the enemy kill a child because he's there. He's supposedly there to protect his buddies... and in real life I'm guessing that was very likely true. But they have subtle hints to make you question things. He gets screwed up... becomes kind of like a robot soldier personality and is distanced from his wife and children. His little brother basically says screw the war and looks very mentally screwed up. His close friend dies and at his funeral his mother reads a letter his friend wrote questioning being in the war. His other friend has a bad head injury and says basically screw hooyah... then dies in surgery. The guy finally makes it back to his wife and kids after four tours and is messed up but being out of the war and no longer protecting his buddies or our country and no longer killing little kids and fighting Iraq .... he manages to heal. Now he's "back" for his wife and kids. But some screwed up soldier kills him. So yes, that is true. But the whole movie is very anti-American. I am GOOD at detecting subtle crap and this was so full of subtle anti-American crap. Shame on Clint Eastwood and let's all send anti- American leaders some popcorn cause I'm sure they love this movie. Ugh. While our country is not perfect, don't put out a supposedly pro-American film and then trash our nation.
Regarding cinematography and pacing it's fair. Honestly it's not that good in that department either. The acting is good to excellent.
Clancy (2009)
Diamonds in the dust......
To me, a film is good if it accomplishes one or more of my list of desires as I watch a movie: entertainment, escape, teaching, beauty, display of great skill whether it's an actor, costumer, music score or whatever.
This movie, despite a lower budget than some, hits a home run with talent and teaching, and in the long run, beauty.
My suggestion would be to watch it and relax... enjoy the ride. Don't put expectations on it because.... it simply has something to teach you. But don't look for it... just let it roll into your heart.
I LOVED the relationship that develops between two unlikely characters. Really nice natural acting and the truth is there are valuable relationships all over the place between "unlikely" people. There are a lot of other important truths displayed in this wonderful film as well.
I highly recommend this film. Don't expect a classic or a lush budgeted movie. But if you appreciate deep truth I believe you'll like it a lot.
Appropriate for teens and above but for younger kids I'd view it first then decide. Not for little ones due to some necessary violence and intense issues. This film is worth seeking out.
