Good Omens (2019)
Season two just not as good
I absolutely loved the first season. Unfortunately the second season was kind of off. I'm not really sure what it was exactly, but it just seemed to not have nearly as much of the clever humor and it seemed a bit slow. I ding the series two stars for that. I did love the final episode. I had no idea what was going on with Gabriel until the end and him getting kicked out of heaven for just being "Nah" to Armageddon was hilarious.
Also I just re-watched the first season, and it's kind of hilarious how the gay thing apparently blind sided so many people, come on. It was so obvious, and there's nothing wrong with it.
Hunters (2020)
Holocaust Denier Fuel
I watched the first episode with my boyfriend and noticed a glaring problem that immediately turned me off the show completely. The ridiculous portrayal of made up 'Holocaust atrocities.' If you know anything about Holocaust deniers (I recommend looking at their arguments because it's a very educational insight into their twisted logic), you know that fake or exaggerated Holocaust stories are one of their main talking points.
I did about two minutes of research on this issue with the she and found that the Auschwitz Museum had already released a statement outlining this and other problems with the show.
I'm very disappointed to see that Amazon decided to go ahead with a second season of this trash.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Too Stretched Out
I know the actual story, the portrayal is relatively accurate but I think they spent way too much time on fictionalized drama, it was just too long. It was also off-putting how all the characters portrayed as protagonists sympathized with Anna even though they knew she was all lies, nastiness, and theft.
Cry Macho (2021)
Good story, bad casting
I think my main issue with this movie is casting. Particularly, the actor who plays Rafo did a very poor job overall and made the whole movie slightly painful to watch.
Clint Eastwood can still deliver lines well, but you can see his age. His hands shake and he looks like he's about to fall over most of the time. Any scenes involving him fighting or breaking horses seem ridiculous because of this, as well as him being sent on any sort of mission in the first place.
My favorite part was his relationship with the barkeeper and her grandchildren. It still seems a little weird for any women under to be immediately into this man that literally looks like he's going to fall over dead at any minute, but hey, love can defy age.
Robin's Wish (2020)
Raising awareness on a little known and devastating disease
This documentary does a good job laying out what Lewy Body Dementia is and what it does to people. It's depressing and a little hopeless, because sadly right now that's how the disease is. There is no effective treatment and very little hope that things will get better any time soon. I think it is important for people to learn about this disease, how many people it affects, and how hard it is to diagnose.
I just learned this month that Robin Williams passed away from this disease, and this greatly upset me for the simple fact that this has been out for about seven years and I didn't know until now. The lack of awareness around this disease and that this is what killed Robin saddens and scares me, because my dad died from it, and if Robin dying from it didn't bring attention to the disease, what will? I am glad that the LBD Foundation and Robin's wife are making some progress in awareness and research, but I wish I had more hope that science will find a cure.
I would sum the disease up in three words: Scary, confusing, devastating.
My dad passed away from Lewy Body Dementia in 2009. He was 67. He suffered GREATLY from 2016-2019, when the disease was kind of jump started by a heart surgery he had in 2016. He had all of the same symptoms as Robin, but he was not able to function as well as Robin. He never went back to work, and the main word that sums up his state until his death is: fear.
For us it was fear, sadness, and confusion. We didn't understand why he was so afraid, why parts of his body would seem to shut down, why he had constant anxiety, panic, and doubt, why he would say weird things, why he kept going downhill and none of the dozens of medication or therapies they tried helped.
We didn't have a diagnosis until the late stages. The worst thing about not having a diagnosis for me was our doubt over whether his behavior was due to an illness or if he was making stuff up. He was having hallucinations delusions, and we didn't know this was going on or how to deal with them.
I want to be less scared of this disease.
A Hidden Life (2019)
Long, so long
This movie might have been okay if it was about half as long. The story is good, but there also really isn't all that much to it and I don't understand why it took three hours to tell it. It's just a lot of beautiful shots of scenary, happy times on a farm, hard times on a farm, prisoners milling around in prison, more scenary, more farm struggles, more scenary, more milling around in prison. It just gets so boring. Honestly this could easily be cut to an hour long.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Music is ridiculously out of place
I asked my friends if they had suggestions for musicals similar to Moulin Rouge or Phantom of the Opera, one suggested this, this is not that.
The songs are all this airy, 2010's pop and the voices and music are just so bizarrely out of place from the rest of the movie. Usually musicals have songs that blend into the rest of the movie. This is like you're watching a period piece and then it randomly changes channels to a Grammy's performance for a few minutes.
365 dni (2020)
Why is this even on Netflix?
My boyfriend and I were rooting the whole time that Laura was going to strangle or shoot the dude or something, because then that would have redeemed the movie a little. Spoiler alert: Doesn't happen. She basically gets Stockholm Syndrome over a man who kidnaps her and assaults her repeatedly. Just, what?
Blade Runner (1982)
Disappointing
I think I went into this movie expecting too much. It was really slow and painfully dated.
The Lion King (2019)
Loved It
So I think I'm the target audience for this movie: I've loved the animation since I was 5, it has one of my favorite soundtracks ever, and I love spin offs including the Broadway show and Disney World's show. They would have really had to screw up for me to not like this.
I had one issue with this movie: Can You Feel The Love Tonight had too much daylight. I hope they pull a George Lucas and fix this for the Bluray releae.
What I loved: The animation was absolutely INCREDIBLE. The realism of the animals and environment, the little touches, just everything was mind-blowing. The lion cubs looked so cute and soft that I just wanted to pet them. The parts that were playful and fun in the original were also playful and fun in this movie without being cartoon-y. The voices were similar to the original, with the notable exception of Scar and Shenzi, but I still enjoyed those performances. Timon, Pumba, and Zazu were great and just as amusing as in the original. Most of the jokes have been updated, which keeps the movie entertaining and gives some new-ness. The music was great. I especially liked the opening song, I Just Can't Wait to Be King, Hakuna Matata, and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Can You Feel The Love Tonight seemed a little weak, but I feel like the theater I went to also didn't have the volume up high enough.
Overall, this is not movie made for critics. but for fans and kids, and I think it's great.
Tomorrowland (2015)
Good Fun Movie
Honestly based on the trailer I was expecting this to be a lame action film set in the future. My husband really wanted to see it though, and I'm glad I did because I enjoyed it.
The trailer is pretty vague, and there's actually a lot going on to make the movie more interesting. I liked the opening flashback, the way the It's a Small World ride opened up to a portal to Tomorrowland, the way the pin was actually only a type of type of 'promo film' and didn't teleport you anywhere, the robot girl, the 'bad guy.' I liked the father and brother in the film. The trailer kind of makes the dad seem like a jerk but he's actually a cool engineer dude. Overall, it was a fun and enjoyable movie.
I don't know why the critics are so concerned with "mis-casting" and the plot. I thought the casting was fine and the plot made complete sense if you weren't caught up in being a butt-hurt critic.
