Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Worst movie of 2009? I think yes.
I can not for the life of me wonder why the first Transformer's movie was so well received by the public. The Special FX were overdone (of course overdone special FX is Bay's trademark) 99 percent of the jokes were not funny. The storyline was uninteresting, which to be fair is more due to the source material giving little to work with than the movie's own fault.
I wasn't really interested in seeing a sequel in the first place but ended up seeing it anyways at the Drive-in along with Harry Potter and damn everything that was wrong with the first one is multiplied by 100. The special effects are so overused and so over the top that I was almost convinced Bay was making fun of himself. An apple falls in slow motion for Christ Sake! I don't think there was a single scene in the movie that didn't implement computer rendered effects. Not a single joke was funny. The mom getting high was so stupid and overdone. The dog's humping was pointless and stupid. The movie was too long for an incoherent mess of a plot.
In short this movie makes the first one look like Citizen Kane by comparison.
Joshua (2007)
Most intelligent horror movie I have seen in a long time.
This film is just...wow. After all this unintelligent no thought T and A torture porn horror movies we've been getting (Almost all of which had been remakes of films from the seventies and the eighties) it's nice to see a horror film with some substance and thought put in it. This movie really makes you think. Was the boy truly evil? Was his sociopath behavior a result of the neglect from his parents? Without giving anything away the ending will seriously disturb you. Although this movie may sound something like a cross between The Omen and The Good Son trust me it's not. This movie is very original. Not only is "Joshua" the best horror movie in the last decade it's one of the best horror movies of all time.
Batman Returns (1992)
A daring Super Hero film that does something different
Batman Returns is an odd beast, as it is not really a Batman film nor is it a super hero film. It's very much a quirky art film disguised as a super hero film. Despite the title, this movie is really about the Penguin, his rejection at birth for being deformed, his ascension in the public eye, and rise to power and his fall and eventual rejection of humanity. Batman merely serves as a spectator of the events in this movie having little to do except have sexual tension with the other villain Catwoman. (Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfiefer have the best chemistry of any Batman movie by the way). Speaking of Catwoman by the way, while The Penguin may be the film's main character , it Michelle Pfeifer's performance as Selina Kyle A.K.A Catwoman that really makes this movie worth watching. Miss Pfiefer does a great job playing the mousy secretary pushed to madness. In fact the two most powerful scenes in this movie are owned by Michelle Pfiefer. The scene where Selina Kyle has her psychotic breakdown and wrecks her apartment and the scene where Batman offers her a fairy tale ending of happiness which she rejects for revenge against the man who wronged her. This film is perhaps the most pessimistic comic book film of all time. Every character in this movie loses. Penguin loses his acceptance in to society, Catwoman loses her fairy tale ending, and Batman loses any chance of a normal life. When watching the end of this movie one has to wonder if Bruce Wayne isn't contemplating hanging up the cape and cowl for good. You might be wondering why I gave this film a 5 out of 10 even though I've been gushing over it so much, the simple fact is despite it's title Batman Returns is hardly a Batman film, this film belongs to it's villains and why one of the rules is a super hero is only as good as his villains that doesn't mean the movie should almost all but ignore it's hero. That said I am recommending this film because it is in my opinion the most daring comic book film.
Batman (1989)
A triumph of style over substance
The original modern day Batman movie succeeds in pulling it's audience in with it's amazing visuals but fails to have any real substance. That is not to say there isn't nothing to like about this movie other than on a superficial level. Jack Nicholson as the Joker steals the show portraying the clown prince of crime as a homicidal maniac with a demented sense of humor just as he should be. Michael Keaton effectively plays a Bruce Wayne trying to deal with duel identities as well as the dark avenger Batman. Unfortunately the characters in this movie go nowhere as far as development is concern and it's hard to care about anyone in this movie. But it is the visuals in this movie that work setting Gotham in a timeless almost 1940's retro style that had in influence on the superior animated series. The music by Danny Elfman is incredible being perhaps the best score in any super hero film to date and in my personal top 5 movie scores of all time. It may seem that I don't think much of this movie, but I do. I considerate it to be best Batman of the original franchise.
Halloween (2007)
Piece of **** sums it up nicely.
I'm amazed that anybody would fine this movie brilliant or good, when it's quite the opposite. The suppose point of this remake was to humanize Michael Myers which is fine I suppose since it is a remake but it's not even done well. We don't see any transition from a normal boy to a monster what the original did in 2 minutes the remake took forty minutes. Right when the movie starts the kid is already demented. Are we offered a reason why he becomes that way? His red neck step dads verbally abuses him ooh that's a perfectly good reason or not. His mom's a stripper! Oh and she also cares deeply about him and defends him. But his older sister makes fun of him! Although that's nothing to whine about. He's also bullied by like one kid. In the movies if your not being bullied by a gang of bullies you shouldn't even care. Don't let fans of this movie fool you it doesn't humanize Michael Myers in any shape or form. It just stretched out the origin of the original and gave the kid a trailer trash life style, a love for rock music (like Zombie) and long hair.
And speaking of long hair why did every guy in this movie need a haircut?
