Poltergeist (1982)
Forever the best in all of time and existence
Best Haunted House/Ghost/Horror ever. Nothing will ever replace this in all of existence and time. They can remake it as they already have; but this version, this movie, these actors, are forever. This is thee movie that set in stone everything that ever tried / tries to copy it after. It should have stopped here. Poltergeist II is a cult classic but was never on par with the first and then III was just a shallow attempt at making money off the series rather than write and direct a worthy movie at all. RIP H. O'Rourke, Dominique Dunne, Zelda Rubenstein, et al.
What makes this so great too, is that it's the old times like when special effects were first taking off into the realm of totally weird and cool and what you saw on screen was most often always real; not cgi minus the use of various lighting and electrical spurts here and there. But seriously, the house getting eatin' into nothingness at the end, the soundtrack itself composed by Jerry Goldsmith and that final track at the ending when they're all in the car, he backs out, Dana arrives home, she's screaming, the entire house is electrified and things are blowing up, Dana gets in the car, Steven peels out, takes off, fire hydrants exploding fire and water, people all walking out to witness wtf is going on and it is just the most epic ending ever.
Nothing can ever surpass THIS version.
P. S. Just wanted to mention if you look up Poltergeist house on Google Maps and go into street view, you can view it there today.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
Only lame thing is the music.
The story is good. It's your typical mystery/psychological twist with a huge, explosive ending. But wow the thing I could not stand every time it got intense or even when things weren't intense was the selection of music used for this show. I couldn't tell if it was a clarinet or some kind of flute, but it kept wobbling up and down often in the background and it was during Intense moments that would have been much more ominous had they just not had any music at all. It's too bad really because it's a good show with the music sometimes really just ruined the moment. I really hope in the future we have the option to disable the soundtrack to movies and/or shows because I am so OCD about the type of music used, especially in mystery thriller suspense type stories. It was way over kill in most of the entire show.
Humans (2015)
3 is not enough
I'll never understand how the ratings decide. The actual story, the development and how it evolves are enough to convince anyone this story is worth continuing. Even after 5 years as of this writing I believe it can still be revived. Society needs more escapes like this to allow us mental r and r. But sure let's focus more on reality shows and dumb news that only ever talks about negative things never inspiring people to do good but to only ever feel pain and despair and anger. Think about it. Society needs to stop reflecting on itself and instead start focusing on what it can be to do better. To inspire. To encourage. An article about another shooting or war or a country who gave up on peace to kill its own citizens does none of that.
The Killing (2011)
1-900-ITS-DOPE
Trust me. I wouldn't be here otherwise.
So, so very good. Second time watching (March 2023) since it came out.
Excellent character development throughout every episode. Plot twists that twist the previous plot with a future plot that no one even knew about. Not even now as you read this. Often I personally find that audiences are usually dumbed down to witness the comings and goings of the usual police approach to solving a case without really bearing witness to everything affected by that case other than the overtime and exhaustion of the police force themselves.
But what about everyone else?
That's what we get here. We live for a while with each of the characters wherever they are; at home, in the car, at the store, in bed, crying, laughing. They do a damn fine job of it too, to the point where you miss them when their story is over. Even for the bad guys there's a tiny nuance of sympathy at the same time you're angry when finally finding out.
Pay attention. There are no episode recaps at the beginning of each episode.
Men (2022)
It's about the madness and pain one suffers in their mind...
In my opinion, the story greatly and genuinely exceeds that of how even I could try to conceptualize the frustration and anger that develops from a relationship gone wrong. How does one simply present to another person in words how angry and sad and confused they are?
This movie visually, in my opinion, represent such a feat without any reservations whatsoever. Yes, it is grossly over exaggerated on a grotesque level however, the story is still there.
Sans all the reviews that say there isn't anything really there, or deep, or ruined, it's an excellent portrayal of pain.
This movie is about pain and healing. The madness one experiences as such fresh out of a tragic and clearly unhealthy relationship. Though, I will give pause we only have one side of the story as presented here, nonetheless, this is about the pain and suffering of the protagonist so naturally we are going to be on their side to begin with.
Look past the grotesque and the visual awe; witness transformation that results from this mild, eerie and ethereal journey of madness and painto healing.
Firestarter (2022)
84 will always be the best but this is good too!
But what about this music? If anyone is going to compare anything let's compare the music. Tangerine Dream is by far the best soundtrack especially the end finale in 84.
But as a stand alone story if I never knew of the 84 version or the book this presentation was okay. Even the 1984 version at the time was received mediocre. It's only because it became such a cult classic everyone is holding this movie up to some kind of universal standard that all remakes are always terrible.
Not true. But I personally have my sore spots and strong spots.
The little actress was amazing. I loved her anger face. Very convincing. She played it well.
The lack of focus on the company was a sore spot. Left little to be desired as to why we hate the company when there's isn't any backstory and no there doesn't have to be a sequel prequel to do it. They did a good job in 84 all in one movie.
I love the idea overall of seeing a new take and approach. This was fun. Just a bit too sappy and would have enjoyed more displays of power and perhaps explosions like we all saw in 84 at the end.
84s ending was awesome. Probably the best next to Poltergeist and Raiders. It was always about the grand finale endings. The slow progressive music build up, her anger, the horses being freed, the guy running off in the golf cart who gets lit. The bullet stopping in mid air and exploding.
This movie really failed that aspect. We never really see the company building it's just on a beach somewhere where everything explodes off screen and bits of fire and crackling sounds follow. Yep that was a disappointment.
It was really like there was no hot trigger moment that separated the middle part to the grand finale either. It just blended. Anyway.
I felt there could have been more displays of power with fire which is what the story is about and not moving objects with her mind and utilizing the push. Boring. It has always been about the fire.
Oh well. Overall I liked it. I would not want to own it is all. Just watch it for fun.
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
Surprised it wasn't a series.
The story was so spot on and never faded. Well enough I could see this being a series with each new season being the next 9 years.
OtherLife (2017)
Impressive
I loved this. It was entirely new. No well known actors. At least not that I knew right off. The acting was good. The story was good and quick to reel you in and an excellent ending. Worth watching every minute. The cinematography was well done too. No quick angles, no sudden movements or jittery camera movement. And not one of those amateur films that clip scenes and jump around.
Travelers (2016)
Superb
I just finished this on Netflix. I love this show. The performance and storytelling is amazing. It's done so well in that, it's like a play. It's left to our imagination based on the things they're saying throughout each episode to envision what this is actually about. There are no special effects whatsoever.
We've become so babied to needing visual confirmation to understand everything that's happening in shows and movies that little is left to our imagination. This show reignites that within me anyway and I love it.
I highly recommend it. Slow first couple of episodes but it progressively improves to an eerily suspenseful climactic cliffhanger at the end.
Definitely a season 2 is justified.
