The Unborn (2009)
Well done, has plenty of scares, and a decent script
Most horror films don't win major awards, but this one is praise worthy of many good moments. The Unborn delivers both scares and a well done story that keeps you into the movie. The music was well done and fit perfectly into the movie, the visuals were creepy and often dark. The film has an excellent flow that makes the story understandable and keeps the movie entertaining. Now this film was not without some flaws. There were occasions where, the film was more... comedic than scary, and had me and the people around me laughing joyfully, rather than huddling together and screaming. But the flow of the film and the moments that did scare me outdid the comedic scenes, and in some ways the comedic scenes made the movie that much more entertaining. Overall is was very good and I enjoyed seeing it, though I'll probably rent it if I want to see it again.
Twilight (2008)
Big Anticipation, Big Disappointment...
The movie we have been anticipating all year has finally come out! Sadly... it felt rushed and left the viewer sort of unfulfilled. Granted, compared to Eragon in its book vs movie comparison, Twilight did bring much of the book onto the big screen. The actors were... Dull, boring, and monotonous. Stewert, while being in some good movies, just does not get the emotions out. Robert did an excellent job of Edward, but the movie, like the book, focused WAY too much on him. Most of the movie focuses on the two main characters, while this is expected, the others are sort of "not as involved". Some of the characters were very dull and you learn so little about anything. Had I not read the book first, I would have been VERY confused with this movie. In some areas, the characters have awkward moments(in fact too many) that left me seeing this movie as a corny and bad impression of some of Twilight's more dramatic moments. All in all, this movie was one of the biggest letdowns, that will only draw in profit from the inflated hype blimp created by the fans. If your a die hard fan, you will be disappointed, otherwise I recommend reading the book, before seeing the movie, otherwise you just won't get half of what is going on.
The Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008)
Save your money and see something else
So after seeing this I realize I wasted my money seeing this trash. The film begins with a girl playing a follow the notes type of game with her boyfriend, until her dad interrupts and they have their daughter-father argument. Then the father breaks down, goes crazy, and kills his daughter. The story then jumps to Molly, who's had problems coping with the stress of her mother's insanity. Though locked up in the asylum, she sees her mother chanting things such as "I've got to save you" "this is for your own good" It's all fun and entertaining at first, but the movie seems to just loop in a circle. This movie is a big disappointment, as I had some expectations from it.
Quarantine (2008)
Good, but could have been better
Overall the film did something a horror movie hasn't done in a long time, it scared the crap out of me. The film's strongest points are that it has very gruesome death sequences and give a feel of terror. For the sake of a good ending though, the deaths seemed to get staler and staler... At one point in the movie, about half the cast dies within 5 minutes of a single scene, topped with some of the characters seemingly vanishing. It was also hard to keep up with who was who at times, at the end of the movie, the "badass" or "hero" gets randomly killed as a zombie just leaps at him and chews his throat out, then the camera man was either beaten or stabbed to death by the Gandhi zombie(the zombie looked like Gandhi.) Then of course the last survivor being the obnoxious news lady, gets pulled into the darkness by an unknown entity. The back story was also very bleak and left you guessing at the end as to what was really going on. But it all falls with a stereotypical plot line, that the government is conspiring with some super biological weapon or they discover some rare strain of a disease(in this case rabies, Kujo much?) The camera angles were also very similar to Cloverfield, in that the entire movie is told from a camera that has seemingly and endless life and is hard to keep on what is going on visually. It was probably done for realism, but still... It's a movie. To top it off, I stayed for the ending credits and almost as if to humor the audience is discloses the film as fictional. (i would certainly hope it was fictional...)
