Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
Episode Will Definitely Divide Opinion
Whether or not you will enjoy this episode will largely depend on your feelings towards musicals.
The plot of this episode is far fetched but no more so than some of the other plots in the series, so if you've got as far as this episode the reason that the crew suddenly start singing shouldn't be too much of a stretch.
The songs themselves are pretty catchy and some of the cast have clearly had musical training and deliver excellent performances. Even those less accomplished singers do an adequate job.
As someone who enjoys musicals both onscreen and live in theatres, this episode definitely gets a positive rating from me.
Oppenheimer (2023)
A Masterpiece
I should start by saying that whilst I've seen and enjoyed much of Nolan's work, I've long been waiting for the film of his that I truly loved. Oppenheimer is that film.
Cillian Murphy is amazing in the lead role and is excellently supported by a star studded cast. A special mention to Robert Downey Jr who is almost unrecognisable in the role of Lewis Strauss.
The timeline jumps about but the film is so engrossing that it's not difficult to follow the story, and although almost 3 hours long, it doesn't feel like it drags at any point.
I saw it on the big screen - which I'd recommend - but can't wait for a second viewing once available on streaming platforms.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Gone Downhill Since S1
Really enjoyed Season 1, good pacing, original storyline & quirky but interesting characters. Second season wasn't up to the standard of the first but still enjoyable.
Season 3 was poor. Introduced several new uninspiring characters. The story was weak and the transition from Vanya to Victor seemed shoehorned in to the show to either drag things out or appease Page. Won't be watching S4 if it gets the go ahead.
Cats (2019)
Truly Awful
As somebody who enjoys musicals and has a cinema unlimited card I thought I'd ignore the reviews and give it a chance. Big mistake, huge.
There is no plot, the songs were instantly forgettable with distinctly average performances and the whole thing was just weird.
We lasted 35 minutes before walking out - the first walkout I've had since 1986!
Departure (2019)
Truly Awful
Gave up on this in episode 3 and annoyed I gave it so long. Acting, plot, script are shockingly bad.
Given it's a fictional drama you expect some artistic license, but this is so far removed from reality that it's laughable. Had anyone involved in the making of this trash watched even a single episode of Air Crash Investigates they might have made something watchable.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Absolute Garbage
The Dead Don't Die, but viewers might of boredom.
Looked promising with a decent cast but soooo slow and the movie never really gets going.
