Zielona granica (2023)
Don't mind bad user reviews - essential movie!
Quick note on the low rating - this movie was targeted by Polish government as anti-patriotic, hense sole people saw it fit to try and bomb the reviews. The movie itself is absolutely gut wrenching to watch, but is absolutely a must watch. The movie raises important questions about the migrant crisis in Europe and the double standards we hold against people of different religions, different languages and races. I honestly lost myself during the movie and watched it as a documentary - the acting, camera work are absolutely fantastic, while the drama unfolding in front of you is sadly still happening on a daily basis across many borders globally. Watch it!
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Bad script and lazy acting
They tried to wash this movie with FX and, to some degree the costumes, but it ended just as you would expect. What are the key issues: #1. The script is super shallow, some weird copy of samurai movie where they are hired to defend the village and Riddick chronicles with a dash of Star Wars. #2. The lines actors are lazily reading on screen are as basic as it gets - the moment you think the movie ain't that bad actually, just wait for them to start speaking. #3. Wardrobe and makeup - OMG, who hired those people?! Space nazis, space vikings and space barbarians? Are you absolutely without any creativity in that department? Anyhow, I just hope that such movies don't hurt the overall sci Fi movies industry - people just don't buy the bad stuff.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Meh
Sad lingering on the past, poor acting and script, poor and heavily overused FX. Neither good action, nor funny. Who's the supposed audience of this? People who loves the original in the 80's? IDK, turned out to be some tacky time waster, something in between of Transformers and Mr. Bean.
Damn, this review is too short. Oh well.
Extra characters required to post this, just like the extra FX and action scenes they added for the movie for no reason. The Thin Red Line (1998)
Ages very well, perhaps getting better with time
Could it be that it's the best, most thoughtful movie on the war, conflict, nature of people and our place in the world that we've seen so far? Just rewarched the movie for the first time since it debuted back in 1998 and I'm struck by how well it aged - script, acting, lines, camera work, sound, editing - all at it's best and don't feel dated at all. It's not an FX movie, and it's one of those rare movies that makes you realize that there was a certain point where filmmaking reached a point where things on top are just things on top. The narrative, acting of a superb lineup of young stars and superb camera work are what really drives this movie. If you compare it to "Nothing new on the western front", a movie that got so much love in 2023, I'd say that it pales in comparison to "Thin Red Line" in terms of the depth, the feeling you're left with. I look forward to rewatching it again in a decade or so and I somehow have no doubt that like a good wine it will continue to age well, impress with the depth and.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Excellent script, yet not suitable for TikTok generation with short attention span
Excellent movie, truly - a smart, stylish dystopian Sci Fi that is getting lots of negativity for no other reason than being a slow burner with a good plot. I guess anything that's not in-your-face action driven drama with a positive ending or Mandalorian style muppet show these days has hard time. Anyway, I'm sure this movie will find it's audience among people who were fond of Memento and similar movies. This movie has it all, from my perspective - excellent script, fantastic performances by the main cast, strong camera work and music. I'm giving this an easy 8.5/10, which is truly rare these days when good TV series has put long form movies in a tight spot.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
The 70's are calling
The "real Star Trek fans" must be in ecstasy - this is truly back to the 70's farce. And yes, it's as bad as it sounds or it feels when you are rewatching 50 year old movies or TV series - dumb, over the top, bad script and bad acting material. This just makes me sad, once again, about the Discovery and all the compromises it had to make to appease this demographics.
House of Gucci (2021)
Borat meets fashion
I was hoping the movie will pick up, but it just kept going down the hill until it was over. What a letdown, especially with so many talented actors. Why do they all talk like Borat? Is this supposed to be an Italian accent? Or is the script so bad that no accent would save it? I have no idea, to be honest, but it felt like I'm watching SNL or some cable parody of a movie. Will make sure to avoid further movies of this director.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Low budget ridiculous 80's parody
I'm sorry to all the fans of Star Wars, while I enjoyed some movies, I'm not a hard die fan, constantly in search of some long lost feeling of youth back in the 70's. I love good Sci Fi though, I prefer Sci Fi in fact, but I find this style gimmicky and sad. Mandalorian was bad and Boba Fet is even worse. You truly need to be a super devoted fan to like this cheap muppet show or disregard it in favor of references to the "TUE Star Wars" style of the 70's. Camera is bad, effects are bad, music is bad, acting is bad and worst of all are the costumes. No, wait, worst is the overall product, which is impossible to enjoy. Market-product fit, I guess, so best greetings to all who love this, I get it, though I'm actually glad I'm not among those ;)
The Silent Sea (2021)
Skip it
Not sure about this trend of Korean movies and series, perhaps Netflix could chill with it a bit.
Passable camera work and sound, but script, dialogues and acting are pretty terrible. Boring as hell, should have made it a 3 part series at most. Watched it only due to Sci Fi setting, but still regret the time wasted on it...
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Script and acting are terrible
Better than Game of Thrones? Hah, that's some wishful thinking! Maybe there's good source material, haven't read the books, but the series look like an aged Xena the Warrior Princess soap opera. Dropped after a few series, very unlikely to pick it up after such a start.
The Harder They Fall (2021)
Hard fall
Initially put 5/10, but upon completion of the movie moved it down to 4. Good camera work, nice lineup of actors, but the script, man, nothing makes any sense. Twists and turns for the sake of having them, defying any logic and storytelling structure. I have no idea what happened, why, what was the motivation of characters, whey they did what they did. Meh, waste of time to even write this. Skip this movie.
Star Trek: Prodigy (2021)
For very young audiences
Animation for your kids, maybe, not something a Star Trek fan should watch expecting a high quality animation experience within the lore. Wish this would be more like Star Wars Clone Wars, but perhaps it's fine if they intended for 5-12 year olds.
The Billion Dollar Code (2021)
Interesting story, terrible script and acting
While based on true story, lots of stuff is hard to verify and you can spot moments of creative writing. But the experience is ultimately ruined by terrible acting and even poorer script and dialogues.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Meh
Starts promissing, religious horror and tension... And then finishes so random and so flat, that you regret immensly spending so much time. All that hope that there's an actually smart script unraveling towards the end gets blown to peaces. Imagine last episode of Lost and dial it to 12.
Don't waste your time, truly a lame experience.
Outside the Wire (2021)
Looks like a Chinese movie
Decent effects, but writing and acting is soooo terrible that all I was thinking was weather it was directed, edited and funded my Chinese. Could have been an interesting Sci Fi, but ended up as a terrible waste of time.
Orphan Black (2013)
Outdated, lame acting
I'm sure some people like this light script and acting. We dropped it after 3 episodes as it was painful to watch the terrible acting, amateurish accents and cheap camera work. Maybe there's a gem hidden there, but getting to it is too painful given how many excellent series there are these days. Don't waste your time.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Unwatchable
Even with constant (constant!!!) reminder to self that this is based on a comic book, you really can't stop thinking how bad it is. Shallow, lame, cheesy - that's all you can think about. Even the 1984 setting was a miss as aside from a few simple gimmicks (hairdos, old TV's, soviet union, a few puns here and there) it didn't really work. Effects were terrible too, especially the WW flying like a superman. Man, what a mess, must be in my top3 of the worst superhero movies of all times, right there with the Batman and Penguin from the 1980's...
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
Muppet show for old people
How do people rate this a 9.9? Script is terrible, sound is terrible, costumes are from 1970's just as the filming style. You must be 6 or 60 to actually enjoy it - either hasn't seen anything good just yet, or stopped accepting anything new after 1990...
The Mandalorian: Chapter 14: The Tragedy (2020)
Wow!
So, Muppet Show meets Power Rangers. To save some costs, looks like the cafeteria crew was also used for script writing and special effects. If this wouldn't be Star Wars with all the 7 and 75 year old fan base, it would hardly pass the bar for a cable TV morning time slot.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 10: The Passenger (2020)
What?!
How old is the target audience of the Mandalorian according to creators? 6? 5?
This looks like a Muppet show - homemade costumes, terrible script, cheesy lines, CGI work of a student...
What am I missing? Why people seem to like this? Cause it reminds them of the original Star Wars from 1979? In that case it's a win - the quality of production looks exactly as if it's from 1979.
Barbarians (2020)
Cheesy, patriotic historic drama
While I'm normally fascinated with any content on this period, must regretfully say that Barbarians is too difficult to enjoy - plot, dialogues and acting are very amateurish, predictable and LVL3000 cheesy. Maybe it's enjoyable for German audiences, who knows, but I'm sadly dropping the series after episode 1 already...
Save Yourselves! (2020)
Zeitgeist movie on hipster culture
No idea what the bad reviewers are raving about. I think they completely miss the point and humor of this movie. It's an excellent recap of the hipster culture, fascination with fake interests and pursuit of meaning while missing out on the stuff earlier generations were better at. Likewise, their openness to share, discuss and analyse leads to some hilarious dialogue writing and we found ourselves laughing at smartly written stuff often. It's not really a sci-fi though, the whole alien thing is used just as a prop for the script.
Altered Carbon (2018)
Good IP slaughtered in Season 2
Fantastic season 1, one of the best new sci fi shows out there - good acting, script, camera work. Everything clicked! And season 2 looks like the budget was cut by 85%, writers fired and actors told to not bother getting into character.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Love it, excellent plot and CGI
Don't get put off by 50+ year old nerds who miss their younger days and can't take in any new information. The series has holograms and decent plot, so it's not "the real Star Trek"? WHO CARES?! It's an excellent show, superb update on a 50 year old script which it badly needed. If your favorite show is P.I. Magnum - go watch it again and stop crying about "stuff not being as good as back in my days". Jeez
The Mandalorian (2019)
Hardcore fans only
To get this out of the way - production quality is really low - it has more of a Muppet Show or Babylon 5 feel than what you would expect from shows in 2019. Acting is so so, plot is unclear or meh, ocassional cut-scene of space or a planet sort of help it, but all in all, I found myself wishing there were more episodes of Mr. Robot or other good series to watch while browsing on my phone with Mandalorian running on the screen... Really not a 8.9/10 experience, unless you are a truly hardcore fan of Star Wars universe and anything related to it is an automatic 10/10 for you.
