This was a shockingly good movie!
Introduction:
So why did i like this movie so much?
This movie is about a father who loses his daughter "gone girl" one night when she got to some study group. He gets a detective on the case and they together try to find his daughter. They use a very interesting way of showing this movie through the use of social media, and the entire movie are viewed through a computer.
The characters in this movie give a very good performance all the way,
It is very good storytelling and a tension that creeps up your spine, and you feel like your more and more on the edge of your seat,
One thing that really kept me on the edge was the way they showed what is happening. You start getting drawn in and you look for clues and think about what is happening through the whole movie.
It is a whole lot of commercial of different websites here and it work good.
You kind of see the story of this girl through internet and i get this nostalgia feeling when you see the OS version from windows xp, the birth of facebook and youtube. All of this is done very great while also drawing you into the story.
There is kind of a feeling that you are reading a Agatha Christie book and looking for clues and who the murder is. And it is some twists here and there that really shocked me.
Who is this movie for:
I think if you like mystery movies, thrillers this is a good choice to go for.
If you like movies like Gone Girl, Disturbia, Unfriended or Prisoners this movie is a good watch.
Summary:
I sit after this movie thinking and that i don't get much of when i watch recent movies. This was a very good put together movie with good twists, good performance, perfectly storytelling, very interesting points of view.
Conclusion:
I got my first born child this year and after watching this and see how random things can happen in life. What can happen to your child unknowingly i sit and feel terrified. What is to come of her life and what is around the next corner.
As a fresh father thinking how much you get to love your child and always make things matter for her. How much will you get to really know your child.
Had i not got a child my own maybe i not would have gotten so touched by this movie as i did.
This movie is very touching and frightening. And if you want to be on the edge of your seat go for it. Maybe you will sit with the same feeling as i did after watching it.
Godzilla 1985 (1985)
The king of monsters is back
Synopsis: This movie like the title says Godzilla returns. This time they bring in American and Russian military to the scene. A Russian submarine gets attacked and they blame the Americans for the happening. When they figure out that this is Godzilla returning back they want to use atomic warfare on it. But like the original Godzilla movie from 1954 the Japanese still have not forgotten the Hiroshima bombing and refuse to let the Russians and Americans use atomic bombs on Godzilla. They want to find another way to stop him.
Actors: These actors are not the best I have seen but did a fairly good job in this movie. Ken Tanaka have not been playing in any big things that I think people outside of Asia would know of. Yasuko Sawaguchi have acted in a bit more known works, like Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989), she have also been in another Toho Company monster movie called Orochi the Eight-Headed Dragon (1994). Yosuke Natsuki on the other hand may be the one who have played in most notable movies of these actors. The most well known movie he have starred in may be the Akira Kurosawa movie Yojimbo (1961), He have also been in other monster movies like Beauty and the Liquid Man (1958), Dagora the Space Monster (1964), Gihdorah the Three-Headed Monster (1964). Keiju Kobayashi have also been starring in a lot of movies but most of them not very well known outside of Asia. Maybe most known for his role in Kurosawa movie Sanjuro (1962). I actually think he did the best performance of the actors in this movie as the prime minister.
Cinematography: The sets here are all good like you expect from the Toho Studios when creating monster movies. The charming fact of the movies they make is what I mean is good cinema when you keep away from CGI at most. Like rockets from military wagons and planes they have created it themselves and it does not look very real but it looks cool. When you see they fire on Godzilla it is very cool scenes. The only CGI in most Godzilla movies are the radioactive breath that comes out of the mouth of Godzilla. I don't know if we should call it CGI actually but it is the closest to it you get in these movies. They create miniature versions of the cities and then the monster can go rampage there and it looks cool. And take note of what I say, it is not very good looking like wow but it looks cool and charming effect. Outside of all these bad CGI effects we get from Hollywood movies. One cool thing to take in mind before seeing this movie is a scene where a helicopter gets blasted down you see a billboard in the background of the Ghostbusters logo.
Music/Sound: The music is nothing very special in this one but the sound in Godzilla movies is always a treat. The roar of Godzilla is the best monster sound ever. The only thing that comes near may be the sound of the T-Rex in Jurassic Park, and that sound was inspired by the sound of the original Godzilla movie.
Costume/Make-up: In costumes I guess the only thing that can be mentioned is always the costume of Godzilla. It is a man inside that monster and that is what I love so much about the monsters in Asian monster movies. Not a computer generated monster but as close to the real thing that you can get and the costume is very good and detailed. The only other costumes to mention might be the ones that the military uses and well they are as they should be.
Summary: This is the first real sequel since the original Godzilla movie from Toho. And the first Godzilla movies since the original where he do not meet another monster to fight. The directors of this movie Koji Hashimoto and R.J. Kizer have not done much in main directing but many other movie related jobs. This movie is very good in the way that they wanted to take Godzilla to where he started if they succeeded or not is for each and everyone to decide. It may be a better watch for those loving the concept then the normal viewer. If you want the typical Hollywood way of movies stay away. If you like monster movies and foreign movies go for it. I liked it very much so this review may give you a bit of what to expect. Or point you in direction of other movies in the same genre.
Gojira (1954)
The mother of all giant monster movies.
Synopsis: Well I don't know where to start, I should probably written this in 1954 but I was not born yet so. And I think it is better to write reviews after you have watched many many movies before. This is the mother of all monster movies, I guess that the majority of movie fans have seen this so the review is more like a fan review from my side. And it is for the audience that have seen it and want to rate the review I make or by those who want to become a big movie fan. This is where the Kaiju genre started and in English it is giant monster. It starts with a roar from the monster of all monsters and if you listen closely you will recognize this sound from Jurassic Park by Steven Spielberg's T-Rex. The sound is taken from him. The movie itself is about Gojira (Godzilla) and it is one of the best out there. And if you think about what year this came out you understand what an amazing movie this was in 1954 when it came to theaters in Asia or mainly Japan. It is a mystery what all this is about from the beginning. A ship gets attacked by something and one of the survivors say it looked like the sea exploded. Hilarious quote by the way. They start to research this mysterious thing after some boats are getting attacked. They soon find out it is a sea monster from the Jura era. When the dinosaurs lived. They think it is woken up by atomic radiation. I will come to that in my summary of this review because it has a lot to do with the morale in this movie. You guessed right it is Godzilla that comes up from that sea and make the best movie monster of all time.
Acting: Well what should we say here the acting of Godzilla or the actors. The monster part is excellent enough said. But the actors I can say something about. He actually played in a lot of these Toho movies with monsters, like King Kong Escapes (1967), Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965), Mothra vs Godzilla (1964), Godzilla King of the Monsters. He did a good job in this movie actually and that is why he appears in other movies outside of this I guess. Momoko Kochi also became a little Toho icon after this movie. Half Human (1955), she also appears in Godzilla King of the Monsters, The Mysterians (1957), Godzilla vs. Destroyah. Did a good job in this movie, nothing very big to mention but still good. Takashi Shimura the biggest actor of them all in this movie. He acted in over 200 movies and some were very big titles from Japan. This guy plays in so many big movies from Japan it would be to much to mention my favorites but to name some of the big ones, it would be the Akira Kurosawa movies he played in many of the samurai movies from him and also played in 4 of the well known Kaiju movies from Toho. He is always a good watch and did a good job in this one. Last of them I wanted to talk about is Akihiko Hirata also represented in other Godzilla movies. And one of my favorite monsters. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974), Terror of Mechgodzilla (1975), also a little heads up he was in Ultraman: Monster big Battle (1976). He also did a great job here.
Cinematography: Well the setting is in Japan and some places in Tokyo mostly in the studio in Tokyo. And it is really great. Very good use of the camera angles by far from this era in the 50's.
Sound/Music: I already did say something about this but the sound of this monster is the best in history. It shivers down your spine and Jurassic Park made its own version of this sound. Try to compare them. The music is known even today by the movie industry. And will be there for all time.
Costumes/Make-up: The only thing to mention here is the Godzilla costume and it is absolutely amazing for its time. The way his body moves and the way his mouth moves at times is very good.
Summary: The director Ishiro Honda is one favorite to remember for all time. The man who created the monster genre like we know it today. I can't write up all of the movies I like about him but look him up on IMDb. I would recommend this to all but I can't promise that all will like it. If you like monster movies check out all the Toho movies like Gamera, Mothra, Ultraman, and Godzilla movie. You have many other monster movies by them to if you really like them. Some of them are really hard to come by but search on ebay and maybe you get lucky. But this movie is a masterpiece and everybody who love movies should watch this one time. And hopefully you get your mind in the direction to check out all of the Toho movies. I will review all of the Gamera and Godzilla movies very soon as I see them and take notes. So if you want more reviews keep up to date about my reviews. I am thinking of making video reviews on my youtube channel to if someone want to see my collection and have more fun with watching then reading reviews. As I was talking about earlier this movies morale is actually a bit of a propaganda movie. They still had a big grudge on the US for the Hiroshima bombing. And this goes on in this movie, I will not spoil anything big but have this in mind when watching it.
Deddobôru (2011)
Could have been very cool but failed
This is one of my hardest reviews so far in a way this movie is cool or the ideas are cool but everything is done bad. I like these kind of hilarious Asian movies that does everything crazy in them but this one failed in many ways. It is about a guy who have killed with his baseball killing move and will not do this move ever again. He is sent to prison for his actions and is forced to play on a baseball team of inmates. They have to play against another prison team of all female inmates. It is a game of bloody death. I would not call this a horror movie actually. It is just a comedy gore fest.
I never like CGI in modern movies it's becoming very bad cinema for in my opinion but on these kind of Asian movies it is just cool sometimes. In this movie it did not work at all. It is a shame they did not focus more on the other inmates personalities because that would have made this movie very cool. They have hilarious personalities but you never get to know any of them. The acting is over the top bad but I don't think anyone who ever want to watch this and hoping for good acting or good story.
As I said I like these kind of movies from Asia with gore and liters of blood in them but usually they are interesting to watch but this did nothing to get me interested or having much fun. Some scenes are very funny in a silly way though. Like one with a guy getting the baseball in his eye and it is stuck there for the rest of the movie. If this is the first movie you want to see from this kind of genre stay away I would recommend many others to begin with. Like Tokyo gore police (2008) starring the girl from Audition, Or maybe it is best to start with the legendary Battle Royal movie. This movie is in my opinion not worth watching but I guess if you seek these kind of movies like me I watch everything that looks interesting and a bit out of the normal cinema joy, you may like this one.
Bruiser (2000)
What to do with anger....
Synopsis: It is about a guy who works in a job with a crappy boss who is not good to anyone, a wife that cheats on him and a good friend that steals money from him. He start off imagining he kills people that treats him bad. You really feel this guy has some very big anger building up inside. Actually he feels that everybody around him treats him bad. He wakes up one day after a party, finding out the white mask he created on the party is stuck to his face. And the anger breaks loose.
Acting: Jason Flemyng did the best performance in this movie by far the way he change from miserable to anger is great. He have done a lot of movies in his career. To name a few like Lock, stock and two smoking barrels (1998), Snatch (2000), Transporter 2 (2005), Stardust (2007). Peter Stormare the well known Swedish actor. Also did a pretty good job in this movie as the very bad boss. Just did not care about anything. To name some of his big list of movies like Fargo (1996), The lost world: Jurassic park (1997), Hamilton (1998), Prison break the TV series (2005). He have also been voicing the mercenaries games. Leslie Hope did nothing big but a very decent job in this movie. She have also done her part in movies but nothing very big, maybe mostly known for her role in the TV series '24'. Nina Garbiras did nothing very special performance in this movie. Have done some roles outside of this one, mostly in TV series like Leap Years (2001), Boomtown (2002).
Cinematography: Most of the filming was shot in Toronto and Ontario, Canada. Was a good location to film this movie nothing to point out as bad about it. The setting was OK. Nothing big in the camera work but Romero is not known much for his camera work.
Make-up: In this category I usually point out costumes and makeup but in these kinds of movies it is better to just talk about makeup. The main thing here is the mask it is very well done actually. But now we talk about man behind the zombie genre the master of masks and make-up. So the mask here is awesome and it is mostly it to mention.
Music/Sound: The music here is great and Romero actually did make a video earlier in his career for the band who play in this film. So they made 2 original songs for him and played them in the party scene in this movie. That is pretty awesome. The sound mixing is forgettable but it fits in with the scenes pretty well. And makes a good tension for the movie.
Summary: We can start off saying this is George A. Romero's better works since the awesome zombie flicks he made. Like Night of the living dead (1968), Dawn of the dead (1978), Day of the dead (1985). I would not call this a major horror movie though. It is tipping more over to the thriller genre with horror elements in it. It is only one thing that made the rating from me this low and that is the way the movie progresses later on. I would have liked it to go in the same direction as it started off because that was really amazing. If I should point out some similar movies if you liked this one the first movie that comes to my mind is Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise, it is very similar actually. If you are a Romero fan you should absolutely try this one out. If you like a good thriller I don't really know if I would recommend it to all but it is pretty good, and worth a watch.
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)
Very sick movie (not for everybody)
Synopsis: This movie is about a crazy German doctor (Dieter Laser) that seeks to experiment a project on humans. He want to pin them together and make a pet out of them (human centipede).I think mainly because his dogs died and i got the impression he tried the same thing on them. The doctor (surgeon) starts off by getting two female tourists Lindsay and Jenny (Ashley Williams and Ashlynn Yennie). He also gets an Asian boy Katsuro (Akihiro Kitamura) to get his creation started. Will he make this project complete??
Cinematography: The setting is in Germany and mostly at the house of the crazy doctor. The setting looks OK nothing very bad to point out. They have thought of how a doctor would have it in his home and done the set like it in my opinion should look like. Very clean and sterile place. And many sick paintings on the walls. If you have read any of my other horror reviews you may know that I am not a big fan of CGI effects in modern horror movies because they never seem to look good. In this movie it is nothing of CGI and for me this is a big plus.
Acting: The acting in this movie is actually very good especially from the German doctor. Let me give some info about the main actors. Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser) have done a good load of German movies I have not seen any of them. He may be more famous by others maybe for his appearance in the TV series Lexx. If you are German movie fan maybe his best performance there is in a movie called Kaspar Hauser from 1993. Lindsay (Ashley Williams) have not done too many movies, nothing to mention anyway. She did an OK job in this movie. Jenny (Ashlynn Yennie) have not done many movies before but has some upcoming in 2014. She is in an episode of True Blood called ''in the evening''. Nothing much to say about Katsuro (Akihiro Kitamura) either but he did an episode of Heroes called ''Acceptance''.
Music/Sound: This is not the kind of horror movie you would think or care much about the sound and music, but it is OK nothing to point out there. It was nothing that was out of place or anything. If I should point out a favorite sound-wise in this movie, it may be the sound mixing of the more gory scenes.
Costume/Make-up: This is not the kind of movie where you would look much into the costumes but everything looks good, nothing out of place for its time of place or anything. When I talk about make-up it is not always like how they look with make-up. In a horror movie it is more like how the blood looks if it is that and how the mask or things like that looks. In this it is mostly the blood that is the center and that looks great. Also how they look in the scenes where they are the centipede and that looks OK I guess. Not my cup of tea to watch but.
Summary: This is a good horror movie for those liking it a bit sick if I should call it that. Because this is a very sick movie I got a bit disgusted at times, so this is not a movie for everybody. Would not recommend it for a first date movie. I always like to recommend other movies that comes to mind for those who like the movies I review. If they want something more likewise. The first movie series that comes to mind is the Hostel movies. If you want more of this movie it is a sequel 'The Human Centipede 2 (2011)' and it is a third movie coming up later in 2013 but it is delayed as far as I know at the moment. For the director of this movie Tom Six I have not seen anything more of him. He has not made many movies but he is the director of all the Human Centipede movies. All in all this is not a bad horror movie but really not for everybody. It was a bit too much for me but if you like it sick and disgusting in a way go for it.
The Pact (2012)
It is a twisted and decent movie.
Director: Nicholas McCarthy Main Cast: Caity Lotz, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Haley Hudson, Agnes Bruckner
Synopsis: This movie is about 2 sisters that have lost their old mother and is going to her funeral. The first sister Nichole (Agnes Bruckner) comes to her mother's house first and strange noises appears. This is where we all know what kind of horror movie this may be. Nichole has a daughter that is staying home with the baby sitter Liz (Kathleen Perkins). When the other sister arrives Annie (Caity Lotz) Nichole is gone. What have happened?
Acting: The acting in this movie is great I have nothing to point out here. They are not very famous actors but why do we need big actors if we can find new ones that does the job. Let me give some info of the main cast here. Caity Lotz have been in some movies before this one and maybe the most notably is a TV show actually (Mad Men), not a big role there but she was there. She looks very beautiful and does a good job, could have done bigger roles if she got the chance. Kathleen Perkins have a lot of movies up and coming and have done a lot of TV series before this movie. Haley Hudson did a very good job in this movie and have done some TV episodes before this. Agnes Bruckner have been in some horror movies before like ''Vacancy 2'' and ''Kill theory'' but she also stared in ''24'' the TV series.
Cinematography: The setting here is really good. The camera work is pretty good nothing much to hang the finger on. It is not academy award material but that I believe you did not come to watch this movie for that.
Costume/Make-up: Costume design is like it should be in this setting. Some CGI for parts and effects but it is charming in a way that make it look pretty good and scary/creepy at times. That is how we like it in this kind of horror movies.
Music/Sound: The music is pretty nice but the sound is what caught my attention it was perfect for this movie. Very intense sounds that was at the right place where it should be in the creepy scenes.
Summary: All in all a very good horror movie that I would recommend to people who loves ghost and haunting movies. What I really like about this movie is that it starts off with some story and ends with something you did not expect. It is like you feel this is a kind of movie genre but then it might twist it to another. I have to say that this movie had a scene that I loved. Not to spoil anything but it has a similar feel to a scene from the original Halloween movie from 1978. And that is one of my favorite horror movies. I have a bit split feeling about the end of this movie. I guess some would love it and some would hate it because they thought it was another sort of movie. The director Nicholas McCarthy have not done many movies before this but he should keep doing horror because he has something good going on here. And a little heads up, it is a The Pact 2 coming up soon so you get a sequel coming your way for those who are horror collectors like myself. At last I will just give you some other similar movies if you are interested in that. For those very interested it was made a short movie of this in 2011 before this one and it was remade into this. If you like ghost/haunting movies try out The innocents (1961) and the remake The others (2001). Or maybe try out The Shutter (2004) or the remake The Shutter (2008) really creepy and good movies. So I will say have an open mind with this movie and enjoy it for what it is. It is very good at some things and not so good at others.
Midnight Movie (2008)
Pretty decent slasher movie.
Synopsis: This movie is about some teenagers working in a midnight movie theater screening a new slasher movie. Some friends of Bridget (Rebekah Brandes) who work there come to see the movie. What they don't know is that this movie was the favorite movie of a mental institution guy who killed a lot of people in the institution right before the movie was going up on this theater. It seems like this mental guy has something to do with the things that happen in this theater. And this movie seems to be a bit cursed. What shall they do when the killer in the movie comes out of it.
Acting: It is not the best of acting from any of them but it is done at the standards that you would expect from a movie like this. No one of the actors do something noteworthy or special out of the acting, but it works fine. I can say that they do a better job then what I would call a typical B-movie standard and that is a plus. For the major actors in this one like Rebekah Brandes, she have done some other horror movies but I have not seen any of those yet. And she is also coming out with some new movies in 2013 and 2014. Daniel Bonjour has also done some movies before this but nothing worth mentioning and has some movies coming out in 2013 and 2014. Brea Grant may be one of the most famous in this movie just sad she did not have a bigger part in this movie. She may be most known for her roles in Dexter and Heroes TV Shows. The director Jack Messitt this is his first and only movie so far and that is sad because he have something going on with this movie. Cinematography: I would like to point out that it is a good setting a nice small town movie theater setting. It looks OK and nothing feels out of place. The camera work I actually liked very much. Jack Messitt did a good work behind camera. Nice worked out camera angles. I would also say that it has a very cool intro that they have done good work with. Not this usual boring intro but with some kind of fill out documents with the credited cast and crew. I feel when you have a good intro you set the mood for the audience and what they feel to expect from the rest. So the intro gets a big plus.
Music/Sound: One of my personal most important aspects of a horror movie is the music and the sounds. In this movie they had done this very good. Great sound mixing for the right moment and right scenes for the movie. And back to the intro again, I think they should have replaced the song in the intro with something a bit more horror-like. But I guess it works fine for the teenage audience, it is a teenage slasher flick after all. Out from that all music and sound was pretty good.
Costume/Make-up: Nothing much to say here everything looked good with the costumes and I really liked the killers mask well done. When it comes to the blood it was very good done. The only thing I would say here is I hate the use of bad CGI. I think that if you can't do it with the amount of money you have for the film skip trying to use CGI. It is a scene in the movie where they use some electricity to kill someone and this is too much use of in my opinion CGI. It just ruins a bit of the movie. They made movies without the CGI in old movies and you can make it now. If it looks real go for it if not just skip that part.
Summary: I think a lot of people would like this movie it is not perfect but a good movie for a late night slasher. It is the typical teenage slasher but it is done well and it has nothing very new that you have not seen before. It has those clichés you know from many of these kind of slasher movies, but it is a good movie if you like slasher movies. I would recommend it to people who likes this genre. All in all a perfect slasher if you are not looking for something very new and original stuff. I would compare it with Texas chainsaw massacre and Friday the 13th but in my eyes those are the better if you have not watched them. I don't know if I liked the ending very much but I think it works OK. As I mentioned before on this review Jack Messitt have only made this movie and I guess it is because this movies budget was at 1,000,000$ and I guess it did not go in plus. But it could also be that he did not have anything new for us after this.
Headhunter (2005)
Good idea, but done bad.
Headhunter Movie Review
Synopsis: This movie is a horror/thriller centered around Ben (Benjamin Parrillo) who is not so fond about his work. He gets in contact with Sarah (Kristi Clainos) a headhunter who he starts working for. He gets a job at an office at night, that soon becomes a strange and creepy place. Strange things happens there as he starts to realize that things are not what he expected. He soon finds out this headhunter Sarah is not who Ben thought she was. He now starts to investigate around this Sarah and things starts to come out in light.
Acting: The acting in this movie was very poor actually. Benjamin Parrillo mostly played in episodes of TV shows did not do a very good job in this movie acting wise. Matt Bushell also this typical known for TV shows did not bring any notably good acts here but he was not very much represented in the movie. Kristi Clainos is also mostly known for TV shows but she did the best job in this movie in my opinion. Very beautiful actress that could have made it into bigger movies or at least more movies. She makes a good effort in this movie as the headhunter would love to see more of her. She actually was cast in the last minute as Sarah Tierny in this movie.
Cinematography: The first impression of the movie was very bad for me personally. I love to look at movies not just for the story or acting but I am giving out points for camera handling and camera angles. This movie had nothing to speak of with the camera angles everything was shot pretty much in the same view all through the movie. The sets was OK but the lighting specifically in the darker scenes was bad. Costume/Make-up: The costumes are really OK nothing out of line of this movie and its setting. The make-up is another story. They use very much CGI and as a fan of the 80's horror and slasher movies they could have done a lot better in this one. This is the era of CGI and when you don't have money for it don't ruin the movie with that sort of thing. All the faces from the ghosts and such in this movie is CGI made. Why not just use simple make-up it would look much better. Even a Halloween mask from a store could have saved them from this. And then I would have given it a better score. In a scene where someone loses a hand they even use CGI for that so you can see the bones sticking out of the arm, but the CGI is so bad that it look too silly. In my opinion they should have dropped the CG in this scene and just shown that she had no hand and used the blood. And for that matter the blood looks very good in this movie so they score points for that.
Music/Sound: The music is very bad it does not fit much in with this movie, and the sounds just slipped my mind, and for me the sounds in a horror movie are some of the most important things. I can't even remember the sounds after I watched this.
Summary: My conclusion after this is I am left with a bad movie that have a story and ideas that are very good actually for a horror movie. I would never recommend this to anyone. Maybe if you are a very big horror fan you might like some parts of it. For me I am a very big horror fan but it lacked almost everything a horror movie should have. But as I said before in this review Kristi Clainos did a good job and scores the only points for me in this movie. Paul Tarantino the director of this movie have only made one more movie the same year this one came out. He have some cool ideas but it needs work.
