Da yu hai tang (2016)
Too much like Studio Ghibli, with convoluted story!
View this movie on Shout! released Blu-ray disc. I very much would love to like this movie, but creativity is one big problem here. Animations were well done but just too much like Studio Ghibli animations - including movements and features of the characters (just look at Kun sister).
There is also a problem with the story. Even though the producers/director claimed that it was "inspired" by Chinese mythology, there is nothing much recognisable for me here, even though I am Chinese. It doesn't help when help that Chun, the main character said that she don't believe in God, yet they themselves have some kind of magical powers. This magical-powered beings were just being referred as "The Other". What was that? Why with all the power they have, they couldn't stop the flood?
I also viewed the Bonus Features, and understood that it creator had been through a lot just to make the film, but that is no excuse for the convoluted script (could this be the reason why he had problem in finding investor). Is it because China is a communist country where they were warn not to lick the script with any religion? I wonder.
Yes, it got beautiful imagery, animations, and great score from Kiyoshi Yoshida. Yet, this movie is more of a copy of Studio Ghibli (especially Spirited Away! Just look at all the cute creatures). It kind of sad to see China animation ended up like that. They did much better work before. I am not surprise that it received divided reviews in China.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Well made "B" movie!
Great concept, great actors, but ultimately a "B" movie, much like Cloverfield! I very much like to like the movie, but there were many things the characters did that make no sense! It make one wonder how they could survived for 480+ days!
My verdict: it's a stupid movie! Director should just end the movie, like Signs (another stupid movie), instead of an opened ending for sequel! I guess job is hard to come by this day!
Tron: Legacy (2010)
It was just OK!
The original TRON was ground breaking with pioneer in using computer imagery, even though another half of the effect were done with old fashion hand paint animation and optical printing. Nowadays, computer is used for almost every movies, so I expect a lot more from TRON LEGACY!
Well, I am kind of disappointed and certainly won't consider it out of this world! It was just an OK movie with well control execution and budget. It is certainly nothing near AVATAR! AVATAR was almost 100% done with computer animation and special effect! Here, most part of the movie happened at night! That already save them a lot on back ground detail. Then again, some of the details are really unnecessary. What is smoke and dust doing in the computer world? Mile stone in computer generated special effect? Far from it, unless you born yesterday! The updated vehicles were nice and really cool though!
3D imagery? Once again, I feel FLAT (much like AVATAR)! Once again, it shown me that once I focus on the story, it really make no different to me - 2D or 3D. The feeling of depth is just not that great. Just another excuse for theater to charge extra for that flimsy 3D glasses! No more 3D movie for me!
On the musical score? Director seem unable to decide whether it should be more techno or full orchestra style, so he given us both. The impression is neither here or there. I certainly prefer techno style in the original TRON.
Still using DISC for storage? During the original TRON, 5.25 inch diskette was used for storage, followed by 3.5 inch diskette, CD, DVD, and now spinning disc is almost at the end of the road as Flash Drive and SD Card are taking over. A little behind time for a futuristic movie?
No complaint on actors. Most did an adequate jobs. No Oscar winning performance. Story wise, all over the place. Why program need to eat? They only need energy source, maybe like water in the original TRON. Over here, they have wine and eat asparagus! None of the character make me care for them (as compare to the original TRON), even the death of Kevin Flynn (Spoiler!). OK, he died. So? Is that necessary?
That's all I want to say as a sci-fi movie fan. For an almost 50 years old guy, maybe I just get a little ahead of time! Otherwise some of you excited guys must have just born yesterday!
Star Trek (2009)
Disappointing!
Don't believe the hype!! The movie is lousy (but very loud!), story is stupid, special effect is messy, Enterprise is ugly (it bridge is messy and cluttered with displays), camera shots are shaky and never keep still (Jason Bourne style!)! This is nothing like Gene Roddenberry Star Trek, and Yes, you don't have to be intelligent to enjoy this movie.
All the actors were doing their jobs, though I found new Scotty kind of silly! Is he high on drugs? I am a Star Trek fan for 30 years, and this reboot almost completely kill of my interest.
This is my second disappointments for this year summer blockbusters. X-Men Origin: Wolverine is my first. How to attract audience back to theater with such quality? No wonder people keep doing illegal downloading! Who want to spend expensive movie tickets for a lousy movie?
Chi bi (2008)
150 minutes of boredom! Disappointing!
To me, this movie is a big over-hype disappointment! Romance of Three Kingdoms is such great story based on history, and the Battle of Red Cliff is THE MAJOR EVENT! I was very much looking forward for this movie, but I guess John Woo is just not Peter Jackson! I would have thought he should have learned a lot from his Hollywood experience. Turn out that my opinion of him as an over-hype average Hong Kong director is right on, just like Tsui Hak!
First major problem is the script! Instead of follow the original story, which is already full of detail, they added in many unnecessary elements, such as Zhou Yu help his wife deliver a horse! According to John Woo over a TV interview in Singapore, it supposed to make Zhou appear more human, but the whole scene is just so pretentious!
The part of Zhou Yu and Zhu-Ge Liang playing musical instrument and the final battle scene was also overly long (OK, this part is just like Peter Jackson: King Kong dinosaur stampede scene!)! It just go on and on, and I was really bored! There were just too many pacing problems in this movie. It could easily trim by 30 minutes, instead of 150 minutes of boredom! The kind of problem commonly happened to Hong Kong movie. The script obviously written by some Hong Kong scriptwriter!
Some reviewers said there was element of brotherhood, just like many other John Woo movies. To me, the brotherhood element in Red Cliff is paper-thin!
As for the music score, it just sounded too Japanese! HELLO! It supposed to be Chinese Classical Story! And the beating drum just sounded too much like Crouching Tiger score by Tan Dun.
Special CGI effect of Red Cliff is passable, but the concept is certainly very wrong! Red Cliff is part of the Yangtze River, and it's so broad, you can't really see the other shore! Red Cliff production designer decided instead to make it look more like scenic Guilin in Guangxi, which is totally wrong! It certainly looks quite narrow for big naval battle!
Action choreography was boring, and stupid sometime! Action choreographer Corey Yuen seem not sure whether to design it as fantasy martial art form or realistic martial art form, and some scene is just ridiculous! Maybe they think audience taste is still stuck in the 70's Shaw Bros era! Most generals should be fighting while riding horses, but instead they walk and fight most of the time! Maybe they should be equipping their actors with better riding scale or use a stunt doubles!
Actor wise, mainland actor Zhang Feng-Yi (as Cao Cao) was the only outstanding one. Tony Leung Chiu Wai appeared tired. Takeshi Kaneshiro looked full of confident to the point of almost clueless! Lin Chi-Ling was more like a flower vase! The rest of the casts were just passable. Maybe there weren't much chances for them to shine as characterization were poor overall.
Red Cliff is an overall disappointment, either as drama or action movie! If one really interested in Romance of Three Kingdom, go read the book, or maybe rent or buy the China made series! Even the Japan made anime Yokoyama Mitsuteru Sangokushi is much better!
And I certainly won't waste my money for the Red Cliff part II!
