Nanban (2012)
I couldn't enjoy 3 idiots after watching this movie.
Simply because I watched Nanban first and Vijay spoiled the 3 idiots experience for me. :(
I think a Tamil remake of this movie was very much necessary and Shankar did the right thing by just doing that. Surya is probably a better choice for Amir's role, but I heard he declined it. Smart decision! :) He had no option except to go for a popular star and so 'Vijay'. I don't know who else would have fit for the role. Anyway. May be Jeeva.
It would be a lengthy review if I have to list what was missing in Vijay's performance. At a high level, 'the acting' was missing. Just like any other movie he did what he could.
I enjoyed (in the order)
- Jeeva's performance - Sathyaraj's virus act ( apt casting by Shankar) - Sathyan's comedy act (but a little bit of overacting and I couldn't see him as a bright student) - SJ Surya's cameo - Shankar's direction ( especially he didn't try to bring in new stuff that was not needed) - Harris songs
7aum Arivu (2011)
Good - Story line Better - Creative Direction Best - Tamil Movie
I hope you would agree with me that all Indians tend to compare the following kind of Indian movies (any language) with Hollywood movies
- has a story line which reflects life of a high society people - problems with latest technological advancements - sci-fi subject - has a story line influenced by a Hollywood story
IMO Indian movies usually fall short in some department or the other. Especially latest bollywood movies. The problems I usually see with such movies are
- No creativity in direction or story telling. - Screen writing does not match Indian life style/culture (copy of Hollywood script). - Bad computer graphics / Effects
Murugadoss's - 7 aum arivu seems to prove that a quality movie can be given by Indian directors by absorbing the story telling capabilities of Hollywood directors. You may be able to guess what is going to happen in most scenes and his story telling techniques could resemble scenes from different Hollywood movies. But what I see is the justification that the scenes are really necessary for this movie and that it is taken precisely. Also he doesn't deal with explaining every scene thru dialogues which most directors do. Some are left for audience to imagine which makes the movie really crisp. I see a quality movie that is taken in Hollywood style with chennai in the backdrop. There are only a handful of Indian directors (like Ashutosh Gowarikar) who could handle these tough subjects. IMO Murugadoss is one among them.
Definitely a must see movie.
Dasavatharam (2008)
Good attempt. One must watch it in theater. Still not on par with Navarathri.
At the outset, I would have to say that I agree with all the negative comments posted by others. There are flaws in story, logic, make up, graphics etc.,
But what makes this movie stand out from rest of the Tamil movies are the very same things that are mentioned above. This is a very good attempt to give an Hollywood style movie for Tamil cine goers. But definitely could've done much better. Sivaji's navarathri is a better entertainer compared to this one. Story line involving America could've been traded for story and acting by saving some money for Oscar. But then my suggestion is to watch this movie in theaters.
Pros
- First 20 mins. (There is a message at the end why it was included)
- Kamal's acting in four characters. Especially the Villain one.
- The climax scenes.
- Very unusual story line.
- Not another Tamil movie.
- Graphics
- Mallika's character after her intro dance.
- Asin's beauty.
Cons
- Un-necessary extravaganza and budget.
- Too many unwanted Kamal's characters
- English-Tamil dialogue scenes. (Un-necessary foreign mogam)
- Graphics. :)
- Makeup for Kamal.
- Kamal has not given enough emphasis to the acting part for most of his characters. He could've dome it a LOT better.
My suggestion is to watch this movie definitely. But...
Don't go to this movie because of the hype. Don't go thinking this movie is as good as a Hollywood movie. Don't go thinking kamal has done his best. Don't go thinking this movie is a very good entertainer.
Verdict - This is a Kamal Vs Kamal movie.
Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
Neither Rock Solid nor Utter Garbage
I really wanted to 7. I just took it down a point caz through out the movie I felt that there was no logic.
I read a few reviews before buying my ticket. I had my expectation set to 5 I guess. I really loved all of the Die hard movies. And I'll say I enjoyed this one too. There is a lot of action the best are shown in the trailer. But there is lot more that you would enjoy.
Yes.. some dialogues are meaning less. Yes.. lacks major logic. Yes.. has some useless characters Yes.. not the best of the sequels
But it is very much entertaining. If you are expecting the story to be realistic then there is nothing that you'll like. If you want Bruce action and mild comedy and his punch lines.. you have lot to enjoy.
The very basic reason people are complaining is because screen play isn't perfect to justify the plot/story. They should not have picked such a hi-tech crime for this movie. If there was less hi-tech and more of common crime or terrorism... it would've justified the 8+ rating.
