Earth 2 (1994)
A series that was on the right track
I remember watching this when I was a kid, but never seen the whole season.
For the last two weeks, I've been watching the whole season from the beginning till the end, even it had some goofs in it, some holes and illogical approaches, it was still a nice and an interesting piece.
I thought The Sliders series were my favourite, but that show went just silly and stupid (except the first season, and kinda the last one was good too), and right now I know there is something better than that- Earth 2.
Although, I am a bit wondering why did they cancel it? We had so many stupid serials out there back then, but this one ended just with one season. Why? And I'm also wondering how it would go, how the events would unfold for the new colonists on this new Earth? Did they reach the New Pacifica? We will never know...
Fire in the Sky (1993)
If you call a movie based on a true story...
...bese it on that story.
I recommend everyone, to read the part with the abduction in the book by Travis Walton, before or after watching this movie. You can find this part on the internet, even on Travis' official web site. You will see what I mean and some people here.
Yes, the abduction sequence in the movie is cool and kinda scary, but it's not what really happened (or was written in the book that this movie is based on). And many other things didn't really happened like they were shown in this movie.
Again, aliens are blood driven monsters, made by Hollywood.
This is the example for how the abduction part in "Fire in the Sky" doesn't fit the plot:
It shows, right on the end, a driller or something that is going straight at his eye. So what...they poked his eye out, and he still has it after the abduction? And also...how did he escape, when he was "glued" to the table and those creatures had super-human strength?
They've mixed the whole thing up, just because they thought what? Because in the book it was boring? Then don't make a movie based on that it, make something else!!
I gave it 3/10. 1 point- for acting 1 point- for music 1 point- still, the abduction sequence is nicely done.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
I've seen the remake 2 days ago, and today I've watched the old one from the 50's.
"Helen Benson: What were you, before you were human? Klaatu: It would only frighten you"
And that quote missed the point of the original's message.
IMO, the original movie had a message, while the remake missed it all. Yes, it still keeps the people's stupidity (which still exists in reality), but in this remake, they decided (for some reason) to change "placing nuclear missiles in the space", into a "global warming and destroying the planet with our greedy existence". Oh yeah, that's right, we already have nuclear missiles around our planet, so it's not a bad thing anymore!? Let's place it with global warming. In the next 50 years global warming will be "ok" so we will do another remake of this movie, but changing global warming into a...overused breathable air!
Don't be ridiculous, this movie was not about saving the Earth from our stupidity, but saving "ourselves" (the human race) from our stupidity. And I think that was the reason it was told in 50's, because manly...it was not far after the first atomic bomb was used (Hiroshima in 1945) and the first mass UFO encounters (aka. flying saucers). It was a message that someone fits even today.
So let's take a look on the cast that is mostly interested me- Klaatu
Klaatu with Keanu looks and sound like a robot or a monster hidden inside of a human body, while Klaatu in the old ones (by Michael Rennie) was a human just like us. And that was the point of, it made a mystery about who they were, because they might be as us- humans. The director went the easy way, explained that Klaatu is a some sort of beast inside a human body (the quote above), and that we would be scared of it. Although, Keanu is a good actor for this movie, but the role he is playing was dumped down. Klaatu was a smart, peaceful and friendly guy. Klaatu in this remake is a soulless psychopath with stupid x-men-like powers.
Seriously, why the hell did they give him special powers like bringing people from the dead? Why? The machine that brought Klaatu from the dead in the original movie was more logical and intelligent than this, unintelligent and stupid crap.
And I also don't like how they linked the theory of evolution in the movie. I'm not a creationist, or evolutionist, or scientologist, I just think things are still not well explained yet, and the original movie wasn't linked to neither evolution nor creationism.
The only things I liked were: 1. micro, nano robots that were able to eat us all (good idea for a quick, mass destruction) 2. reference to the religion, with those "arks" (although, the idea of "saving the planet" is stupid right from the bottom) 3. Special FX (which is a normal thing in todays Hollywood movies)
After seeing this, I gave it 7/10, but after seeing the old one, I'm giving it 3/10, because Mr Derrickson missed the point of the movie. He made another "Oh noz! Alienz want to destroy us again!!" cartoon.
Iron Man (2008)
Pretty good
I was never a comic book reader, and I've had enough of all action, super effects, hyped up stuff which are coming right now from USAwesomnesswannabe. So, I will not be talking about how this movie lives to the comic books, rather this I will look at the movie itself, as if it was not based on the comic book.
I liked it! I know, a lot of stupid and hyped up stuff is coming out right now (I'm looking at games too), but it doesn't mean all action films are bad because we have a lot of them already! And Iron Man is an example for a good action movie.
Yes, probably lots of stuff they put in there are unrealistic. But hey! This is a movie based on the comic book! And at least, there is some good and smart humour and some thinking! Not just shooting, shooting and explosions.
This is a good action movie, and that's it! It's or great, it's not fantastic, it's not lame, it's not horrible...it's Good.
Fallout 3 (2008)
Not Fallout
Many fans of the Fallout series were waiting for another sequel to the one of the best Role Playing Games in the history- Fallout.
The first Fallout came out around the same date when the first Bethesda's TES game did- Daggerfall. Both games had different mechanics (Fallout was ISO view with Turn-based combat, and Daggerfall was First Person Perspective with Real Time combat) and they were a totally different games. Bethesda's game was mainly based on action and dungeon crawl. Fallout's world was huge but somehow full of life of the destroyed civilisation after a nuclear holocaust. Bethesda's games were very...empty and uninspired.
The Fallout's creators' main target of the game was to emulate a PnP games feeling. That is why they've chosen a turn-based combat, and for TB combat, the isometric view is the best choice. First person perspective and real time combat was designed far before turn-based and ISO view.
Second target of the designers was to get rid off those dungeon crawls, fantasy driven with orcs and elves, feeling. They wanted to change the point of view of all RPGs back then, take the game style out from the fantasy world (Daggerfall for example) and put it into a sci-fi setting with "F" words and "S" words within the deep and very enjoyable dialogue. And they have succeeded!
So, to get to the point after this damn introduction. What Bethesda Softworks did with Fallout? They did the same game they were doing for years (TES series) and painted it with "Fallout" name on it.
Dongeons are now subways, and most NPCs look and sound like they were copied from the Oblivion and pasted in the Fallout world. And in the original Fallouts, the game made a feeling of "loneliness" in the endless wasteland, and NPCs? wow, even kids would rather steal something from you while asking for help.
Although, the game would be good as a sand-alone game...but it's NOT! It's called "Fallout 3" and don't forget that this was supposed to be a sequel, not something else!!
PS. This is in short, you don't want to know how long the whole thing would be like ;)
