Salt (2010)
A crazy ride but one hell of a good one!
I've seen some films this week but I think Salt has definitely been the best watch so far. I know it is a stretch of one's imagination but I genuinely felt it was believable stretching if you know what I mean. Sure Jolie jumps from truck to truck bare foot whilst they are travelling at over 60 mph but if we refused to believe that, then we would never have been given Wizard of Oz, Independence Day, The Green Mile etc etc etc.
The story took 0 seconds to get to grips with and doesn't mess around at getting to the point which is what I like in films. And Jolie does a sound job as Salt. She takes damage, she gets hurt, she has someone to love and she can kick ass! If you want to spend a good 2 hours being thrilled then I suggest you watch this film. I'm not a devoted Jolie fan however (Wanted I thought was drab) but this is a great film and whoever says otherwise is a gimp.
The Final Destination (2009)
Biggest load of predictable tripe for a long time
The first FD movie was a genuine chiller/thriller ride with some real suspense. The sequel was actually quite good if a little over the top. The third movie was ridiculously overblown and predictable. And now we have The Final Destination. At first I thought maybe this instalment had reinvented the series but how wrong I was.
The fact that this is the first of the lot to be produced in 3D does not, in my opinion, give the film any more credibility. The death scenes are imaginative and gory and pulls no punches but the way they happen is where it gives you a pain in the eyes to watch. Switches are switched on in the easiest manner, car sun roofs open and close on their own, people crossing the road without looking both ways etc. I was asking so many questions during this film it was getting really hard to keep up with the story! By the time the credits rolled, I had actually belted out a couple of laughs too! But the laughs weren't because the film had any moments of comedy, just because everything was happening so predictably it was unreal. They should've left these movies at FD1, 2 at the most.
Saw III (2006)
The weakest in the series
I am a big fan of the 'Saw' series and I was naturally anticipating Saw 3. To be perfectly honest, it really was the worst out of the series.
The horror and gore is on top form and the various traps that a fluent in the movie are inventive but my problem with this film is that it is TOO relentless and I don't remember a single character surviving (even though there was many chances for a few of them to live through the story) it kin of got repetitive because I knew that EVERYONE was going to die.
My other problem is the painfully irritating main character who seems to take forever to make up his mind on whether to forgive the people 'responsible' for his sons accidental death, then just as he decides the good option, they end up dead! That really annoyed me.
With a franchise like this, you have to tread very carefully that the story doesn't dwindle and fizzle out and I thought the series was dying out with this movie because it didn't offer us anything new or anything to care about. The only difference is we find out a few twists at the end but wasn't enough for me.
Don't be disappointed however, as Saw 4 was much, much better.
Lake Placid 2 (2007)
So bad it's funny, but ain't supposed to be!
Today I thought I'd give it a whirl and watch a sequel to a funny but quite thrilling and scary at times. I thought this would follow in the original's footsteps but I was wrong!
The first thing I noticed was the painfully bad, stiff and empty acting from EVERY single soul in this movie! They wander around a set that looks like somebody's back garden and scream all over the place and chant irrelevant and childish comments that don't add to the plot or character. The acting itself is so hammy, it almost resembles a 1950's toothpaste advert!
The second but the most important thing which made me laugh but in two halves was the effects: its the 21st century and it made me feel sick to watch a computer generated crocodile super-imposed onto the screen so badly when movies in the 30's had better effects than this trash!
Overall I did have some laughs with this film but for all the wrong reasons: 1) Acting is beyond terrible and sets another all time low for future crap movies 2)Special effects are not special at all and they look like they were designed and filmed by a bunch of college students with a £200 budget. 3)It irritates me that in this day and age, people still make this drivel and why would they bother if they know they're not going to do a worthy job of it.
Street Kings (2008)
Not THAT bad!
If I'm totally honest, I really enjoyed Street Kings. It pulled no punches with the action and the story was juicy enough to keep my eyes open and exited. Anybody who says this movies is totally rubbish needs some head treatment!!!
All the characters are well written and acted (it's also good to see Keanu Reeves back on the big screen) apart from the irritating Hugh Laurie who is pretending to be an "American" IA officer with the terrible accent! Other than that, you do actually feel for the characters.
I watched this movie with my mates at the cinema and NONE of us guessed that the coppers were behind the plot! And I don't think i'm that stupid!
Overall: great acting, great setting, funny at times/violent at times. Good movie!
Steptoe and Son Ride Again (1973)
Harold! Come and undo me!
This movie could very well be my funniest and favourite film! If, like me you are a Steptoe fan, you will find this movie perfect. Albert and Harold are on excellent form as the cat and mouse father and son characters. They also utilise the whole of their characters from the series in this film.
The antics that made them famous from the long-running series is just what the viewer gets here whether its Harold having to go to work with a sandwich made from fag hash and mangle-flattened cheese! or Albert sneezing on a prime cut of steak just to get it cheaper ("It's not for me, it's for the dog"!)
The previous Steptoe outing was very commendable but I feel it didn't give us enough to satisfy us for 90 minutes. However, '...Ride Again' has to be the best movie conversion from a t.v comedy yet.
Trust me, you will enjoy this movie if you enjoy the series and the characters then this is perfect.
