Abgeschnitten (2018)
Finally a deserving Fitzek adaptation
I just came back from the cinema and we saw "Abgeschnitten" as part of my Birthday gift. What can I say? It was finally the adaptation Fitzek deserves. As the best german thriller author there is, Fitzek already has a pretty cinematic way of writing. So I was stunned that movie adaptations of his material never quite seemed to work.
"Abgeschnitten" breaks this cycle. We were at the edge of our seats because we couldn't remember how the story turned out since it's been a couple of years that we read the book. So we really really were eager to find out and every step of the way was tension filled and at times quite creepy.
The story moves along at a nice pace and never gets boring. The gore is sometimes quite graphic but always serves the story and its origin (Fitzek wrote this one with pathologist Michael Tsokos). Bleibtreu is likeable as always but Jasna Fritzi Bauer holds her own. The whole movie is cast pretty well. Fahri Yardim even brings some needed comic relief at times. Because don't get me wrong: This is a good movie but not a lighthearted one.
The look and feel of the movie are elevated and I was pleasantly surprised by the good script. Even though I am german myself the dialogue in german movies can often feel quite wooden and bothers me. "Abgeschnitten" avoids this and many other traps of german filmmaking.
I definitely recommend this one if you are in the mood for a mysterious and creepy Thriller.
Barefoot (2014)
Sweet remake with a lovely Evan Rachel Wood
As a German movie fan I am familiar with Til Schweiger's original 'Barfuss' (2005). But since I always try to keep an open mind I was intrigued to see this remake - and I wasn't disappointed.
'Barefoot' - as an americanized version - tells the story a little bit different and dips more into the romantic (comedy) genre. That's fine by me because a mere copy of Schweiger's film would be pretty redundant. Evan Rachel Wood plays beautifully and portrays an adorable innocence in her role as 'Daisy', the mental patient accompanying Scott Speedman's 'Jay' to his brothers wedding. Their unusual bond is sweet and the movie has more of a light romantic dramedy tone than the original. The colors are warm and the tempo is upbeat but slows down for some nicely done heart-to-heart scenes. I especially loved the setup of certain pivotal scene towards the end.
I can already hear all those serious movie 'critics' moaning about yet another unnecessary remake but that's just it - this remake is not unnecessary. It tells a similar story with a different tone, in a different light, with a different background - transitioning it to a lighter genre. It's not taking anything away from the original - I see it as more of a bonus and really liked it.
Once Upon a Time (2011)
LOVED the pilot!!
I'm a huge fan of all fairy tale-inspired stuff, so I was really looking forward to OUAT and Grimm. Having watched both pilots I have to say this one is the more intriguing and interesting one. I never necessarily liked J.Morrisson that much but the whole concept of the pilot made me forget even that! While Grimm seemed like a nice Supernatural-light sort of thing, OUAT is magical and the characters are great! It switches from dark to light to funny and has a loooot of potential. The LOST (*sigh) writers did not disappoint and created something great with this show. I rarely get excited by a pilot ( and I watch a looooot of shows) but this one definitely has me hooked!! I want Snow White to realize Emma is her daughter and the coma patient is her prince. I want to see the witch getting her ass kicked. I wanna know more about the Sheriff (Could he have been the wolf?). I want them all to realize who they are! I want this show to last happily ever after! Gosh, this is like Disney for grown-ups (Loved the clock-scene in the end). Awesome!!!
Sorority Row (2009)
VERY entertaining horror flick
This movie is one of the most entertaining horror flicks i've seen in a long time.
Style and Story remind of New Classics like 'I know what you did last summer' and 'Scream' but this movie still keeps it's individuality. The dialogue is well written for the genre...some lines are funny, some are just spot on. The female leads act alright, Cassidy is likable, Jessica a real bitch and Ellie...well, she screams a lot, but Rumer Willis did a good job.
There is not that much gore but the whole movie and the killing scenes have a nice pace. And what can I say...I didn't guess the killer!...And that means something ;)
If you liked 'Ikwydls' and 'Scream' back in the days, you should give this movie a shot. It's a million times better than 'Prom Night' and I really enjoyed it!
Jennifer's Body (2009)
Interesting...but could have been better
I think the movie was alright. It definitely had some interesting ideas and Diablo Cody IS a talented writer, even though i didn't like ALL lines (especially the 'tit'-line in the end wasn't as funny as they might have thought it would be). There were some marvellous camera shots...i especially remember the scene were Colin walks into the house and we get a shot of the whole street...it was kind of Freddy Krueger-ish and old-school but still very atmospheric. The music and the pictures showed an artistic side to the film which should not be overlooked. BUT the story itself lacked a bit of depth for me. The plot could have been more complex, adding more information about how something like this could happen and why the band got away with it and it wouldn't have destroyed the rather simple idea of the movie (this might seem like a contradiction, but in my head it isn't). I don't understand why Jennifer didn't want to kill the band because they were the ones who did that to her.
Even though it is supposed to be a horror comedy, the characters could still have been explored a little bit more (i think they did a good job in 'the faculty' for example). In the end, you couldn't really see a character difference between the possessed and the normal Jennifer. The only difference was that she became a killer, but it seemed as if she already was a bitch before and that her character didn't much change even though she was now possessed by a demon.
I don't want to overanalyze this movie. It was entertaining and weird...which isn't necessarily a bad thing...and it had an 'indi'vibe to it because of the way it was told. But it could have been much better.
As for Megan Fox: I'm a girl and i think she's alright.(no hate here, no jealousy because she really IS very pretty) I love the Transformer movies and as a part of these i can deal with her always being the HOT CHICK (even though they tend to overdo her 'sexy scenes'). But I really hope that one day we might see her in a different, more complex role and that will be the day that I can decide if she really is a good actress. She still did a good job here though and Seyfried was alright, too.
If you wanna see a somehow 'different' film that still sticks to the genre of horror comedy, you should check 'Jennifer's Body' out.
The Shortcut (2009)
This movie was disturbing...but not in a good way that horror flicks sometimes are.
I was looking forward to this movie and it started out quite good: An old legend, flashbacks, a possible love triangle, Seeley as a likable lead, etc.
BUT...and this is a pretty big 'but'...the first 65 minutes felt like a detective movie for kids...you know, something you watch on a Sunday afternoon where some kids are spying on a creepy old man.
Even though we get the psycho kid and the dead dog pretty early...that's about it. NOTHING HAPPENS! We see the kids at school, at work and a stupid blonde that plays football like a little princess who is afraid to get dirty..(seriously, they just could have made her a cheerleader, that would have been more believable). There was a whole lot about that girl that didn't even make sense: Why bring up that she wants to go to an Ivy League university and point out that she isn't taken seriously by the headmaster when it isn't further explained to add depth to her character? Why bring up her boyfriend when we never see him? Why put her on the movie poster when her role was so unimportant? They should have put Taylor on there...at least he had more on-screen time. Other than that we don't really know anything about the characters in this movie, there is no development, no emotional depth...nothing!
Well okay, where was I? The plot! From the moment you see psycho kid's brother in one of the flashbacks you know that he is the creepy old man cleaning up the mess behind his deranged little brother. There is no suspense...you just know the whole 'plot twist' after 20 minutes.
And the end, oh my god i don't even know where to start!
As if to make up for all the time nothing happened, suddenly EVERYTHING happens: the kids free psycho-man and he kills them (the two boys literally within seconds!!! They die like some unimportant extras). I mean, maybe it was supposed to be the big finale but that's just not how you build suspense in a horror movie. I actually thought for a while that no one was going to die because everything felt too harmless and than THIS.
Well and than the END...this was next to psycho brother's 'goodbye' speech (3 minutes ago he wanted to shoot the kids and then: "i can't do this anymore...i love you") the most ridiculous part of all: Derek's little brother shows up and is a psycho, too. TADAAA! Once again, you knew this was gonna happen because Lisa was mean to him, the hints about 'trouble at his old school' and the way he played the video game. When they continued the movie with Derek and Lisa walking through the woods, you knew that the new little psycho would show up and kill her for what she had said before. And Derek? He screams "No, Lisa, no!" and then turns into a psycho himself. Just like that...without further explanation. And don't give me that "He wants to protect his little brother crap and he isn't really a bad guy" because he just doesn't care about the fact that the little freak just killed his friend. There is no deeper dramatic side to this. You just have A LOT of psychos.
This movie was disturbing...but not in a good way that horror flicks sometimes are. It doesn't make you think. You rather feel the need to complain because they screwed it up so badly in the end.
I still think it's interesting that Mr.Sandler is now making Horror flicks ...maybe the next one is going to be better! I sure hope so!
Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009)
nice family movie
okay, all the hysteria about hannah montana and miley cyrus might be annoying sometimes but this shouldn't be the reason for rating this movie so low. that's why i rated it 7. people who rate movies without seeing them are seriously jeopardizing IMDb's credibility.
i'm 24 years old, not a hysterical teenager and i like watching all sorts of films, that's why i gave hannah montana a shot and i don't regret it. It's a fun movie with nice music and it does what it's supposed to do: it entertains. the cast is likable, the story doesn't add anything new to the genre, but who cares?
i don't expect any intellectual indie stuff from a Disney flick. it has a nice little morale in the end but it doesn't make you think about the wrongs and rights of the world.
BECAUSE THAT'S NOT WHAT THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT!
'hannah montana: the movie' is a funny and sweet flick and you'll enjoy it if you see it for what it is.
