Fort Tilden (2014)
Lacking
I watched this movie as it was on a "top" 2015 movie list. Boy was watching this a mistake! I'm all for supporting indie films, but this lacked - a story. The main characters are childish and annoying, which quickly alienates the viewer (me). Borish main characters can be offset by interesting supporting characters that the duo meet along their journey, right? Everyone is more interesting than these two, but not enough the lift the movie up to watchable status.
All the other movie departments did a fine job - cinematography, set design, music, and editing. The main actors even "looked good", but they just had nothing of worth to say (script).
The story arc is - two girls who are spoiled, vain, and boring and act that way for 1Hr 25Mins, then a few minutes before the end of the movie they realize they may be spoiled, vain, and boring. The same movie and message could be easily been condensed down to 2-3 minutes.
The Reader (2008)
Funny out takes at the end?
Was it just me, or were other people hoping for some funny out takes at the end of the movie? With all the sex scenes between the boy and Kate Winslet, there had to be some funny moments when shooting? :-)
If someone gave you the "elevator pitch" on the plot of this movie, I think the typical person would roll their eyes (at least a little). I'm giving it six stars because the film was beautifully shot, set, and caste, but the real purpose of the movie was to "build" an Oscar worthy movie. Unfortunately, the endeavor failed miserably.
On the other hand, if I was dating a new girl and hadn't had sex with her yet, I would definitely take her to see this movie! This movie mixes heavy emotions (shallow girls will dig it) with plenty of scenes of a woman having enthusiastic sex! Just the ticket to get your new girlfriends motor purring.. :)
Seven Pounds (2008)
What if Romeo accidentally raped Juliet?
cinematography - check, looked good music - check acting - check, good, had actors you wanted to watch (rosario dawson!) story line/arc - broken!!! pace - slooooooow, easily edit out 30 minutes
If Romeo accidentally raped Juliet, would the love story be successful? I don't think so either (broken story arc). This was a high concept piece that only (out of touch) Hollywood types could love.
Now the story of an IRS agent committing suicide and donating body organs just to pay back society for the evils he's done as an IRS agent .... that's a story the American public could love...that would be art! :) hahah
If he really wanted to punish himself and make a tribute to his wife and others that died, he'd dedicate the rest of his life to helping others .. not just 7 people.
Ending on a positive note, this should be mandatory viewing for current and future IRS agents..hahahha..
Mystic River (2003)
Sean Penn won Oscar? This film blew *ss
Unforgiven is a masterpiece - agreed/true.
This movie does not compare well to an average episode of "law and order". I assume the book was better (I didn't read it), but the characters were superficial and not empathetic. One of the main characters swung from being in a constant state of fog/post traumatic stress to that of being a very lucid defender of himself, then back to the fog state. There was plenty of emotion being displayed by the various characters, but little logic or maturity. Emotion linked with adult situations is powerful and rare in movies (Unforgiven anyone?), but this was like a group of school girls. Morons being emotional is not fun to watch. Plus, one of the main characters turns out to be (multiple) killer with little/no remorse about what he did. Is a multiple killer worse than a child molester? Who'd rather be molested but alive versus dead? A terrible choice for sure, but death is pretty final. Not a masterpiece.
