Hawkeye (2021)
This is what more Marvel stuff should feel like
After watching this show I'm shocked that I hadn't watched it earlier. I'd only heard people calling it mediocre so I hadn't bothered, but this is exactly what I look for in Marvel media (particularly shows). It was light-hearted but not at the expense of the plot's ability to take itself seriously, and the main thing I think makes this show so good is the comparatively low stakes compared to the majority of Marvel (or superhero) content in general. I was dubious about Kate Bishop at first because the rich young girl we were introduced to didn't seem wholly relatable or like the kind of character I could get attached to, but Hailee Steinfeld proved me completely wrong - I hope to see her in more Marvel stuff in the future. As usual, Jeremy Renner was excellent as Clint Barton, who is by far the most interesting Avenger as far as I'm concerned. Finally, I'm always sceptical about sign language in film as it can feel disjointed when paired with other characters who are speaking instead, but I didn't have any of those problems at all - it actually enhanced the narrative imo. 9/10 for superhero content but 8/10 generally.
Superman III (1983)
hm.
I adored the beginning of this film. As a die-hard Smallville fan, you can imagine my delight when I get to see Annette O'Toole as none other than Lana Lang. I think I'll rewatch the first 45 mins or so a thousand times over. However, the wholesome comfort this film provides for a bored teenage Superman fan is about all this film has going for it. I love Pryor to bits, but you can tell he was in it for the money (ironically just like his character). Once the plot got started it dragged the film on a downwards spiral with few saving graces. The scene with Clark in the bar and Jimmy begging for the return of the Superman he knew and loved was sweet, and I liked the fight scene between Clark and Superman a lot. I always find the exploration of Clark and Superman as two sides of the same coin fascinating, and the fight didn't feel too disjointed with was a pleasant surprise. Overall, it's a fun film for a Superman fan with some great moments (less so towards the end) but if you're not particularly fussed about the characters it's not really worth watching.
Superman Returns (2006)
Exactly what I expected.
This film was good. That's about how I feel about it. When Clark saved the space shuttle (and the plane attached to it) and during the whole earthquake situation in Metropolis, Brandon Routh was clearly Superman, and a good one at that. I wish we'd seen more of these kind of scenes, to be honest. Clark's behaviour throughout the film feels bizarre to me. At no point did he seem to even be pretending to be a reporter. On top of that, at no point did Lois seem to be the quick-witted, independent and casually charming character I know her to be. I've never felt someone was so poorly miscast in my life, and it pains me because I'm always prepared to be Lois Lane's biggest fan. Ever. I also wish Jason hadn't turned out to be Clark's kid. Unnecessary and not at all feasible in my mind. I don't think that's a situation either the Clark Kent or the Lois Lane I know would ever end up in. However, despite what feels like horrific mischaracterisation of the two most important characters (imo), this film had some stuff going for it. I've already touched on the action scenes, visually it looks great (for 2006, too) and I was a big fan of Spacey's Luthor, but Parker Posey was completely wasted as Kitty Kowalski. Heinous cliché. Anyway, if you want a good Superman film, watch the 1978 one. If you want good Superman media in general, watch one of the tv shows. If you've seen all that, watch this film and you'll probably feel as apathetic towards it as I do. Good in some places, disappointing in others (but is it disappointing if you were expecting it? That's a question for a Spider-Man film.)
