Freaky Friday (1976)
Surprising...
Having seen the new version of this film, I was expecting this one to be better, as in 'The Parent Trap' and other remade movies, but actually with this I thin the original is better. Although the storyline is crazier, the mother/daughter 'hate' relationship is much more believable in the remake. However, comparisons aside, this is an OK movie, but nothing more. the acting is mediocre and it isn't particularly funny (though this is partly because it's dated.) Another downfall is Jodie Foster. She's a fabulous actress, but she never really comes across as a child. The moral they are trying to tell is not clearly shown, as in other kiddy-type films. A good one for the kids.
Freaky Friday (2003)
Good.Clean.Fun!
A nice little Disney movie to watch with kids (basically because they give you a good excuse to go watch it!) It bobs along merrily with a typical mother and argumentative teenage daughter (maybe slightly overacted, but hey, it's for kids) Jamie Lee Curtis is fantastic, Lindsay Lohan is practically the same as she was in 'The Parent Trap'. There are quite a few laughs (once you've got into a 10-year old's state of mind) and it's an entertaining enough hour & 1/2. Something you can take little kids to and rest assured it's gonna be clean.
Not Another Teen Movie (2001)
Good Stuff.
This is a great film for sleepovers or just staying in, when you can't stand another romantic comedy! It's basically a spoof of loads of teen movies (predictable from the title) and if you've seen them, it's hilarious. If not, it's still funny, making fn out of the utterly predictable lines and stereotyped characters in teen high school. Good, but not to watch over and over. The acting is- well, basic, but the script is fab.
Coyote Ugly (2000)
fab!
This is a great movie with something for everyone- hot girls for the guys, a hot guy and cool girls for us lasses. The whole thing is supported by an excellent soundtrack, which brings it all together brilliantly. It's still one of those overdone, predictable chick flicks with the most basic storyline possible, but for once it's acted well and this makes it very enjoyable, and you can just watch it over and over again.
Never Been Kissed (1999)
Enjoyable nonsense.
Not well acted, not well written, a basic, predictable chick flick. But, like all of them, with a few good songs, a hot guy as the supporting lead, this movie is a bit of fun for a sleepover or cheering you up when you feel depressed. However it's only for girls aged 11-14. After that, everyone 'hates' it (or just doesn't admit to liking it!)
Final Destination (2000)
surprisingly OK
Not a fantastic summary I know, but that's what this movie is. It's good- but only in the genre of teen horror flicks. It's one of the best of that list. I was apprehensive about watching this, having seen a lot of, well, rubbish (e.g The Ring, The Haunting and more recently, Dead End) poured out of the cinema screen and into the eyes of sad gullible teenagers who believe this rubbish is good. But for this film, I was almost one of them. It's not scary in the least (unless you're easily shocked) but it is hilarious. I don't think that was really the point, but it makes for an OK 2 hours or so. The plot is slightly thicker than your average slasher movie, and the parts are fairly well cast.(Lead actor could be cuter though!) All in all, pretty good stuff. 9/10 (vs teen horror movies) or 5.5/10 (against all films.)
Dead End (2003)
Hahaha!!
Well, i posted a message on this film's board asking if it was any good- well, someone could have saved me! It was the most boring, unscary horror movie I have ever seen. There's not even any good gory bits. It might have been 3 hours, it certainly seemed it!
However- good points- it is absolutely hilarious. I didn't stop laughing all the way through- it was just so lame!
There is really nothing more I can say. I'm still speechless from boredom.
If you do go and see this film, take a good supply of chocolate! (It 's way more interesting trying to open wrappers quietly than dying of boredom.)
Finding Nemo (2003)
What were Pixar thinking???
Gorgeous animation- can't fault it. The rest- why? Finding Nemo has a boring plot that darts around so sharply I was lost. The characters are unlikeable and thin, the whole thing is just blah. Watching this, I got the feeling it was just all the animators at Pixar experimenting- seeing what they could do. Frankly, Pixar people- Monsters Inc. was better. And funnier.
Timeline (2003)
Not unbearable...
That is, I didn't walk out! It's a very basic plot, which doesn't go halfway as deep and complex as the book (which is very good) Paul Walker is a bad bad actor (but great eye-candy!!) and Billy Conolly spends the entire film looking around him bemusedly. The acting was good from Anna Friel, but otherwise nothing to shout about. Or talk about. It would have been nice to see some of the real Dordogne featured in the scenery too. A very basic plot, spread very thinly over two hours. 5/10 (Although, if it had been on at 4.30pm on TV, I would have given it 7/10 or 8/10. It would make a very good kids TV show [without the deaths])
The Goodbye Girl (1977)
New romantic comedies haven't got a hope...
If they think they can compete with the likes of The Goodbye Girl. It's definitely the best of it's genre, and I don't know why more people haven't seen it. The acting is superb, the jokes are (mostly) hilarious, however many times you see the film, and I have so many favourite scenes I could probably tell you the whole movie.Richard Dreyfuss is excellent as Elliott, the wet stranger that arrives at Paula's apartment, and Quinn Cummings (Lucy) is a perfect example of a 10 year old girl. For once, it's a film that isn't totally predictable and doesn't end with a kiss!
dinnerladies (1998)
Great! Fab! Hilarious!
I absolutely love this show! It's the highlight of my week, watching it on a Friday night. It has me in hysterics from start to finish. I've heard a lot of people say they don't like it, but I just can't see why. It captures men and women perfectly, and that's REAL men and women, not just stereotypes. The way Tony just gives up when the girls start talking about PMS or blokes, the way Dolly criticises Jean in practically every other sentence, the way Bren and Tony never quite get together and you really want them to, the way Stan won't go in the ladies loo... Hilarious every time! Ok, it hasn't got MUCH staying power, as they talk about mostly current issues, but I hope it goes on for a good long time. I f every comedy was as good as this, the world would be a much happier place. Victoria Wood is a comic genius and totally underrated. She totally understands real people's thoughts and feelings! If only Friends was this good...
Six Days Seven Nights (1998)
Nothing special.
This movie is average. Ok. Mediocre. There's absolutely no reason to go out out and buy it (Well maybe only the fact that Harrison Ford's in it!) If you want to watch something easy on a lazy Sunday afternoon, or you need a film to watch whilst ironing, here it is. David Schwimmer plays his usual stupid, unlikable character, and it's definitely not Ford's best performance. However, there are some funny moments, and good scenery on the beaches and the island, but otherwise fairly predictable and bla.
Jack & Sarah (1995)
Hmmm...
I just can't decide if I like this film or not. Some bits in it are totally sweet or funny or romantic, and others are just plain dull. I cannot warm to Richard E Grant at all. He remains stony faced throughout the whole film, whether he's supposed to be acting happy or sad. However Ian McKellen's performance as the tramp (who is just allowed in the house??) is fantastic, once you've got over the fact that Gandalf's beard is missing!!
Dirty Dancing (1987)
I love this film!
This is my favourite film in the world and I love it! It's got it all- great actors, great songs and great dancing!!! The storyline is fairly predictable but unlike most romantic movies, this one is actually believeable. If you love romantic movies and you haven't seen this- watch it!!! You'll love it.
