Fædre & mødre (2022)
Nobody is likeable
I try to be spoilersless. About halftime my wife gave up, I was hoping that besides showing the current situation something will advance in.the character of anyone. But nope, maybe toward the negative sign. I see it shows this particular part of society, which is done well, but jokes don't land too well (when a scene starts I mostly knew where it will run to), so for me it was not really a comedy. As a starting point it would have been OK, but feels like it had to be quickly closed. Ending is not rushed, just feels meaningless.
If there is nothing else coming up, still watchable, but you can find better choices from Danish cinema (though not comedies recently).
Youth (2015)
Something beautiful in its kind
I saw quite some artsy films recently, I felt this rather art, than trying to be art. In spite of having some expected things, having things which I thought are not needed, this film nicely builds up something until the end, which, if you are receiving it, hits you at the end, and gives something. There are not too many movies emotionally affecting me, this was one of the few.
I don't understand wholly what it meant, but I hope I am getting the edges. Cinematography is indeed great, music is nice, but the story also adds to these things, and all comes together as something additional at the end.
Where'd You Go, Bernadette (2019)
Description is misleading a bit
The disappearance mentioned in the description happens at 2/3 of the film, until than the situation is building up, not very quickly, but also in a fine pace. I started to check if I want to view it, and I stuck watching it. The story is also different, it is not about disappearing someone and finding her in a sense of eg. "Searching", but rather find yourself after you lost yourself.
A bit unbelievable, a bit slow at the beginning, but overall the story is nice and I did not intend to stop after 20-30 mins.
Acting, directing etc. Were good, and ending titles drawing were also nice. I would also visit the Antarctica :).
A Good Person (2023)
Surpisingly taken me with
Based on reviews I was unsure if I would like to see it, butz finally I decided to do so. I didn't regret. The story is not too complicated, not very fast paced, but still, somehow it took me with itself. I have not found scenes not really needed, there were no real extreme scenes (SPOILER taking into consideration that it is about addictions and finding yourself after losing it)..
During the film I found the motives a bit strange, but close to the end all is explained, or an explanation is suggested.
Actors were believable, story built up nicely, I would not call it an eternal masterpiece, but still a job very well done.
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
I felt like I found a gem
I read earlier reviews, that the movie is about poverty, so I was a bit misguided as It is rather about family and values. Near the end it is even spoken. I was surprised, that the protagonist did more or less what I would do, and also characters felt real. I live quite far from the US, but this meant for me something, I felt some connection with it, contrary to several other titles I watched recently, and were about Amerccan life, like Nomadland or. Minari.
The age of the actors is disguiding sometimes, the mother of the main character is much older, than she should be on the basis of the story.
Monos (2019)
Chaotic ending, unbelievable things happening
The movie is actually not bad, it nicely depicts a guerllia war torn country. But there are, at least for me, many annoying decisions and things happening.
I am annoyed by the below, so heavy spoilers from here.
They kill the cow, but then I can't follow why the leader is taking the blame, and kills himself.
The fugitive escapes, runs away, is taken away by a river. It is clear from later, that they can follow tracks, but how do they know how much the river took the fugitive?
At the end the same, Rambo escapes, hides her tracks, but they can quickly find her.
And many more. These things more or less ruined my whole experience.
So if you can overcome such inconsistencies and sometimes dumbness like when the carrier turns his back to the guy who wanted to be free of him, otherwise it is a good movie.
Nebenan (2021)
Somehow wrong story and characters
Reading the positive reviews I expected something better, but the whole situation of the movie is strange in a bad way, the reaction of the protagonist are sometimes believable, sometimes not so much. I know pace can be slow, but in the 2nd quarter it sometimes turns boring, though later catches up. (As an example Drive for me was much longer but I was not bored a second.) Ending also does not give a proper closure,
Motives might be understood, but I feel the resulting actions too much, or sometimes too little. Main characters are not likeable on the basis of what they present during the runtime of the movie, even not to the point (at least for me) to be interested what is happening above a high level interest, which is too small to carry a movie.
Interestingly directing, cinematography and other aspects of the movie were very good, and I did not arrive to the point to stop it. I don't hate it, but also not like it. So if I would have not known about it, I would not be unhappy, but there are much better movies to watch than this one.
Dual (2022)
Unbelievable plot, more unbelievable ending
The start of the movie is already absurd, but in a bad way. People can ahve clones living together with their original until they die. If original does not die, they have to duel to death. Unrealistic, but I hoped something interesting will come out of it.
But the ending was more awkward, during her training the original learns about poisoning, it is very clear, that the clone wants to poison her. But she accepts willingly. The message at the very end is clear, but arriving there was quite painful. I really hate dumb character, especially smart characters acting dumb to make the story moving on.
Scream (2022)
Some good parts, but also dumb characters and many clichés
I stopped watching this at the 2nd part, but I checked this one after the high points and descriptions here. Actually it is not very bad, but it has the parts which I quite hate in many horrors, the invincible villain, who got almost killed at one scene, but nothing is seen from this in an hour happens more than once. Heroes are dumb in many places, though in some places they are quite reasonable.
Overall I liked the referenced "requels" more, than this one. I know many things are references to the original, but while some I liked, some of them were just... boring..
I almost stopped watching it during the following scene (these are heavy spoilers):
- A killer is on the loose. The guy is showering, his mother is coming with a hooting car, but he does not hear it at all. He prepares for dinner, then notices the door is ajar. What a smart guy would do? I think not closing the door and calmly walk away.
- Somebody shot the enemy, and they are leaving. But he goes back to kill it for sure. He is aiming, and his phone is ringing. No, he does not shoot, and then take the phone.
But also as usual, everybody tells the others to not walk alone, and then does it. Though to have some positive, the don't look back scene was quite good, and there were also some other good ones.
Love Map (2021)
Boring and predictable
In spite of the quick cuts between scenes the story is boring and predictable, we know more or less everything at the beginning, and no surprieses are coming. Also nobody feels real. Actors seem to come from a commercial, with limited gestures. Seems like a Hallmark TV movie in their worst efforts.
Dark (2017)
Very good story, with secrets and twists up to the end
So far this is my favourite on Netflix, in the beginning building up the environment, first revealing more and more mysteries, then besides solving them, adding new ones. Continuously new aspects presented, up to the end, with surprises.
Cameramen were quite good, there are excellent composition of pictures in some parts, I was just surprised how cool they look. The short scenes presenting different characters in different times (and worlds) was improved compared to Sense8 where I first saw it. So I like it in almost every aspect.
Pace is not very fast, but I was not bored any time. Having many characters in different times and in the 3rd season different worlds makes it even harder to follow everything, but it is not so hard. I only reverted to a previous part in the last season to be sure who did what.
*** REAL SPOILER FROM HERE ***
Character development (and revealing different aspects of different characters) is quite nicely represented, it is explained, though for me too harsh of a change how Adam and Eva became who they were, once fighting for something positive, then killing the chess pieces without thinking or remorse.
