Layer Cake (2004)
The British Gangster Movie Is Back
The British gangster movie is alive and well in this roller coaster ride of movie. With a cast that shows the best of British acting talent from new kids on the block to long time favourites.
It reminds me of a number of similar movies The Long Good Friday (1980) and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Although Layer Cake falls neatly between the two, less violence than Good Friday slightly subtler humour than Lock, Stock.
The story is well set up in the first ten minutes and then piece by piece the layers get added. This climaxes with a twist and leaves the viewer wanting to see the movie again in order to piece it together from beginning to end.
Well worth seeing.
Thunderbirds (2004)
Thunderbirds used as a hook
This film is just a kids against evil genre. Thunderbirds is just the hook to get people to see it, but are almost incidental in use. The fact that the action takes place on Tracy Island is just a ploy to pull in the public. It was interesting to note what the film makers view of future London will be and how the World all fits together.
The best part of this film are some of the lines delivered by Lady Penelope which are highly comical. These provided some light relief for those expecting a rerun of the TV series.
Having said that it passes 90 or so minutes in a 'fun' way and so may just be worth watching.
Calendar Girls (2003)
Relax and enjoy
Whether this film deserves awards or if it just plays off publicity is uncertain, but what is certain is you can relax and enjoy yourself as the story unwinds and reaches its conclusion. Very funny with an early sad moment.
Gregory's Girl (1980)
Love As A Teenager can be tough
This film is brilliant. It shows the teenager needing to have someone special, but just not knowing how to get that someone special. Especially when everyone else has someone special. A well thought out scene when a younger sibling gives advice.
Lantana (2001)
Drama, with black Aussie humour
This film shows Australia, not as a sunny soap opera land, but life as it happens. There were many twists and turns throughout and showed just how small a community can be. Particularly enjoyed the sharp Aussie wit and black humour that flowed with the unfolding of the plot.
Antony LaPaglia plays a believable role and as sub plot you see his character change in the space of two hours.
All in all a very enjoyable film.
