Gyeongseong Keuricheo (2023)
Decent storyline and picture
Didn't expect much here but was pleasantly surprised the more episodes I wateched. Acting is decent and the story developes at a reasonable clip. The cinematography provided nice visuals and while the 'monster' might appear far fetched, I do give the writers credit for an interesting twist on Japan's occupation of Korea before liberation. There are some sub-plots of survival during of the darkest times in Korea's history so you might have to dig a bit deeper to find some of these underlying messages, but overall, am enjoying it thus far. I gave it a chance and as I headed into this with an open mind, I'm being rewarded.
Deo geullori (2022)
Solid acting and storyline
It has been a while since I've seen a K-Drama and have to admit, this was exceptionally well done. Hye-kyo was incredible and the rest of the supporting cast was flawless.
The story builds nicely and a nice justaposition between the main story and a side love story as well. Insanely beautiful actors and nice use of props as well.
Note: there are definitely some scenese that are hard to watch due to the violence so be forewarned. Still, it is absolutley necessary and I won't call it excessive.
Pretty amazing how quickly 8 episodes flew by. Simply brilliant acting and writing. Can't wait for the rest but an easy 10/10 stars for me.
Midway (2019)
Not a historian...but enjoyed it
Overall enjoyed this film and thought the visuals were quite well done. Don't know much about the specifics of the battles but from the reviews, nice to see that they got a lot of it accurate...always appreciate the details.
Friends with Kids (2011)
Unrealistic but enjoyed anyways..
The storyline is a bit farfetched...but the acting by the main characters was generally good. Enjoyed John Hamm and a key, heated scene at the gathering. Fulfilling ending too. Fortunately I went in not knowing anything about this movie so it topped expectations. I recommend it
Sputnik (2020)
Started promising but...
Really didn't enjoy this...a major letdown. The cinematography was decent but overall, left much to be desired. didn't enjoy the ending and borders on silly. Can't recommend this to anyone...
Myeong-ryang (2014)
Impressive naval battle scenes
I had to do some research but realizing that this was based on real events in the past made it much more enjoyable. Fortunately I was able to see it with subtitles (and not dubbing) and the cinematography and costumes were impressive. Not for those who can't handle gory scenes, but really enjoyed this. Budget was <$20mn but make like $140mn worldwide so a testament to the popularity. I recommend it
Gisaengchung (2019)
Kinda messed up
Didn't expect the ending...which is why I enjoyed it. Shades of the cult classic 'Old Boy' in the sense that there were elements that were so disturbing..
Quantum of Solace (2008)
Less than brilliant
I grew up watching Bond films with my favourite being the uber-charismatic Mr. Moore. Part of the fun was the common thread that included Q, the wild gadgets (rockets from BMWs, lasers from Rolexs, etc.) the wit and humor and womanizing. Definitely a move in a different direction and I find it has lost a lot of its original flavor as it moves more in the direction of the 'Bourne' series. I read that many key directors from the Bourne franchise were hired in the production of QoS and would not surprise me if this were true. I did not enjoy the constant shaking of the camera and the casting for support roles seemed suspect. Not a bad film but less enjoyable than Casino Royal in my opinion..
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Incredible store, cinematography
A truly wonderful film. Refreshing to see women in such powerful, authoritative roles. Breathtaking scenery. Casting job is absolutely superb and action sequences second to none. It looks like I will be adding another dvd to my collection.
Gladiator (2000)
One of my all-time favorites
This is definitely in my top 10. It is slightly longer than the average film but kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire movie. Wonderful cast, flawless directing. Russell has a 'commanding' presence (pardon the pun) and flows effortlessly.
