L'amore primitivo (1964)
Interesting, but ruined by awful comedy
I just watched this film today, and while the scenes where they show "authentic" footage from around the world was interesting to see (if maybe not 100% accurate), the entire film was ruined by the "low-brow" Italian comedians Franco & Ciccio. Franco especially mugged and overacted to a degree that I've never seen before in my entire life; he made Jerry Lewis at his worst look like he was on horse tranquilizers in comparison. Jayne doesn't exactly do a great job of acting herself either. She comes off as her generation's version of Anna Nicole Smith. So, I wouldn't recommend getting the Something Weird DVD this appears on (along with Mondo Balardo) as Balardo isn't worth seeing, and like I said, the painful comedy ruins Primitive Love.
Cannonball Run II (1984)
One of the worst films I've ever seen!
When I watched this film as a little kid when it was on TV, I thought it was pretty bad, and that was when I enjoyed watching stuff like Howard the Duck!
When I finally saw this film again, this time on a VHS tape that was the original release of the movie, I discovered that this was one of the worst films I've ever seen. No kidding.
When you have a great cast like this, and you attach a script that was seemingly written for 8 year olds (or at least those people that think like 8 year olds) with its level of "humor", it is quite sad, especially when I laughed only once... and that was due to the chimp! That's right, the funniest "person" in this movie is the orangutan. Under no circumstances should you ever see this picture.
Beware: Children at Play (1989)
Good idea, bad execution
First off, I have to admit that the story to Beware: Children at Play isn't bad. I mean, some of the plot points are unique, and it's at least nice not to see the same assembly-line horror plot that you'd see in a bigger-budget movie. Yet, the low-budget ultimately ruins the movie. Sure, you'd expect the acting to not be up to par, but in this movie, the thespian work is really bad. It's on the level of skin flicks. Also, the special effects, for the most part, are even worse than what you'd find in a B-movie. It's more like what you'd expect from a recent film-school graduate. As other people have mentioned, the movie does have many boring points. The ending, while nice, isn't good enough to warrant a recommendation on my part. So, I can't say that I'll ask people to see this flick.
The Body Shop (1972)
A dull movie ruined by a poor final reel
I know this movie is a low-budget horror movie intended for those in favor of shocks and "inexpensive" gore, but even considering that, this movie is just too dull, filled with an incoherent plot, along with awful music, and obvious signs that this movie was never finished.
Without giving any spoilers, I'll just say that by the final reel, things are wrapped up with no explantion at all, either by film or narration. The girl Anitra is real attractive, but yet that is not a good enough reason to enjoy this movie.
If you are a fan of those gore movies from the 60's and 70's, then you should watch it, but be warned that it does not even reach to the usual plateau of these kinds of movies.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
Jay and Silent Bob: A vulgar, yet hilarious and smart movie
Before I rented this, the only View Askew movie I'd seen was Clerks, and that was years ago. I was worried that would make this movie less funny than if I'd seen all of the View Askew movies. Luckily, most of the humor in the movie can be understood by anyone. You just need to know basic info, like the main characters, and a main idea or two, in Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma. As everybody has mentioned, this is a very vulgar movie. If you don't like hearing constant vulgarity, then don't watch this movie. But if you enjoy movies like South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, and you remember the fact that the vulgar language isn't much worse than what you and your friends usually say to each other, then you'll find this movie to be hilarious. But, it's not just another movie filled with swearing, like Freddy Got Fingered. Instead, it's a brilliant in-joke of a movie that pays tribute (and parodies) such movies and shows as Land of the Lost, Moonraker, E.T., Good Will Hunting, the Star Wars series (obviously), among many other examples, and filled with countless cameos by well-known faces. The two leads in the movie are hilarious. While Jay gets all of the lines, just watching some of Silent Bob's schtick is great, like the subtle joke in the movie of Bob trying to be a gentleman and helping out some ladies, but having little success (after seeing the movie, you'll know what I mean). The rest of the main actors do an admirable job, and don't "mail in" their performances.
If you are the type who blanches at vulgar language, or are easily offended, then don't watch this movie. But for the rest of us, you'll get to see a great flick that is fun to watch, doesn't take itself too seriously, and is just entertaining. By the way, rent the DVD version, because it is filled with extras, and many deleted and changed scenes.
Soul Survivors (2001)
Soul Survivors: Good idea, bad execution
I first off admit that a horror movie that comes out these days that isn't a slasher flick, and isn't derivative of a previous horror movie, is nice, because I'm sure that most movie fans are tired of basically the same horror movies coming out year after year. That's why Soul Survivors sounded like a good idea, and I was hoping it would be a good movie. However, after watching the movie, I was disappointed that it was boring, confusing, there was no reason to care about what was happening, and overall, it was a good idea that just did not work as a movie. One of the few things that kept me interested in the movie was Eliza Dushku and her cleavage (not to mention her brief scene with one of the characters in the movie that most guys would like). Still, I don't recommend the movie, due to it being unenjoyable to watch.
