Suspiria (1977)
Not bad...
After hearing about this film from so many people and reading the praise it has received from fans of the genre, I took the plunge and bought this movie (after having miserably failed at finding it for rent anywhere).
While I won't say it was a complete waste of money, I'm not sure I'll be watching it again any time soon. For the most part, the film lives up to much of the hype found in other reviews..very atmospheric, strategic use of blood/gore, and at times rather disturbing.
However, the one element that completely ruined it for me was the sound...both the music and the voices. Perhaps the original version (and not the dubbed english one) would provide at better balance, but this version was positively painful at times. The film's music, credited to some geniuses known simply as "The Goblins" is absolutley horrid. Although it works at times, you'll find yourself constantly adjusting the volume to drown out the "artistic" audio. Because of the harsh music, the voice of the actors is usually completely drowned out, making it almost impossible to follow the film's already confusing storyline.
Not a bad film but certainly not the classic some consider it to be.
Desecration (1999)
Extremely unsettling....awesome!
There's something to be said for movies that stick in your mind for weeks..hell, months after first seeing it. Desecration positively scared the crap out of me...but not while watching it. It's only afterwards, when the intensely disturbing images in the film start popping back into your mind. This aspect alone (the incredible atmosphere and imagery)make it nearly impossible to really fault the film on any other level.
Sure, the acting is, for the most part, appalling. And you do find yourself on more than one occasion wondering what the heck you just saw. Even the ending doesn't really work for me. But these are such small complaints.
Blue Velvet (1986)
Not what I wanted - or expected.
Not sure what to say here. I was recently blown away by Lynch's true masterpiece Mulholland Drive. As other reviewers put it, you see it and can't stop thinking about it for weeks. Couldn't be more accurate.
Not so with Blue Velvet. I was looking for a truly complex, intruiging and engaging story - and was extremely disappionted. I've read others' comments and can't begin to understand all of the praise this film has received. After a film like Mulholland Drive, the viewer is left with a fascinating puzzle to unlock. It prompts you to view the film again, think harder, and really consider what Lynch is saying.
Can't say the same is true for Blue Velvet.
