Marple: The Body in the Library (2004)
A darker version of the Miss Marple Stories
I like this new series that ITV are screening at the moment. I didn't know what to expect but having seen first couple of episodes, the first being "The Body in the Library" I am quite impressed.
Though there is a bit of poetic license in some of the plots I have to admit it gives the Miss Marple stories a lot more "OOMPH", I think Agatha Christie would have liked that, for she always hinted of a darker side to human nature in many of her books, and her creation Miss Marple was a ruthless woman in her own right, hiding behind cups of tea, inane chit-chat and lace gloves.
Geraldine McEwen is superb as the devilishly clever Miss Marple, and the sting in the tale in this episode is one that I think Agatha Christie would have loved but never have dared to put in her books when she wrote them all those years ago.
I am looking forward to this series and I hope more of Agatha Christies are given this dark but curiously addictive update by ITV in the future.
Deathwatch (2002)
A good low budget horror movie
I liked this film. It was quirky, had a sting in the tale and had a cast of excellent characters, from a young and innocent Private who tries to understand the horrors of war, a man about to loose his faith in God, a solider who wants to survive the war with the minimum of guilt, a dying teenager, shot in the spine and unaware of the horrors to come and to a psychotic solider who will kill anyone, friend or foe. Add to this a German soldier, played with sinister and frightening conviction by unknown actor, Roman Horak and you have a seat of your pants film that you don't want to watch on your own!
However like many low budget movies, especially those that come of the UK criticism and panning is the name of the game. Now this REALLY gets up my nose! Come on guys, this isn't America you know, we don't have the sort of greenbacks to pay for state of the art special effects in any movie that is British funded. We have to reply on spit, prayers and God's good will.
Deathwatch is damn good movie, scary, spooky, well acted and a cracking good horror film.
If you want something more in the line of special effects galore combined with `pants' acting then go out and buy or rent the mind numbingly stupid, `Freddy and Jason' but don't knock a movie because it doesn't have the budget to give it that glossy overstated Hollywood feel.
This is an intelligent film for intelligent people, if you don't fit into that category, watch something else instead.
Seeta Kalyanam (1976)
Beautifully crafted musical
This 1970s Indian musical tells the story of the life and times of Sita and Rama and their time on earth together in a human incarnation. Rama returns to earth to defeat an evil demon and Sita follows him, immolating herself in fire and vowing revenge against a monster who tried to defile her. Beautifully crafted, with wonderful devotional songs, (the mantra is bone haunting) this film manages to capture the essence of the Hindu philosophy of life, struggle, rebirth and death. The special effects are basic to say the least, in fact by western standards they are laughable, but in the end this is a musical about devotion and love, so the any special effects are a bonus not a necessity. A wonderful film.
Foyle's War (2002)
First Episode, so far, so good
I watched the first episode the other night and I think it is going to be very good. Foyle is a Chief Superintendent in 1940's Hastings. As the war goes on about him, he is forced to deal with the knock on effect of life in War Torn Britain. There is rationing, his superior officer played excellently by Edward Fox is blocking his desire to leave the force and do something useful for the war effort and his only son is about to join the Air-Force. Add to this he hasn't had a Sargent for several months to help with his workload and his new driver, is a Vicar's daughter called Sam played by the delightful Honeysuckle Weeks!
The first episode is titled "The German Woman" and deals with the murder of the German wife of a wealthy village Magistrate. Add to this a good dose of small minded village mentality, (it is war after all and the Germans ARE the enemy), black marketing, draft dodging, corruption in high places and the controversial issues concerning the internment of British based Germans plus some excellent acting from a crackingly good cast and you have the potential for a really good series. And I mean really good! Excellent!
