Thank You for Smoking (2005)
Good Clean Fun
I saw this movie at an LA preview a couple days before its commercial release. I saw the trailers and had wanted to see the movie, so when the preview came available, I jumped at the opportunity. It was everything that I expected, and actually quite a bit more funny than I was expecting. It was an irreverent look at American politics, and the traditional anti-smoking tale. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of political satire, as it is a great example of exactly that. It is by no means preachy, in fact it is exactly the opposite. In addition it's also a tale of family, and how a father copes with living apart from his son and divorced wife. Nick, struggles with trying to be a role model for his son, and balancing his life as a spin artist. In addition, don't discount the early role of Katie Holmes, as the payoff will come at the end of the film.
Catch the Black Sunshine (1974)
So bad it almost killed my friend!
I recieved this movie as a Christmas gift from a friend. We decided that it looked good and had to be watched right away. Little did we know that this movie holds a horrible secret. Much like the fictitious tape in "The Ring", this movie really does have the power to kill, or at least make one very ill. Upon completion of the movie the friend who purchased it became sick, and didn't recover until some two weeks later. As, he is generally a healthy person who rarely gets sick, the only explanation can be that he purchased this movie, only to succomb to its awesome power. So, I warn you, if you buy this movie, watch it at your own risk, and don't say that I didn't warn you.
Can't Hardly Wait (1998)
Guilty Pleasure
This movie for me is one of my guilty pleasures. It should for all intensive purposes be a pretty bad movie, but for some reason it just works. The acting isn't good, and the story isn't particularly innovative or even all that interesting. But when you put everything together this movie is actually quite entertaining.
I think it is sheerly for the fact that we can all identify with so many of the characters in the film. At least all of us who have been through or are in high school. Each of the characters represents someone we know, or at least a conglomeration of stereotypes and people who we may know, or know of. All in all, I would recommend this movie, because for some unknown reason it all works really well.
Le notti del terrore (1981)
This Movie was Great
This movie was a masterpiece in the Zombie Genre. When I saw the movie, it had been pretty hyped up by friends, and let me just say that it lived up to the hype. I think that it is safe to say that these are the most intellectual zombies ever to grace a movie screen. They are not your typical slow moving, bumbling zombies that so many movies resort to. These zombies take no prisoners and plan and scheme to achieve their goals.
Peter Bark, a 25 year old playing a young boy, is somewhat disturbing. There is a strange Oedipal complex thing going on between him and his mother. After watching the movie you will understand what I am talking about. However, that disturbing plot twist only added to the overall movie experience. I would recommend this film to anyone who is a fan of Fulci or Argento films, or any Italian horror films.
