Leave the World Behind (2023)
This should have been a short
Casting is great which leads to Acting is that is top notch. Filled with greatly executed scenes. The story is fascinating. Cinematography is almost always on point. Set design is fitting. Some messages about our society could be read, if interpreted kindly.
However. There is a very active camera. To say the least. The score is an acquired taste to put it mildly. Some character actions are somewhat out there. If you want thoughtful and insightful observations on mankind, humans or relations - look elsewhere.
This film is over two hours long. With content for about 20 minutes. If this were a short film, or maybe a proof of concept, it would be great. But as it stands now it's the longest set up I've ever seen.
And the end is just perfect!
Emily in Paris (2020)
This scene says it all
Season three episode four
Emily is forced to serve at a restaurant due to being fired. After three seasons she still struggles with the French language. So she mixes up champagne with champions in an order. And the one ordering is allergic to champions and is about to die. And then Emily mixes up the emergency phone number 112 with 911. Oh so charming.
And the whole situation is played as charmingly funny. About to die = charmingly funny. Due to the protagonist's charming incompetence. And this is just one example. The same incompetence equals charmingly funny is played out again and again on the show. And again. And again. But she's sooo charming. So everything is fine.
A lot has been said about how American this is. And about the racism. And the you know. But never have I seen an so unlikeable character in a series saved by the most charmingly likeable actresses. Lily Collins saves this series.
The Walking Dead (2010)
Long overstayed the visit an the welcome
I started with the comics and those were good to awesome. And with a great ending. Fitting and just right.
And so were the first seasons; fitting and just right. But then...
By season eight. When you predict every beat. In every episode. Even down to the lines. Down to the beat of the editing.
But still. The effects are great (but not evolving). The acting is on point (but more attitude than emotion). The story moves along (the same plot points). The sum is less than its parts.
As a another knife to the zombie head this story is on repeat. And long tale that has long since over stayed it's welcome.
The Walking Dead has tread many miles from great to meh.
Ancient Apocalypse (2022)
Long drawn conclusions on very vague evidence
As with all pseudo science you mix truths, half truths and guesses based on your own bias.
The story is very well told with build ups and music. He's a great narrator and believable. But much of what is being told is speculation without evidence.
And what bothers me the most is that every "evidence" that is presented points in the same direction - his preconceived idea of how our history has evolved. There is no other, simpler, conclusion.
I would rather see a series with just these amazing places without the speculations.
Well told, but still just a polished version version of Erich von Däniken.
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Twilight Zone
Great production values. Actors, edititing and style were all top notch. But of you have seen a couple of Twilight Zone episodes you could see the "twist" a mile away. The set-up was way better than the payoff.
