Unplanned (2019)
Gut-wrenching and so important
This film was gut-wrenching to watch but beautifully made. It's wasn't gory, but it was definitely realistic in a few scenes. But that's the entire point of the film, I think, to be real. We can't make informed decisions about abortion if we have no idea what it entails, medically speaking, and most of us don't actually have any idea of what it entails. The writers/director did a stellar job of showing the reality of abortion without showing too much, and without being preachy. Anyone on either side of the abortion debate can watch this film and come away knowing more than they did before. Ashley Bratcher was also absolutely fantastic in the lead role.
I Can Only Imagine (2018)
Much better than I expected
After watching the trailer, I wasn't expecting a whole lot. It looked a bit cheesy and the acting didn't look stellar. As a Christian, I went to see the movie anyway. It was fantastic! What a wonderful surprise. It was a beautiful story of forgiveness and redemption that should appeal to people of any faith and to those of no faith at all. We all experience deep hurt in life, and what we do with that hurt can make or break us. This is a story we can all relate to.
America: Imagine the World Without Her (2014)
Yes.
This film is a must watch for all lovers of truth. D'Souza masterfully debunks many classic lies about American history, and does so in an intelligent, methodical, and thoughtful way. The fact that he is an immigrant to America gives him, perhaps, a unique perspective that those of us born and raised Americans don't have. The film is educational, entertaining, visually stunning, and, at times, quite moving.
The Pacific (2010)
Best thing I've ever seen on TV
This series gave me an intimate glimpse into the trials, the struggles, and the greatness of my grandparents' generation. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg must be some sort of match made in Heaven, because everything about this series is magnificent: the cinematography, the musical scores, the script, the characters, and the acting. I believed every minute of it.
Full of Grace (2015)
A remarkable film
This film is visually stunning, with a beautiful soundtrack and powerful acting performances. It continues to haunt me weeks after seeing it. Somehow it manages to portray two larger-than-life historical figures, Peter and Mary, in a way that makes them very human and remarkably current. At the same time it remains true to the saintly nature both surely possessed, and provides insight into the historical struggles of the early church. The film manages to remain non-denominational, such that Christians of any background, and perhaps even spiritually oriented non-Christians, can enjoy it.
By the end of the film I had been moved to tears more than once, I felt I could relate to Mary and Peter in a way I never had before, and I felt closer to Christ, despite his not appearing in the movie at all. A true triumph of independent film making.
