Labyrinth (1986)
David Bowie as the Goblin King! Excellent Film for Family Viewing!
I have always loved this gem of a movie. The perfect choice for a family movie night. If you love adventure, challenges, and oh yes David Bowie this movie is definitely for you.
Labyrinth brings us the story of Sarah, an immature, selfish, and irresponsible sixteen year old girl who is annoyed by her baby brother Toby. One night while babysitting him Sarah wishes for the Goblin King and his goblins to take him away. Next thing she knows her wish has been granted. Now she must solve the Labyrinth within 13 hours before Toby belongs to the Goblin King.
During her adventures throughout the Labyrinth to rescue Toby she meets many new friends, Hoggle, Ludo, and many others as well. She faces many obstacles including eating a peach that puts her in a trance. At one point we witness a dance with the Goblin King, the goblins, and Toby which is cute as hell.
At the end she realizes that although it is ok to have fantasies she needs to grow up and face reality. This is what Jareth, the Goblin King was trying to teaching her all along. In the end he did kind of help her in a way.
Fantastic movie. I'm surprised David Bowie didn't win several awards for his performance as Jareth, the Goblin King.
Sid and Nancy (1986)
Excellent Movie, Although Somewhat Factually Inaccurate!
I love "Sid and Nancy," as it is one of my favorite movies of all time. The acting and direction is great among other things. Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb are brilliant. I give it 10 out of 10 stars either way.
This movie tells the true story of the infamous Punk couple Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Although, it is based on a true story some of it is fictionalized. Sid and Nancy are two troubled and mentally ill young people barely out of their teen years. They meet in London in 1977 at a friend's flat. Sparks don't go off right away. However, as they see each other more and more they fall madly in love. Not liking Nancy and having bad feelings about her the other Sex Pistols as well as many other people cast her out. This even goes so far as banning her from the USA tour. The band later breaks up.
After the breakup of the band Sid tries to launch a solo career and they move to NYC. It is there at their new home in the Chelsea Hotel that Nancy is stabbed to death leading to Sid's arrest. He is later bailed out and dies. They are then reunited.
One thing that I absolutely criticize about this movie is the innacuracy of Nancy's death. It was NOT at all Sid who stabbed her it was a drug dealer. Also, in the bathroom she was not lying spread across the floor, she was sitting up against the toilet and under the sink.
Backdraft (1991)
Excellent Movie!
I have always loved this movie ever since I saw it when I was 6 years old. Great acting, action, storyline and plot, production and costumes. I like Brian better than Steven. He is the better one.
Brian and Steven are two competitive brothers who don't get along. However, when Brian becomes employed in the arson unit they are forced to put aside their differences. Steven is a spoiled brat man child who is estranged from his wife. Meanwhile, Brian is a very mature and kind adult who is responsible and grateful.
Final 24: Sid Vicious (2006)
Sid Vicious!
I love my Sid. He was a very talented person and a sweetheart. The name that he had was a total contradiction of who he really was. He was not Vicious at all. It's an act, it's not who he really was. He was also INNOCENT and he would have been fully acquitted.
Now let's get to the main part of this review, the show itself. I always give anything and everything about Sid and people like him a 10 star rating. However, I do not rate this show as such because It has easily avoidable flaws. Flaws in this show include:
1. Sid was NOT raped, beaten, and abused in Riker's Island. His cellmate was a big butch guy like that John Coffey guy from The Green Mile. The other inmates were afraid of him. The guy loved Sid like he was his own son. He protected him and he warned the other inmates that if they gave Sid a hard time they would have to deal with him. Therefore they left Sid alone.
2. After the suicide attempt Sid stayed at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital for several weeks. He also was not allowed to discharge himself.
3. Eileen Polk was not only a friend of his mother but also his friend too.
4. Sergeant Richard Houseman was not only the one who investigated Sid's death but also Nancy's death. He knew Sid was innocent and he was going to help him get off.
5. Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood bullied and manipulated him into attacking the rock critic with the bike chain.
Although, this is a great show the inaccuracies cannot be ignored. They also never listed the names of the cast members. I would have liked to have found out who plays Sid.
Although, I like it, in the end I would tell the director and writer to do their research and get the facts straight. Overall though, great show.
Why Me? (1984)
Excellent Movie of Courage!
I loved this movie so much that I bought my own DVD of it. It is wonderfully made, acted, written and follows the book really well, (which I have read.) I give it 10 out of 10 stars.
Based on the true story of Lieutenant Leola Mae Harmon, a pregnant army nurse who is about to finish her duty. One morning on her way to work Leola is hit head-on by a drunk driver. Her face hits the windshield and her car falls down the cliff.
This accident severely disfigures her face and she loses her baby. Her husband eventually leaves her because of her face. The driver also gets leniency. She sinks into a deep depression.
But then Dr James Stallings takes an interest in reconstructing her face and gives her back her lips. After 40 additional surgeries she got her looks and face back to normal. They eventually got married.
The Danger of Love: The Carolyn Warmus Story (1992)
Not as Good as the Other Movie but Good!
Although, not as good as the one with Virginia Madsen it is good. Virginia Madsen is just naturally the best choice because she looks a lot like Carolyn Warmus and can do a better acting job. Also, I don't know why they felt the need to change everyone's name except hers. It was a notorious case, the names were already well known.
There were some things that are assumed in this film. For one when Carolyn went into the Solomen (or in this film Carlin household) no one is sure in reality how she got in. In this film she was let in by her victim. It's also not known if Carolyn said anything to her. Although, it is an undisputed fact that the victim called the police.
Overall, a good movie, but I would say to the filmmakers and screenwriters next time stick more closely to the facts and use the real names. 8 out of 10 stars.
