Don't Look Up (2021)
lazy story writing, overall boring movie
Yes, the movie is a fantastic mirror of our dumb social media-driven-information-degenerated society. But it is also so overused and obvious. I've seen this style lately in too many films.
It seems to be fashionable to critique our era without bringing any deeper reflections, emotions or solutions to the table.
This movie just proves that Netflix again opts for knocking out any demands on intelligent content or depth of any kind.
The story line just doesn't hold for the lengthiness, and story writing doesn't really bring us any further anywhere. After 30 minutes you just wish that the earth is going to be wiped out quickly, just so that the movie finally ends.
Great cast though, what a shame to not bring this one home.
How does Netflix do it?
They got a good director, they got a great cast, and they still manage to produce one trash movie after another...
Does Netflix just not aim for better standards (get some great writers for gods sake) or is this a market driven strategy? I really don't get it. They have all the resources they want.
I just felt sorry for the cast somehow.
Tuca & Bertie (2019)
Rick&Morty for Adult Women
At first, I wasn't so excited about starting to watch this show, partly because BoJack was still in my blood and I didn't know what to expect. But I gave it a try, and after the super loud and busy first episode, I am so glad I stayed. It's unique style is fresh, fast and jiggle-to-laugh-out-loud funny, surprising you in each new episode with more emotional depths.
Mr. Robot (2015)
For the Matrix generation grown into their mid-30s
I have to say, Mr Robot thrilled me during season 1 but I also sat many times through parts I wasn't so sure about. Some patches were breathtaking, others too obvious, some scratching on boredom. By the end of season 1 I was even a bit cautious if I should check out season 2. Of course I watched it anyway, and whereas it was a bit of a struggling through the first two, quite slow-paced and patient episodes, from the third one onward it hits a stroke that wasn't there before, more depth and detail, but also more chaos...all dissolved in a beautiful black void, shaken well, and served in a champagne glass with a cherry on its edge. Hats off to Mr Robot second season!
Silicon Valley (2014)
Incredibly well written, perfectly cast, next level comedy
Silicon Valley - a US TV series running on HBO already in its 3rd season. The story is about a start up company founded by a guy named Richard who works with 2 other total nerd programmers, all living together in an "incubator" owned by Erlich who is a total pot head. There are also other peculiar and lovely characters in the series and altogether the writing is not only hilariously fantastic and well thought of, no, every episode ends with a twist that comes as a total new surprise - even for the advanced Silicon Valley watcher - that is the bliss of it - a series so well written and played that you'll always be looking forward to the next episode, forever.
