Oththa Seruppu Size 7 (2019)
A size 15 step in the direction of good cinema
Released in 2019, caught this one on the OTT platform - Netflix late in 2020.
A suspect is brought in to a police station for interrogation in relation to a murder as the police believes they have enough evidence to connect him to the crime. The man is picked by the police while collecting his son, who has a severe muscle dysfunction which can turn life threatening in a few years. He shares a very deep bond with his son and is worried about him.
That the deputy commissioner has come down for the interrogation shows how serious the case is. Though the suspect initially does not explicitly agree to committing the crime, after a little probing from the DC he decides to come clean and admits to the murder.
The DC and other officers, thinking this is an easy closure, asks the suspect to write down his confession to committing the murder. The next few minutes when he submits his confession is the first glimpse we get that this guy may not be as simple as he seems.
As the movie progresses he voluntarily admits to 4 more murders. One of the evidences at all the murders is a single slipper of size 7 (Oththa Seruppu Size 7). Did he actually commit those murders or not? Is this guy a simpleton or a cold blooded criminal mastermind? What lead him to committing those murders and what will happen to him?
Written, directed, produced and acted by R. Parthibhan, the whole movie happens inside an interrogation room with his character as the suspect / murderer - Masilamani in focus. There are no other actors on screen for the entirety of the movie.
The voice actors who play the rest of the cast provide ample support as does the camera work which provides the point of view of other characters and the background score.
Parthibhan's one-man show takes the movie to the next level. That the movie could hold our attention for its 2 hr runtime with just one person on screen says a lot. A bit slow to start, the movie takes you for a ride with twists, turns and revelations
Oththa Seruppu Size 7 is no to be missed by anyone who love a good story and a great performance.
Kilometers and Kilometers (2020)
No No No !!!!
A new movie of an upcoming star of Malayalam movie industry released directly to a satellite channel had raised much expectations. Right from the title to the promos viewers were expecting a road movie. It starts ok. But then gets confused on which direction to move on to and ends up being a mishmash of genres. The lead actor who's had some nice movies hams it up over here. Nice locations, a couple of good songs and a hope that things will turn for the better is what keeps us going along with this poor effort on storytelling. Eventually one ends up realising it is beyond redemption. I watched this on cable network and am not sure if the channel had further edited the movie at their end which turned the movie for the worse. It was the premiere show of the movie released on cable channel and this was my take away.
