The Post (2017)
Underrated masterpiece by Spielberg
God this is a good movie! Much like several films I've seen this year, it's a little hard to follow at times and I have to rewatch it, but still it's just amazing. I had chills for most of the run time, and I got close to crying a good amount. How does Meryl Streep even accomplish what she does in this movie? Like holy moly I didn't know someone could act... just that well. Tom Hanks and Bob Odenkirk are also standout actors, holy cow this movie had a stacked cast. The music and directing fit every scene perfectly, and the acting is nothing short of phenomenal. I really think this movie is super underrated, I haven't heard many people tall about it and i really think it deserves so much more attention, one of Spielberg's best and I do NOT say that lightly. I just can't recommend it enough.
Star Wars: Tales of the Empire (2024)
Pretty solid overall
Kinda hard to describe this is one review but I'll do my best. I did like the backstory for the magistrate, but I didn't love how it was a character who was already in the mandolorian. Kinda felt a bit too much like fan service, but I didn't mind too much. I liked seeing the character develop, and her first episode is the best of her arc. Bariss's arc was probably better in my opinion, though given the atrocities she commits towards the end of the clone wars, I'm not sure how I feel about a redemption arc. I preferred her as a villain but the arc worked fairly well for what it was. She was deadnaming the one inquisitor though, that's not cool. Anyway her redemption felt like it could be a little unearned, but I still enjoyed seeing it happen, and old Bariss still worked for me. Overall solid, definitely one I recommend.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Blown away by how good this was
Jesus this film is so good. Everything made sense by the end, even the little details. I noticed I didn't see verbal hiding, and maybe because he was doing a good job, but also because he wasn't hiding. He was lying to the cop! I was really sad when Benecio Del Toro's character died, since he was my favorite. But man this movies plot is amazing, the action is great, the dialogue and jokes are so good, the characters are fantastic (again even if my favorite one died) and wow that twist. Holy moly. I can't even put it into words it's just so brilliant. Deserves a 10/10 just for that ending, but man the rest of the movie is just as good. I love this movie, probably one of my new favorites. I realized this marks the fifth crime movie l've seen in under a month, the other four being Snatch, The Big Lebowski, The Nice Guys, and Baby Driver. And screw it, Bullet Train too because this movie kinda had a similar plot to Bullet Train. Yeah this movie is just fantastic, I can't recommend enough. I kinda don't know what else to say, it's hard to put into words just how good so much of this movie is.
Snatch (2000)
Really great, surprisingly reminds me of the Big Lebowski
Sometimes the plot is really hard to understand, but after the ending it made enough sense. A few scenes weren't great but for the most part this is a really solid movie. One I highly recommend. I don't know how I film can be so disturbing yet hilarious but this movie does both of those things in amazing ways. Some jokes had me laughing out loud. The Las Vegas cutaways for Franky Four Fingers were hysterical, and zee Germans is an almost as amazing running gag. I can't even comprehend the amount of quotable lines in this movie, definitely one I'll have to rewatch a bit. And somehow, in some way, even though it is as hilarious as it is... the dramatic disturbing points still hit like a punch from Mickey. Not gonna spoil them here but man this movie is good. Brad Pitt as Mickey is BRILLIANT. The opening is confusing and I did have to do a bit of googling because it confused me, but it's still fun and entertaining. Just so many scenes in this movie do exactly what they need to do, not all of them do but I definitely, thoroughly recommend this movie. Weirdly enough it reminds me of the Big Lebowski, in that it's a crime drama that's hard to understand the first time around and hilarious at times. If you like one, I highly recommend watching the other. And if you want something I don't recommend: yeah, don't go to England.
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
Not the best but pretty good, great in some ways
OH GOD THE OPENING WHYYYY. I skipped forward and they were STILL kissing for the love of god why get a room! I'm subtracting points for that alone. I kinda hate seeing characters making out, no matter if they're gay, straight or otherwise. Just not fun to watch. Also, this was my first A24 film believe it or not, though I hope to see Civil War soon. Anyway this movie. I'm semi mixed on it. The directing, acting, and affects are all nothing short of incredible. But there's so many moments of characters saying the dumbest stuff. Some of it feels realistic, like some of their arguing and reacting to death. But other times it just felt so stupid, like really you're bringing THIS up? Is that relevant? Sometimes it really got to the point of feeling unrealistic. The plot is fun but a little dumb, I'm a huge fan of slashers and whodunnits, but in each regard there's better options (Scream does most of what this movie does but better), but it's still well worth watching. I can see why so many people love it and say it's a modern classic in horror. And yeah I can see where they're coming from and agree with a lot of parts of it, but the whole thing is definitely imperfect. But still really good overall, I still recommend. It's super well made, and a lot of plot developments feel realistic and amazingly done, but some of it really isn't great. I still definitely recommend though, because man the good parts are so good! Also side note, they really on used one song for the score. And sometimes it fit the scene perfectly, but other times not so much, so that was also a mixed bag.
Bullet Train (2022)
Surprisingly phenomenal
I wasn't expecting much going in, and I was blown away. Maybe it's my low expectations but this was absolutely phenomenal! Honestly a top 3 film I saw so far this year and maybe a new favorite of mine! I can't really find anything wrong, I'm not kidding. The Carver cameo, the holding out for a hero, all the little details are so good! It's ironic that this movie doesn't take its plot seriously, and a lot of people say it's not good. But because this movie knows what it is and embraces it the plot is amazing. It's a dumb plot but since the movie knows that it doesn't feel like a problem, especially compared to other movies of similar style. Several other movies have generic, even dumb plots that it feels the audience needs to take seriously, and maybe it still works but not as well. This movie has a dumb plot and knows it, saving more time for the good stuff, and ironically making its plot feel much better than some similar movies. It also handles character death so well, like this movie has STAKES. The jokes were all really solid, the action was surprisingly phenomenal, I wasn't expecting much with the characters but I was very pleasantly surprised when so many were so good and so many fantastic moments. The plot was a little confusing for most of it but everything was revealed in one scene, and it didn't feel wrong because of how intentionally dumb this movie is. I don't mind scenes like that anyway, at least when done right. Minority Report and the Knives Out movies do a great job of having a character explain the villains plot to the villain in a really petty yet epic way. This movie has the villain explain their plot, but it gives us answers and again, this movie knows it's dumb so I don't mind. Overall I really don't have any reason not to give this a 10/10, everything was done so well. Definitely really underrated and worth your time, if nothing else it is PERFECT airplane movie (but it's still perfect anyway)
It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)
Nothing amazing but pretty good
Definitely not always fun to watch, if I can be honest a lot of scenes in the first two-thirds could get pretty boring. But man the highs were so good. So many moments were so sweet, powerful, funny and much more. I can't speak too much on this movie's portrayal of depression, that's not something I'm affected by, but a lot of it felt very powerful, to me at least. The cast was all really great, obviously the characters sometimes acted selfishly, but that's to be expected and they did a really good job of being redeemed. The ending was really great, not the best film ending l've seen this year (Baby Driver my beloved) but a really nice way to end out what is ultimately a really good movie. Again not every scene is fun or impactful, but the fun and impactful scenes are truly amazing. Also the beginning was amazing, super well edited and directed. And some other sequences, like the drawings come to life and the Under Pressure sequence. Felt super campy but fit the song, and was a nice break from the most serious parts of the movie. Also that is one of my favorite songs of all time, so I can appreciate that. Also they played a piano rendition of Where is My Mind, which is something I didn't know I needed but I did need. And again the ending, that had some amazing editing. Again the little moments make this movie for me, like when Craig perfectly steps in front of the doctor early on. Very well done, they're super in sync and it looks great. Great choreography. Overall a pretty good film, not one I'll go back to a whole lot but I'd say worth a watch.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MAKE A FUNNY MOVIE LARRY
God this film is absolutely hysterical, so many jokes had me laughing out loud. I think the moments in between the hilarious jokes are a little bit boring, but I definitely have to revisit this film and maybe that won't be a problem anymore. But wow, basically every joke hits. And some of the ones that hit... holy moly they hit like a golf club into a car. The opening is nothing short of amazing, not only super funny but sets the tone and plot of the movie up really well, immediately joking you in. And while the plot of the movie was a little confusing at times, when it actually made sense it was immensely satisfying, and again, the jokes. Wow the jokes. I highly recommend this movie, completely hilarious and so worth a watch, and probably a good amount of rewatched too.
The World's End (2013)
Worst of the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy, obviously still amazing
Definitely the worst of the Cornetto Trilogy, but it's the Cornetto Trilogy so the worst one is still kick ass. I think the more dark and almost depressing tone of this one is really what separates it from the other two. The melancholy feel of the start, and the depressing end. I do like the climax and what it says about human nature, both at its best and at its worst. The action is still good, amazing at times. The jokes still hit hard, and this one's Cornetto reference is my favorite in the trilogy. It is more serious, as I said, however that works I think, and makes for some great darker and more emotional moments. The premise is still fun and lends itself well to some great moments, and the characters were pretty deep and well done. It's still the Cornetto trilogy, it's still great, just the weakest of the three.
Baby Driver (2017)
Edgar Wright's Best
When I tell you this is one of the greatest film climaxes and endings I have ever seen, I mean it. This is a movie that has made me feel every emotion, and so strongly. Anger, joy, fear, sadness, it has made me want to cry from all of them. It is more tense than, ironically, Edgar Wrights actual horror movie parody (as for his actual horror idk, haven't yet seen last night in soho). I honestly think I'll enjoy more on rewatch since most of the time I didn't know everything would be ok. But since it is, I can appreciate every little detail of this masterpiece of a movie. It is Edgar Wright, and that does mean it gets off to slow start, but that also mean when it gets going, it goes like Baby's driving. Phenomenal, so many great moments, a wonderful story, a perfect ending, some unexpected fantastic parkour stuff (reminds me of the parkour videos I used to watch, old me would be happy) and a fantastic score. Absolutely nothing overstays it's welcome, sure most of the characters suck but they're meant to suck, and they don't stay for too long. And I love the two leads so much, as well as a few of the minor characters. Really can't think of anything else to say, nothing I would change and there's too much good to talk about, even if I wanted to spoil it. Definitely one of my new favorites, and possibly my new favorite from Wright. I probably prefer Scott pilgrim because it has just the "Wright" amount of crazy editing and visuals, and in my opinion that's the best part about his movies. The others I've seen don't have as much of that, but are still amazing in their own right and in some ways better. All have a lot of incredible different elements. But this is probably his best overall, and I can definitely see why many consider it his best and their favorite. One of the best movies I saw in recent times, and a new favorite of mine for sure. 10/10. Can't. Recommend. Enough.
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
The second half is definitely better than first in my opinion
I definitely really enjoyed the second half of this movie more than the first. The first is still good, having some amazing and jaw dropping moments, as well as some genuinely horrifying and heartbreaking things. Also a few really oddly funny parts. But outside of the amazingly disturbing parts (and the funny stuff) it was mostly really boring. The second half also had its fair share of bores, but they were a lot less to me. The action and horror of war really made it interesting, and in some ways entertaining, and a huge step up from the first half to me. It's all very good but the second half is definitely better to me.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Holy moly I'm in awe
I have long wondered about what humans were put on this earth to do. What is our purpose why are we here? Today I got my answer. This. Movie. Where do I even begin. This is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. I have a few MINOR problems with it, which I'll get to in my spoiler review I'm doing after this. But still, it's just amazing. I don't think my words can do it justice, but I can try. The action is just amazing, some of the best I've ever seen. The dialogue is MOSTLY incredible. One line feels very robotic at the beginning when Paul is explaining to his mom how they'll beat the emperor. Very much an exposition line. To be honest, that's my biggest flaw. Yeah my biggest actual critique is one line sounds a little off. Crazy. The acting is obviously incredible, as well as the direction holy cow. This movie is visually stunning, and the sound design is phenomenal too. The score is incredible. The sound effects and everything are so good! The editing, the choreography, literally everything that makes a movie a movie is done to a T in this movie! The mature themes that reflect real life so well are so welcome! This movie is just phenomenal in every way, and one of the best I've ever seen, most definitely the best I saw this year.

Spirited (2022)
Could have handled the musical part a little better, good elsewhere
Honestly the fact that this movie is a musical is its biggest flaw because of how it treats the musical formula. The original song in the afterlife or whatever has several characters being confused, and it's implied musicals aren't a thing in the real world. However that is immediately after contracting it by Ryan Reynolds singing a song. I feel that having the most cynical character in the movie sing right after it's addressed that it's odd really clashes. I think having his character refrain from it and having another character sing a villain song while he acts all exasperated would be better. Also later in the movie Will Ferrell sings a song in front of him, and having him make some annoyed remarks would work well. And then at the end of the movie with his redemption and the redemption of the villain song would work, by having him sing for the first time. Granted it still works in the movie I guess, but I think it would be better if they had another character sing it with him using dialogue in between song lines, and then at the end he says and sings those lines but differently and in a good way, as a redemption of the song. As is it still really works, but the way it handled the musical formula felt a little underdone and could have used some work. Other than that it's pretty solid, funny jokes, good characters, and I'm not opposed to the musical format of this movie just that they handled parts of it poorly. But the parts that they handled well, holy cow! Choreography is really great, songs are catchy, and they serve the musical format well. Also there's a callback to Elf. I like that. Overall a solid movie, could be better in some ways but definitely one worth watching, and again even if the musical part of it could be improved, the good musical parts were kinda fantastic.
Andor (2022)
The only whole show I consider perfect.
This is the only tv show I have seen all of that I genuinely consider to be absolutely perfect from start to finish. Our Flag Means Death is close, and I prefer that show, but season 2 was slightly imperfect. That may prove true here I'll do another review when season 2 releases, but right now, I would say almost every minute of Andor is perfect, and if it isn't it's not enough to care. It's one thing to have a 2 hour movie be perfect, two hours you can fit in no flaws. I don't want to diminish the movies I consider perfect, I just want that to enhance how truly amazing this show is that in all of it's current runtime, I never once felt like something was overly unnecessary or bad. To make a perfect season of television is a monumental task in my eyes, and the people who made Andor did it. I can't sing this show's praises enough, every bit of it from the directing to acting to writing to story to score is all so absolutely perfect. I can't recommend it enough, it's just perfect.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Goes down in quality but overall good
Season 3 is definitely the worst, let me clear. But with that being said it's really not as bad as some people say it is. I obviously much prefer the episodic fun of the first two seasons, as those have all my favorite episodes, but even those aren't perfect. The show's action is always incredible, and the world and characters are consistently interesting. It definitely is still a really good show, even if season 3 wasn't great the first two seasons are able to make it one of the best Star Wars shows there is, maybe even beating out the clone wars for me. Even Clone Wars had some dud episodes, so this show being imperfect isn't a surprise. Again season 3 was the worst one, but I don't think it tarnished the show or anything, it's still good and the first two seasons are really great and super worth watching.
The Truman Show (1998)
Somehow charming and terrifying
Truthfully a terrifying concept for a movie. And yet the way that it's executed, with Jim Carrey's eccentric performance and some hilarious jokes make it surprisingly lighthearted, yet still emotional and existential. The way this movie slowly reveals what's going on through jokes and serious beats is so intriguing to watch, and the characters are all so charming and fun, not just Truman himself. The moments of him slowly realizing the truth and seeing what he does are satisfying and fun to watch, yet still are able to carry the same seriousness that most of the movie has. So many parts of the movie make it one of my favorites, not the best movie ever made but certainly a classic and for good reason.
Knives Out (2019)
Just incredible
Absolutely amazing in every regard. Honestly some of the best directing I've seen in the past few years, and an amazing cast that makes it so much fun to watch. The humor is hysterical, but the dramatic parts are equally great. The mystery is so intriguing and, while I won't say much about the plot here to avoid spoilers, i definitely think that the plot is one of the best I've seen as of late. Phenomenal directing, acting, set and sound design and so much more make this easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Easy 10/10, I love everything about it, including the message of hating rich people. Serves the movie well I think. Overall incredible, highly recommend.
Dune (2021)
Phenomenal. Simply phenomenal.
For a while I considered this film to be my absolute favorite. It has certainly gone down in the ranking but only because I realized how good some other movies are. Anyway my love for this movie has not gone down. I haven't read the books so I don't know how it is as an adaptation but as a movie, holy moly. The action is honestly some of the best I have ever seen, and every line leading up to that action is so good and interesting. The buildup to the action made me care so much about the action, and it's simply amazing. The acting, directing, writing and score are all perfect, I wouldn't change anything about this film. This is one of the greatest films ever made in my eyes, and if you can get through a two and and half hour run time (understandable if you can't) it's one I can't recommend enough, it's hard to even put into words how good I find this film. Absolutely recommend.
The Godfather (1972)
Deserves all the praise it gets
What can I say that hasn't been said already? Anyone who praises this film, whether it be the acting, directing, editing, score, or anything else that makes a movie a movie is right. It's so absolutely perfect. It's runtime is really hard to feel when almost every single scene is incredibly interesting, and even if a few aren't it's not an enough to matter in my eyes. The performances are some of the greatest I've seen in a long time, if ever. The writing is so good at conveying exactly what it needs to, and the directing is some of the best ever. The story is nothing short of incredible, and seeing it be brought to life with such impeccable filmmaking is nothing short of incredible. There's a reason this is essential watching, and there's a reason that so many praise this film. They're right. What else can I say, it's the Godfather for crying out loud. Absolutely phenomenal.
12 Angry Men (1957)
So absolutely enthralling
This is one of the most investing and immersive films I have ever witnessed. It is phenomenal how much can be conveyed with 12 men in a single location talking about a single topic. The acting and directing are absolutely phenomenal, and of course the writing is as well. This movie sucks you in with those things and makes you care about the story being told. And the way the story unfolds is so simple yet so absolutely amazing to watch, especially towards the end. One of the best endings I've seen in a film. Everything about this movie is superb, even though given its simple subject and premise it feels as though it shouldn't be. One location, one topic and one of the most compelling watches I've ever seen. I consider this movie essential watching.
Glass Onion (2022)
Knives Out is better but this is amazing
As the title says, Knives Out is better but this is really really great. I love the mystery that's presented and the comedy and action are incredible. Benoit Blanc is still one of the best characters in modern fiction. I would say the original Knives Out is an easy 10/10, and this one might also be a 10, but for now I'm happy calling it a 9. Again it's not as good as Knives Out, but wow is it still amazing in many ways. The directing and editing are still incredible, the acting is still phenomenal even with a different cast, and the message against rich people still hits hard. I can see why some people prefer this to Knives Out, because wow is it great, nearly as good in my eyes. Easy recommendation.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Not Perfect but Worth a Watch
Pretty solid overall. I remember getting an ad for this in the middle of a YouTube video years back and I saw the whole thing. I figured l'd watch it it was easily available and when I saw it was leaving Netflix I figured l'd finally give it a shot. Definitely a good choice. Obviously it isn't perfect, and at several points it felt kinda boring but definitely not bad. The highs are a lot of fun and I even found myself getting a little emotional at times. Definitely more character driven than action driven, but the characters are pretty good and the action that is there is great. Not the best movie ever made, and probably not one l'll go back to a whole lot, but I could definitely see myself revisiting this. The monsters are actually kinda incredible looking, i don't know how much of the effects were practical and how much were digital but either way they look great. Solid enough movie, not perfect but I recommend.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
More than just fun zombie shenanigans
I really like how this movie felt realistic. I think it's accurate to a zombie apocalypse because of how the characters treat each other and especially the zombies at the end. I don't know if it's accurate, hopefully not never will but it definitely feels realistic. The characters are also fairly three dimensional. Shaun is not completely perfect, he has several moments of being unlikeable. And David, the big jerk of the movie, actually raises some good points at times. And plenty of the other characters make stupid decisions. It feels so relatable. I also love how many things come back. Much like Hot Fuzz, almost everything said in the beginning comes back in some way. Edgar Wright likes to use Chekhov's Gun more than he likes his characters to use real guns, which is saying a lot. It's a really well written and directed movie, with some absolutely incredible scenes. There is a lot of gory zombie fun, but there's more to it than just that. There's character moments and great humor and some amazing filmmaking. Overall I highly recommend, some scenes were kinda bad or unfun to watch and the beginning and ending don't do a lot for me, but wow the good parts are nothing short of incredible.
