Praying for Armageddon (2023)
A powerful insight into a persistent crisis
This film, besides lifting the lid on some truly hair-raising aspects of modern American politics, also provides an alarming insight into why there is such a catastrophe unfolding in Israel/Palestine, most especially, at the time of writing, in Gaza, which is enduring truly unimaginable levels of grief, pain and death -all of which would be enthusiastically welcomed by the Armageddon fanatics in the USA. The United States, as presented here, already a deeply religious nation, stands on the the threshold of becoming a fully fledged theocracy, which, unlike Iran or Saudi Arabia, possess the power to unleash truly biblical levels of destruction - Armageddon indeed.
I would strongly recommend watching this film in order to gain a deeper understanding of an unfolding tragedy, far beyond the banal platitudes we are normally served in the media.
65 (2023)
Mind-numbingly awful
If this had been written by seven year olds and directed bt nine year-olds pitching for an audience of credulous five year olds you'd say this was a pretty good effort, but for the rest of us this is a truly terrible film, best watched in fast forward.
Given that it stars Adm Driver, a very good actor, and the fact that I love good sci-fi I was looking forward to watching 65. But what actually turned up what a slow motion parade of extraordinarily prosaic cliches, toe-curling sentimentality and a tediously predictable plot. Utterly pointless with no nuance, subtlety or indeed any artistic merit whatsoever.
The opening 'cosmic sky ride' scenes enlivened the opening of the film, but the moment the story actually began it was down, down, down.
I beg you, spare yourself - spend the time doing the dishes or walking the dog or just gazing out the window, but don't throw away 90 minutes of your life. Actually, that's one good thing in this sorry apology of the film, it is mercifully short.
OK Driver, put that firmly in the past, 65 million years will do (spoiler, they even had the nerve to spell that out for you just in case you didn't get it, dooh!) and go make some good films, please.
