The Best Man (2005)
Quirky modernization of Midsummer Night's Dream and Cyrano de Bergerac
I recently picked up the movie at the videostore with nearly no expectations whatsoever. I had never heard of the film, but was in the mood for some romantic-comedy fluff. As I fired up my DVD-player, I prepared myself for the worst. Instead I was pleasantly surprised with an entertaining amusing take on Midsummer Night's Dream and Cyrano de Bergerac.
The quirky humour is introduced straight from the start of the movie and continues all the way through, with all the wonderful twists and turns you expect from Midsummer's, starring the very charming and handsome Stuart Townsend as the Cyrano figure.
The performances ranged from decent to good, with Stuart Townsend and Seth Green being the only two who seemed to actually work on their performances. (Has Amy Smart ever played something other than the pretty girl?) As it's based on these two extremely well-known stories the plot is very familiar, but I found that this didn't take away from my enjoyment of the film at all.
I very much recommend this film to anyone who enjoys romantic comedies, or would like to see new interpretations of the classic stories.
Say Anything... (1989)
Painful
I barely made it through this film. After reading such a great review of it, I was expecting something decent if not great.
Instead I found it to be one of those films that feels like it goes on forever. I didn't feel anything for the characters, good or bad, there was no chemistry between the love interests.
There is only a very general plot, but you sit there asking yourself "what on earth has happened in the last 2 hours? Nothing." It simply misses the mark at every opportunity.
Save yourself from two hours of monotony and misery and pick something else to watch.
SeaChange (1998)
Very funny...
SeaChange is one of my favourite programs. I live in Canada, and although I heard a rumour that it's on Digital Cable, it's not on regular cable, so I don't see it. My friend owns most of the videos, and we watch them on her international video player, unfortunately I can't borrow them since mine only plays vhs. Brilliant show, keeps me laughing at things for an hour. It's a shame Diver Dan left the show, since he was a wonderful addition to the cast. I can't wait to see more.
