Más ¡vampiros en La Habana! (2003)
Timeless classic
Más ¡vampiros en La Habana! Is a hilarious sequel to the 1985 cult classic Vampires in Havana, which follows the adventures of Pepito, a young Cuban vampire who invents a magical drink that allows vampires to survive in the sun. In this film, Pepito's son Pepín, a gifted child, creates a new and more powerful drink that attracts the attention of various factions of vampires, mobsters, spies and Nazis who want to use it for their own purposes. Pepito has to save his son, his marriage and his club from the chaos that ensues, while also dealing with the return of his old nemesis, Von Dracula.
The film is a brilliant satire of Cuban history and politics, as well as a parody of various genres and tropes of cinema. The humor is witty and absurd, but also very specific to the Cuban culture and context, so some jokes might be lost on non-Cuban audiences. However, the film also has a universal appeal, as it explores themes such as family, friendship, love, identity and freedom. The animation is colorful and expressive, and the voice acting is superb, featuring some of the most popular actors and musicians in Cuba. The music is also a highlight, with catchy songs such as "El Führer tiene la llave" and "Thriller Tropical".
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Its all about the message...
I gave this movie an 8/10 because I was hooked by the suspenseful plot and the excellent performances of the cast. The movie keeps you at the edge of your seat all the time, as you wonder what is happening and what will happen next. But most importantly the movie also delivers an important message about the need for solidarity and compassion in uncertain times, as the characters face a real world threat and not some zombies apocalypse. The movie shows how fear and paranoia can drive people apart, but also how love and empathy can bring them together.
I found the ending good because it wrapped up the story in the only way I thought possible in a 2 hour movie, despite most people agreeing that the ending was bad. I think this should be a show and not a movie, but I think the movie did a good job of completing all the character arcs and dealing with the complex character dynamics. I liked how Rosie, the youngest child, finds the bunker in the basement, which implies that all the characters will be fine. The ending also leaves some room for interpretation and speculation, which I think is fitting for a movie like this.
