We Are Not Alone (2022)
Best thing on TV for years
From the trailers I didn't think this would be very good, as it looked a bit forced, but I thought I would give it a go. I am so glad I did as I ended up really enjoying it. The pacing is good, the story keeps you interested and you really do care about what happens to the characters. It's not laugh out loud comedy all the time but the house party scene could become a classic.
It's not for everyone as my wife didn't finish watching it, but if you like Sean of the Dead or Red Dwarf then definitely check this one out. Hopefully it will be the start of a series as it certainly leaves the door open for that.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Not Tolkien!
I wanted to give it a go, but it is really poor, I am struggling to complete the first episode. The people who made this have forgotten what makes Tolkien so special and that is the depth of his world building. You know that behind every main character that Tolkien mentions in his writings there is likely to be a full mythology. This feels shallow in comparison with very little link to Tolkien.
As others have said the depiction of the elves feels all wrong. These would have been High Elves in their full glory, they seem to be just humans with pointy ears in this. Also, there is the painfully predictable forbidden "love story" between an Elf and a Human, and there is even mention that unions between the races end in death and tragedy. Have they forgotten Elrond is half elven??!!
Someone said in another review that any Tolkien fan would love this and that it is Jackson fans that wouldn't. I can't disagree more! Jackson did a good job with TLOTR, but fell into the same trap of making too much up for the Hobbit. This is almost all made up because it is not based on the Silmarillion or the Lost Tales, because they licensed the Appendices of TLOTR only which is basically a lot of names and lineage.
This is not Tolkien, this is fan fiction, and it's not very good sadly.
Men in Black: International (2019)
Just a bit of fun
If you like MIB and don't have any high expectations for a deep and meaningful plot then this film is a good watch for all the family.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Not as good as I expected
There has been a lot of hype about The Handmaid's Tale, particularly how good but depressing it is. Maybe my expectations were too high, but it was just too slow! Not much happens and the whole premise is rather weak. There is very little background as to how the USA became the dystopian society depicted.
Doing it in chronological order would probably have helped instead of trendy flashbacks.
I made it to 4 episodes and the content would have made a good 1st episode, as it is I can't be bothered to see anymore, particularly as most of the reviews say Season 1 is the best.
The Goes Wrong Show (2019)
Laugh out loud funny
This really is a gem of a program. Silly and stupid but also very very hard to do. Finally a comedy program that can be watched by all the family. We did from 15 to 86, Brilliant.
300: Rise of an Empire (2014)
Boring
I was looking for something to watch and thought I would give this a go. I wasn't a fan of the first 300 film, so my expectations were low, but not that low.
Can't really think of a good thing to say about this film. The violence was gratuitous, (and so was the sex scene). The cgi blood was laughable and there was so much of it, but none of it ever seemed to touch the fighters who stayed remarkably clean.
No historical accuracy at all, so it was all just silly. In the end it was just on in the background while I looked on IMDb at other reviews and Wikipedia to find out the real story!
The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007)
Pleasantly surprised!
I had never heard of this film or the books, and accidentally stumbled upon it after my daughter finished watching something else. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The characters are interesting, the story is original and the special effects are great. I found it had a really different atmosphere to it than many other fantasy films and you never quite knew what was going to happen next. It also moved along at a good pace so no chance of getting bored.
So, I was surprised to see how bad a lot of the reviews were, but it appears that if you are a fan of the books then you will be incredibly disappointed, but if, like me, you have absolutely no preconceptions or expectations then you might just like it a lot!
