Our Flag Means Death: The Curse of the Seafaring Life (2023)
I enjoyed this with all my heart
I AM STILL SCREAMING!!!!! I think I watched every scene between Ed and Stede twice.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
My fav moments except from the big one:
1. BLACKBEARDS COLLAR AND WHY DOES HE STILL LOOK SO HOT IN A POTATO SACK IT'S UNFAIR
2. Stede in his sassy outfit absolutely slaying.
3. Izzy getting into his element again, I loved that for him and Con is such an amazing actor.
4. Stede actually being competent at the second raid
5. The lovely talk it through moment between Fang and Ed.
6. Lucius working through his trauma and then PROPOSING TO PETE I AM SO EXCITED
And finally, of course, ohhhhhhhmyLORD CONGRATS CREW ON THE SECOND CANON KISS IN THIS SERIES!!!! WE MADE IT!!!! AND WHAT A KISS IT WAS
I saw the moon in the background and I was already screeching because in that moment I KNEW they were gonna kiss. And then cutely holding hands afterwards and taking it slow, I just know that Stede is gonna woo Edward so hard and I am nothing but excited to see it.
Our Flag Means Death: Fun and Games (2023)
beautiful continuation, great performances all round
I was so giddy this morning, getting up to see the two new episodes of my favourite show. Sitting there with my breakfast on the couch, I already had to put it aside because I just got too excited to eat. I am so far gone for this show. I absolutely LOVED to see Anne Bonny and Mary Reed since I have been dying to see them on the show ever since there were rumours. And what performances Rachel House and Minnie Driver gave!!! I hope we'll see them again (since they're taking on the pirate's life again?).
The way Ed slowly softens up to Stede again, first lying upset under a blanky on the couch like the babygirl he is, and then Stede sAYING I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU TO HIS FACE AND THE WAY HE SMILES SOFTLY AT HIM FOR THE FIRST TIME AGAINNNNN
Also Buttons was so good this season, I will miss him so much but I respect his choices.
Our Flag Means Death: The Innkeeper (2023)
My heart is warm, amazing season so far
I just finished watching this episode and I still have tears in my eyes. What a BEAUTIFUL use of 'this woman's work' by Kate Bush. Ed choosing life after all. Both Stede and Ed working through their own problems of thinking they're not worth it to be loved.
I was shocked for one moment, because I thought sorcery would become a thing after hornigold suddenly didn't die, but luckily it was just a kind of vision.
I'm glad the series hasn't suddenly only become a drama though, because there's still so much humour in it. I love Ed playing an innkeeper (please let S3 be about Ed's struggles to set up a bar and grill)
And even during the emotional moment of Blackbeard drowning and Stede pulling him out of it ("I'll never leave") Stede coming to him in MERMAID FORM, this is some fanfiction type of shi and I am so here for it. Thank you all the crew that made this wonderful show. I love you all and so far the series not only not disappointed, but it went above and beyond my already high expectations.
Our Flag Means Death: Discomfort in a Married State (2022)
you're a lunatic and I like it
Episode three of 'Our Flag Means Death' is an absolute whopper, filled with standout moments that leave you wanting more. Taika Waititi's entrance as Blackbeard is amazing. He acts with charisma and intrigue, instantly captivating the audience.
The dynamic between Rhys Darby's Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi's Blackbeard is the heart of the episode. Their comedic chemistry is off the charts, making every scene they share a pure delight to watch. The mentorship that is evolving between these two characters adds depth and emotion to the series, elevating it beyond mere slapstick humor.
One of the episode's highlights for me is the clothes swap between Blackbeard and Stede. The absurdity of the situation, combined with the impeccable comedic improvisation between the two, results in uproarious laughter. It's moments like these that make 'Our Flag Means Death' a standout in the comedy genre.
Our Flag Means Death: A Gentleman Pirate (2022)
The cream of the carribean
Episode three of 'Our Flag Means Death' is a thrilling ride that continues to captivate and entertain. The standout, of course, is Taika Waititi's enigmatic portrayal of Blackbeard, which is nothing short of magnetic. Waititi's charisma and unpredictability as the infamous pirate captain elevate the show to another level, and it has me in a chokehold.
I love Leslie Jones as Spanish Jackie, adding to the list of amazing characters this series has.
The episode continues to build on the endearing camaraderie among the crew members, making you feel even more invested in their adventures. The character development is nuanced and engaging, adding layers of depth to each character.
As with previous episodes, the production values remain impeccable. The stunning cinematography, and authentic costumes transport you to the 18th-century pirate world, enhancing the overall experience.
'Our Flag Means Death' episode three keeps the excitement alive and leaves you eagerly anticipating what's next for this lovable crew of misfits. With Rhys Darby's hilarious "Hi all!" performance, clever writing, and the perfect blend of humor and heart, this series continues to be an absolute treasure trove of entertainment. Don't miss out on this swashbuckling adventure guys!
Our Flag Means Death: A Damned Man (2022)
A damned good episode
'A damned man' keeps the pirate adventure sailing smoothly, delivering another dose of heartwarming moments. This series continues to impress with its blend of wit, charm, and eccentric characters.
Rhys Darby's portrayal of Stede Bonnet continues to shine as he navigates the rough seas of piracy with delightful ineptitude. His interactions with the crew, especially the enigmatic Blackbeard (played by Taika Waititi), are nothing short of comedic gold. Waititi's charismatic and unpredictable performance as the infamous pirate captain adds a layer of complexity to the series.
The character development in this episode is noteworthy, as we get to know the quirky crew members on a deeper level. Each member has their quirks and backstories, making them endearing and relatable in their own right.
There's clever one-liners and absurd situations that will have you laughing out loud. Yet, underneath the humor lies a message of friendship and self-discovery, which gives the show a surprising depth.
As the story unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that this pirate adventure isn't just about the quest for treasure but the journey of self-discovery and the bonds formed on the high seas.
If you enjoyed the first episode, you'll be thrilled with the direction this series is heading.
Our Flag Means Death: Pilot (2022)
so funny and heartfelt
Episode one is a bit different from the rest of the series, but already so enjoyable. From the moment it begins, you're immediately drawn into the quirky world of pirate shenanigans, thanks to its clever writing (thank you Alex Sherman and David Jenkins) and fantastic character development.
The show introduces us to Stede Bonnet, brilliantly portrayed by Rhys Darby, a wealthy landowner who takes an unexpected plunge into the world of piracy. Darby's comedic timing is impeccable, and his transformation from a bumbling aristocrat to an endearing pirate captain is a delight to watch.
The supporting cast, including Taika Waititi as the infamous Blackbeard, brings their A-game, adding layers of hilarity and depth to the story. The dynamics between the crew members, each with their unique quirks and personalities, promise to be a constant source of entertainment.
The cinematography is stunning, capturing the essence of the pirate era with breathtaking visuals. The costumes and set designs are also top-notch, immersing viewers in the 18th-century Caribbean.
What truly sets this series apart is its clever blend of humor and heart. Amidst the comedic chaos, there are moments of genuine emotion and camaraderie that tug at your heartstrings.
'Our Flag Means Death' is a refreshing and highly enjoyable addition to the pirate genre, offering a unique take on a well-trodden path. With its charming characters, witty humor, and an adventurous spirit, this series promises to be an exhilarating journey worth every minute of your time. Don't miss the boat on this one!
Our Flag Means Death: The Best Revenge Is Dressing Well (2022)
it's getting even better somehow
This episode gave us Jeff the Accountant and the most bottom pout Ed has ever pouted and it's beautiful. I also loved Joel Fry (as Frenchie) and Samson Kayo (as Oluwande) in this. As I said in my overall review, all the characters in the crew are lovable.'
Stede burning down a ship because people made fun of Ed????
YOU WEAR FINE THINGS WELL???????
I can never get over you wear fine things well. It's the cutest scene in the series as far as I'm concerned
The usage of the colour purple as a theme for the love between Ed and Stede fills my heart with joy (and has made my favourite colour purple, maybe...)
Our Flag Means Death: Wherever You Go, There You Are (2022)
the babygirl episode
Thank you to this episode for giving us babygirl blackbeard, truly the man who babygirled so hard he outbabygirled everyone. This episode left me screaming and watching our flag means death again and again (I have watched it..... 14 times now... ahem).
I am so excited about season 2. Not nervous at all, because I know all the actors, writers and producers have so much love and care for this queer love story. I know it's in good hands.
Also after seeing the trailer for s2 I am SCREAMING I didn't know that Blackbeard could babygirl even harder but here we are. I'm not gonna survive this truly.
Our Flag Means Death (2022)
My favourite show (please make a season 3)
Edit january '24: this show still means so much to me. It made me celebrate my queerness. It made me find a community. Comfort me when I'm sad. Made me happier when I was already happy. It even made me better understand myself. To say I was heartbroken to hear there won't be a season 3 is an understatement. My comfort has been swept away. Thousands of queer people left disappointed that their safe space is discontinued. How could you hbomax. Can't queer people have one comfort show that is unashamedly queer? Please, please make a season 3.
I could never have known what this show had in store for me. There's truly no show that can live up to Our Flag Means Death. Ultimately it's a story about belonging somewhere. I have come to love all the characters in this show, even the side characters have their own backgrounds and quirks.
In addition, I have never seen a character as hot as Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), it has consumed my life.
I have met amazing fellow fans and now friends due to this show, I am so glad this amazing, beautiful, very queer show exists. My life truly wouldn't have been the same without it. I'm even prouder to be queer.
