Saltburn (2023)
In one word? Masterful
What a ride. From beginning to end, this is an experience of visual beauty: the cinematography is exquisite, with each frame carefully thought out and masterfully put together. It is a joyful feast for the eyes.
The film itself starts off slow, and the first 53min could have been done in 25 without any true loss. But making it through that is well worth it: the moment we arrive at Saltburn, the ride really begins. It's suspenseful and lightly creepy and sexy and twisted, in the way great southern gothic and vintage vampire movies are. The cast is stellar, and it will be a highway robbery if this film doesn't attract multiple Oscar nominations - and wins.
Under the moonlight, one of the best and bloodiest sex scenes of recent years occurs, against a backdrop of what can only be described as Parasite for white people. The English aristocracy is shown as the villain it truly is: embarrassingly wealthy, vapid white people gorging off intergenerational riches they have no right to have, spent frivolously instead of on the therapy that is truly needed.
My favourite film of this year.

Heartwarming Christmas Joy
A charming film full of Christmas spirit and laugh-out-loud moments. It's always a bit hard to tell if a Melissa McCarthy flick will be excellent or dull, but this one's a winner.
It's funny, lighthearted, heartwarming, and oozes charm, and she dazzles in the way that only she can. Definitely my favourite Christmas movie of 2023.
The plot is silly and fun in all the right ways, with just the right amount of sappiness to make you tear up. It's a bit different to your average rom com, in all the right ways.
I do wish the marriage had more spark, but it's a small part of the overall movie and the other parts more than make up for it. A lovely ride! I wish more Christmas flicks were like it.

Moving masterpiece worth superb cinematography and incredible cast
In one word: WOW. What a show. Everything from the story and characters to the music and atmosphere are simply spectacular. This is the kind of quality that rarely comes along, and I hope it wins dozens of awards. The show is moving, gritty, poignant, and searing in its commentary on modern life for Roma communities. Zofia is breathtaking, and supported by a fantastic ensemble cast.
The cinematography is atmospheric, beautiful, and oftentimes magical. The writing is sharp, powerful, and moves the story along with intensity and heart. It doesn't shy away from the racism and brutality Roma people face daily, yet balances this heaviness with beautiful moments of connection and joy.
The actors are all fantastic. The music is touchingly haunting. I don't have enough words of praise to heap on this series. GO. WATCH IT. It's easily one of the top 3 things Netflix has put out this year. I literally signed up to IMDb just to be able to review it - it's that good.
