Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Highly overrated, poorly executed decent ideas
The idea in itself makes for a good premise and it actually starts off exceptionally well, with a very authentic feel, instantly grabbing your attention. Yet not too much later, we're getting aware this is actually a slow burn movie. No problem to me, but then why present it the other way around?
There are a lot of these quirky things going on here that are simply hard to justify.. when you're going for this '80s vibe, why use overly modern cameras? Why not go for that more gritty feel of , for example, Tarantinos camerawork, it just breathes that earlier age.. ( where's them cigarette burns? ) To add to that, the actors are playing their roles much too modern, especially the show host was completely unbelievable in that respect. This is simply not how they talked or how their mannerisms were back then.
Some characters that are fun at first, but quickly overstay their welcome, like Lily, and the Illusionist/scientist - heavily based on James Randi - didn't help much either and felt like they had no true depth to their roles, while their arc was completely drawn out from the first second of appearance.
I could go on, but long story short, I really don't get the hype and feel this could have been a pretty easy 8 or 9 with the right execution.
King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch (2023)
The worst of the worst
Made this account to place this review. In my opinion this is everything that's wrong with current TV and I'm thoroughly stunned this has anything higher than a 3/10 average. One must be very, very gullible to interpret this as "reality' TV - yes I know, 90% of reality TV is somewhat staged/guided along the desired route. Yet this programme takes it that much further; I've put in my years hunting little gems and this is simply not how it works.... at all.
Every mild disappointment is countered with the find of a lifetime. Always with the pros or just anyone affiliated with any part of the item's history right there when it's found. Conveniently, these showstopping items are found in places where 98/100 customers would have also noticed them and bought them. I could go on but any second spent on this idiocracy is one too many. If I'd like to see better acting I'd honestly rather watch MMA fight intros, and for better storywriting I'd rather watch the teletubbies. What a joke, the world is broken for this to even air, let alone get such high ratings..
Oh and when you stage everything anyway, maybe also take some items that are not in the sports field, as there's a vast supply of history/topics to choose from.. oh wait they don't sponsor your *%××!#@
