King Kong (1933)
Still the Greatest Kong of all!!!
In 1933 RKO released 'King Kong' the First cinema feature in which the Title Character was not a Living Being!
King Kong's greatest hero was Willis O'Brien. He created the on screen character and imbued him with life and real character. Other Kongs would always remain second rate when compared to O'Brien's King Kong.
When watching the original King Kong the viewer knew when Kong was angry, sad, amused, curious or, when with Anne Darow, flirtatious. O'Brien imbued Kong with real human emotions which jumped off the screen to let the viewer know what Kong was feeling during any particular scene. This would have been quite a feat for someone in make up the likes of that created by John Chambers for 'Planet of the Apes'. But, when one takes in to account that King Kong was Stop Motion Animated this feat becomes Gargantuan.
The somewhat Lack Luster 2005 Peter Jackson effort, with possibly the Greatest miscasting of Jack Black as Carl Denholm, misfired dramatically because Kong was not imbued with the type of emotional expressions that O'Brien took the effort to put into his Kong. For Jackson this was an opportunity lost for a film that Should have at least been as good if not better than the original given the technological superiority of the time.
The original King Kong in all its' Black and White Glory will remain the benchmark for which all other King Kongs are measured.
I urge anyone even remotely interested in cinema to watch this 'King Kong' for a Real lesson in Reel cinema!!
Erinnerungen an die Zukunft (1970)
Still a brilliant film. A very disappointing DVD.
As a teenager I first saw this film at the cinema and loved it. It made me think not only are we not alone in the universe but also are we the first in the universe? I also fell in love with Peter Thomas' music score. I recently purchased the DVD and was totally appalled with the quality. It looked as if it was duplicated from the worst possible print that could be found. The soundtrack had more snaps, crackles and pops than a bowl of breakfast cereal. Although completely disappointed with the DVD I kept it as an example of the disrespect that some in the industry have for the product that they deal in. Fortunately I acquired the music soundtrack on CD and was overjoyed with the quality. My only hope is that someone who cares about the wonderful photography and score will pick up the movie for distribution and clean up the picture and sound prior to re-release.
