The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)
Comparing to Harry Potter...
This is being compared to Harry Potter? That is completely ridiculous. Some idiotic critics are saying "This movie isn't like Harry Potter, therefore, it's terrible" This movie is an amazing example of a fantasy movie, and one that doesn't cut much out, unlike Harry Potter. This movie has great acting, especially by the dual-part playing Freddie Highmore, who loses his British accent quite convincingly. Also, Sarah Bolger and Mary-Louise Parker do superb jobs with their acting considering it's mostly a four-person cast. (Excluding voice overs) The special effects alone are amazing. If you don't like this movie, you have to admit, the special effects were amazing. If there were a sequel, I would most definitely see it as long as it has the same actors, special effects team, and director.
Cory in the House (2007)
Just Sad.
Disney Channel is just trying to get every last cent that they can out of a show by mooching it until there is less than 0 personality, originality, or fun left. Kyle Massey was a good actor on Raven, but not here. I think it's because he doesn't like it-I've noticed that when good actors are put into bad shows, they tend to be worse actors. The show lacks very many funny scenes altogether, and, although it's sad, the best actor is probably Madison Pettis, the seven year old. Also, Wizards of Waverly Place is pretty much the same to me. No originality whatsoever, but this is for Cory in The House, and in conclusion, I'd like to say.....poor Kyle.
Wizards of Waverly Place (2007)
Bland Unoriginality
Why is it that every company is trying to cash in on Harry Potter? Some of them were pretty good, (Spiderwick, Chronicles of Narnia) but others were awful. (Eragon, Seeker, Wizards of Waverly Place) I'm surprised it took Disney so long to pick this up, and what surprised me more was the acting. They hired people who had done brief acting jobs in previous Disney Channel shows/movies (Buffalo something, Raven, Hannah Montana) and assumed that the audience loved them. This is pretty unoriginal, and it sticks out like a sore thumb, i.e, the main character's actress's name is Selena Gomez. Watch This: Sabrina, The Teenage Witch/Selena, The Teenage Witch. Also, if Harry Potter started religious controversies, this will do that tenfold, because, not only is it inspiring witchcraft, but it's also inspiring sibling rivalry. Shame, shame.
Akeelah and the Bee (2006)
I'm Not Into Drama...But This Movie...Wow.
This is possibly my favorite movie ever. I don't like dramas very much...at all, but this movie has an air of comedy to it, and it goes deep into Akeelah's emotions as she progresses to the National Spelling Bee. Keke Palmer's amazing performance as Akeelah really highlights the movie, and if this doesn't spark her career, nothing will. This movie has, unexpectedly, inspired me to start spelling, and I'm going to the regional spelling bee in March, (2008) and I have this movie to thank, partly. Truly an amazing movie, and, don't be fooled by the "Drama" classification, because this movie is a perfect example of a film masterpiece. I give it a standing ovation for acting, directing, writing, and an all around good movie. Way to go, Starbucks
