War Z Day One (2013)
Good Writing!
I cam across this movie because I am a fan of zombie movies, so I though I would give it a try. Although it is a low budget film, I actually really enjoyed watching it. I though the writing was especially good! Most zombie pieces are action based and don't have much of a storyline, so when I go into seeing zombie genre films, this is what I am expecting. Again, this movie took me in the other direction. It is actually quite dramatic and makes you "feel." If you like the Walking Dead or anything like that, then this film is right up your ally. I would definitely recommend giving this movie a watch. You won't be sorry you did.
Ruby and the Dragon (2013)
Good and Great!
Came across this film and it looked interesting so I thought I would give it a watch. Within the first minute, it immediately draws your attention and makes you want to know the story. It is a very dark but powerful film and will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. It is definitely a drama and some parts are hard to watch or even think of, but that is what makes it stand out. About half way though the movie, I realized that the underlying plot is that the daughter is taking care of the dad in ways that she would have taken care of her little sister. I would recommend seeing this. It is a very emotional film but it is also definitely work seeing.
Zombie Hunter (2013)
Good Zombie Flick
I went into seeing this with an open mind since now-a-days, with all the advances in makeup and CGI, doing a zombie movie to compete with the others is somewhat of a challenge for any filmmaker. I was pleasantly surprised! Don't go into seeing this film thinking it is a drama with deep acting and story. This is just a fun movie to watch. Lots of action. Lots of blood. Lots of R- Rated stuff. This isn't a movie for the kiddies. It still has some big name actors, so you can relate to them when you are watching. If you are just in the mood for a good zombie/action/horror movie, give this one a watch. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Rushlights (2013)
Exciting and Suspenseful!
So, I was waiting on seeing this movie since I loved the casting and actor lineup for it. All I can say is "saw it and loved it." The whole plot of this film was great. I love movies where there are cons being played and a lot of twists and turns that take the viewer for a ride. There is plenty of action to satisfy any thrill seeker and enough good story to keep you on the edge of your seat wanting more. I especially loved the performances by Beau Bridges and Aidan Quinn. They are a couple of my favorites and it was so great seeing them in a film together and playing in this type of film. This movie is a must see for anyone!
Facebook Addiction Disorder (2012)
Great Film
In a world where Facebook is the second most visited website on the internet (side from Google), this instantly caught my eye, especially because I think we all know someone who has a "Facebook Disorder." This film does a great job to bring us inside the world of mental disorders and to show us that even things we many not think are a big deal, can actually cause detrimental mental effects on some people's minds. This film not only lets us see and hear the people being affected with this disorder, but also the doctors that are treating them. It is a definite wake-up call for those of us who think we may be spending too much time on Facebook. So this film does a great job of making the audience think and react to what they are watching.
Up in Arms (2011)
Very Fun!
I watched this because it looked interesting and that it might be funny. Man, was I right. The sketches mixed in with the social issues and topics, really get the point across, but in a light and informative way. It's not boring at all. There are lots of topics that are discussed and lots of different scenarios that we find ourselves in all the time. It was cool to see these things portrayed on screen and it has a kind of sensory-recall humor everyone can laugh at, since we've all be though these situations in one way or another. Some of the sketches are just comedic and don't have to do with a whole lot, but they are fun to break up the other videos. It is definitely worth a watch!
Heart of the Country (2013)
Jana Kramer = Amazing!
First off, I had no idea that Jana Kramer was such a good actress. I knew she was a fantastic singer, but she should act in a lot more films. This is a classic coming home story. It is based off of a book. I haven't read the book, but after seeing the movie, I am really wanting to go and read it. It is a great story. One with laughs, tears and a lot of emotion. It is a great date movie or a movie to go see if you or anyone who likes country music, since you will enjoy seeing Jana Kramer on the screen as well. I would highly recommend seeing this movie. If you like the country girl types of movies or just in a mood for a romantic movie, this is the one to see.
The Mirror (2011)
eerie and awesome!
First off, the music starting the movie instantly makes you interested and wondering what is going to happen. You can tell that it is setting something up. You're not sure what it is yet, but you want to keep watching to find out. The whole time you are thinking to yourself "oh man, I really hope he doesn't do it," even though you know he will. It was a very cool concept how he read the Lord's Prayer backwards and how the candle was still lit. It gave the whole feel a very intense emotion. After he did the action in the mirror, I wasn't sure what happened. When he ended up going into his wife's room, then I knew that the demon switched places with Simon. It had me guessing and at the edge of my seat the whole time.
Wingmen Incorporated (2013)
Funny, Funny Stuff!
For as low as the budget was, this movie was pretty damn entertaining. The group of guys were all as funny as hell. Just to name a few, Jason W. Schaver, Andrew Kudla, , Matt Babbs, and Heath Cordts were all fantastic in this film. I wished they all would have gotten more screen time! They were hilarious!
I could have lived without the love story though. I feel it really slowed the pacing down in spots. The guy that played Justin just wasn't very likable. And the girl that played Nora came off really bad. Their interactions seemed forced and poorly written. Didn't seem like they had any chemistry either. Plus Nora didn't do a good job at hiding her feelings for Justin while in front of her boyfriend (Conner). I don't think any normal person would be that obvious about it given the circumstances. I feel a lot of the Justin/Conner/Nora scenes were poorly written and a lot of the negative things Conner says in the bags scene is bad writing just to make Justin's character look better.
But the rest of the film was great! Could have used more Wingmen though! Lots of funny stuff!
We Are with the Band (2010)
Attractive Groupies
The show focuses on a pair of modern day groupies as they attempt to party their way through life while inevitably "living the dream." The two Los Angeles hipsters experience more misadventure than adventure when their names are not included on a nightclub's VIP list. There is a genuine chemistry between the two leads and the dynamics of the pair, with Elle as the leader and Marci as the follower, is played with a lovable charm that adds to the authentic feel of the series. Comparisons to another Los Angeles-based show that follows the lives of its female characters, Fourplay in LA, quickly come to mind. We Are with the Band also shares the same level of quality dialogue as Fourplay in LA and is filled with a plethora of catchy one-liners. Elle and Marci may be living a life of misadventure, but with strong acting, memorable dialogue and overall quality, the show itself is very enjoyable.
Rent a Rasta (2006)
Jah Mon! Food For Thought.
J. Michael Seyfert's cult film classic RENT A RASTA sheds light on a barely acknowledged form of sex tourism, claiming that as many as 80,000 females from a variety of wealthy Western nations visit Jamaica to get their groove back with the help of black locals. The film's central question is: "Who are the real Rastas and how do they feel about being marketed everything Jamaican". While this glimpse of the lucky ladies' rationale for their no-strings liaisons is certainly informative, the film is actually far more interesting when chronicling the history of Jamaica, winding its way from the slave days through the rise of the Rastafari to the present. Framed from this perspective, we suddenly see a persistent pattern of utter subjugation and economic inequality, with islanders providing stud service only being the latest form of exploitation. Perhaps most telling is the desperate summation of a suffering black woman seen begging for an end to the Jamaican people's never ending cycle of poverty. She wants, "the white world to come give us our deliverance, because it was them who take us out of our land and carry us here." Viewed in this light, Rent a Rasta is a clarion call which establishes that sex tourism is not merely the harmless indulgence of horny white women gone wild, but a burgeoning trend which continues to wreak havoc on a Caribbean culture and family structure already in crisis.
Bongwater (1998)
Bongwater is the 90s Portlandia!
This film is like the pre-cursor to Portlandia as it takes place in Portland and is an odd comedy. It is sort of like a mash-up of Wes Anderson meets Cheech and Chong movies. It's not a broad comedy, more of a deadpan and subtle look at Portland subculture in the 90s. There are also tons of good one- liners in the film and is a very likable movie. Richard Sears successfully piques one's curiosity from the beginning. I'm amazed by how overlooked this movie apparently is. Bongwater has a couple of dark moments, but is overall a very funny movie in the comedic vein of Seinfeld. Solid performance from Luke Wilson, and Jack Black cameo. See it to laugh about the absurd little things in life.
Reverend Charisma (2008)
Great! Love how it depicts the idea of the tragedy.
This film had such a great sense of mystery and wonder throughout it. It kept my attention with the effects and the visual elements. The actor who played Jim Jones put a great new twist on the tragedies at Jonestown. The film does a fantastic job at showing both sides of the cult idea. Its shows how people in the cult see it and how we see it from the outside. The music also did a great job of bringing us into the feeling that the people felt by being in the cult, while at the same time, the words and lyrics to the song have underlying meaning and really told the story of their beliefs. This is a great watch and is highly recommended.
