Luna Park (2021)
Please let there be a season 2!
I normally can't get into dubbed shows, but this one is so captivating that you forget it's dubbed. It's a perfect mix of characters, imagery, and soundtrack (I wonder if the Italian version has different songs than the American one?) resulting in a wonderful series within which to get totally immersed and lost. I REALLY hope there is a season 2, even if it is just a few episodes, because the cliffhanger at the end of season one can't be left that way! I need to know what happens next!
Spy (2015)
Exciting, funny, and fresh
The 1-star reviews can't be serious; this is a very good movie that I thoroughly enjoyed with its energy, humor, characters, and plenty of fight/chase scenes. Yes, there's swearing, violence, and a briefly cringe-worthy vomit scene, but honestly, they all work within the scenes and add to the movie. It also had a nice blend of both male and female actors, which is very refreshing to see in an action movie. There were a few times I would have preferred an alternate take (Susan enjoying the cat-callers, Aldo's unwanted advances, even Nancy's forceful attempts to kiss 50 Cent) but overall the majority of the movie feels competent and strong. I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out and have seen it a few more times at home. Every time I see it, I feel entertained and enjoy it.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Way better than I'd expected
I did not see this in the theater because I was a bit Sophie Turner-ed out after Game of Thrones, but after a few months saw it at home, with low expectations due to the poor ratings, and was pleasantly surprised! It was entertaining and I enjoyed the characters. Parts of it did seem reminiscent of the 3rd X-men movie, but so what? With all the remakes lately, who cares? Enough was different that it still was it's own movie, and did everything I'd expect a movie to do: entertain me, surprise me at parts, distract me from the real world, and show me Michael Fassbender. What it the greatest movie in the world? No. But, it was by far NOT the worst X-men movie, either (I'm looking at you, forgettable Apocalypse one), and I enjoyed it. I suspect much of the negative reviews about it have to do with having a female lead, which unfortunately seems to be an on-going trend with movie reviews. I'd give it a "7.5" if I could, but since I can't, I rounded my rating to "8".
Troop Zero (2019)
All the feels and laughs
Adored this. Completely charming and entertaining. Laughed, bawled, and yet at the end was filled with hope for humanity, which is a pretty big thing these days. Definitely worth the watch.
Charlie's Angels (2019)
Actually saw it, enjoyed a lot
I think a lot of the reviews coming in are from people who haven't even seen it, and are panning it simply because it involves women. I saw it and it was pretty good! It had nice references to the other Charlie's Angels productions, but took a new story approach. It was fun, fast, silly at the right times, and I left feeling good about the world and myself. That's a lot to get from one movie, so I was thoroughly happy with it. My husband also really enjoyed it, and it turned out to be a great date movie, which is considerably remarkable since it did not involve a romantic "guy gets girl" plot. Overall, very satisfied with going to see it and hope more movies like this exist in the future.
Ghostbusters (2016)
couldn't stop smiling watching this
I absolutely loved this movie and would see it ten more times. I found it funny, full of action, with a good storyline, paying nice homages to the original, having good special effects, having just enough startling moments to make you jump, and I left feeling like I could take on the world. Everyone (men, women, teens, and a handful of kids) leaving the theater had smiles on their faces and were discussing how much they loved it, as well. Whomever dislikes this movie just wants to dislike it for reasons that have nothing to do with the actual movie itself, but rather their own issues that they're projecting onto it. It was a bonus that the women in it were portrayed as smart, brave, capable, inventive, and strong. After seeing this, I want to have a proton pack and join the Ghostbusters myself. I thoroughly enjoyed it and want more movies like it!
