Catching Killers: Body Count: The Green River Killer (2021)
Glosses over key mistakes in the investigation
Completely ignores the mistakes made in this investigation that enabled GRK to go on for so long.
Early on in his spree, witnesses to the abduction of one of the victims searched for the car, searched the area found it within 24-48 hrs at the home address of Ridgway and alerted police. Police attended the house, questioned Ridgeway who said "noting to see here", and it was left at that.
(This was in addition to an incident where Ridgway choked a victim who escaped, was questioned, and believed when he said that there was nothing to see here).
That this critical mistake was not mentioned at all takes away any credibility of the episode.
Impractical Jokers: The Movie (2020)
Harmless fun, like the tv show
I was pleasantly surprised by this, if you like the tv show then you will like this.
If you have other expectations because it is a movie, you may not.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Brain dead plot, Cheesy, Transparent messaging, Extreme action and I loved it.
So this ticks all the current film ruining boxes:
- Diversity hires for cast and extras take away any semblance of believability from the start
- Plot is stupid and ridiculous, full of holes, and doesn't even try to escape the grandfather paradox. Cannot stress this enough - if you need believeability to enjoy a film, stay away.
- From the start, out of place mini scenes and characters obviously there to telegraph mid to late movie plot points
- Plot armour for the leads
- ******e *****e causes everything, didn't you know.
- Much of the dialogue is triple cheeseburger level of cheese
If you cant overcome any of the above, you will not like this film. I took off one star for all of them, whereas I completely understand how some may take off 9 stars for it.
Or if you don't like gore. Whilst the movie starts slow, you will know when it starts as the graphic brutality shows itself unexpectedly, and when its on this movie isnt afraid to dispose of flimsy humans (it keeps the blood levels low too so in a way it is "happy friendly" brutality).
If you can suspend the emotions due to the film ruiners above (or perhaps they aren't film ruiners for you), and you want a big SciFi (ish) blockbuster CGI monster film, this is for you.
The action is the best I've seen in years, the first monster reveal is superb (possibly the best ever), and I was able to enjoy this as a blockbuster and laugh at the stupidity of it all - the film rarely takes itself seriously, and when it does it is one of the telegraphed "insert emotion here" moments so you shouldn't be surprised by it.
Visuals, CGI is top notch, sound design is incredible, and I enjoyed much of the humour - its not sophisticated and doesn't break any new ground, but the actors pull it off.
Obviously films cannot be made by big companies now without some form of social or political messaging, and whilst it is here in the diversity of the cast - it didn't impact as the film is not trying to be Saving Private Ryan. In any case it is token as the film leans heavily on the "Americans are the only ones who can save the world" trope. Seriously, its 2021, why are Americans afraid of accents?
I will leave the ******e *****e one out of this so as not to spoil, but again it is not delivered in a preachy manner so it didn't bother me.
Summary: Very, very stupid film, and I loved it.
Avenue 5 (2020)
Outgrows a nervous pilot
Disclaimer - there is not much of Armando's work I do not like, so that may make me biased.
I was nervous after the pilot - the casting seemed strange, the acting seemed strange, and the premise seemed flimsy. As a few more plot points were revealed it began to make sense and the jarring nature of the pilot disappeared.
AI's signature wit is there in spades, the casting begins to make sense and the season progresses with intent. I still think Josh Cad has been miscast but everyone else is spot on.
This is not a Sci Fi comedy (S1 anyway) and did itself a disservice trying to capture that market - those seeking SciFi best head towards other offerings.
For me this very clearly is an IA comedy set in an unusual spot, that could evolve into SciFi if it is given enough chance to develop. It is much, much better in every way to its closest relative - the diabolically bad Space Force, but only if it is given time to be settled into.
Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000)
A close No. 2
There is this show, the current best in class (IASIP), and then there is daylight in TV comedy.
Larry David is a genius, I can rewatch this show over and over and still find details I havent seen before.
Probably not for the sqeamish or sensitive, this show successfully takes the spirit of the great British farce, loads it with US privilege, and delivers it through the eyes of a neurotic, filterless everyman.
Yes, one could be distracted or offput by the grotesque wealth and careless lives of the wealthy this show depicts, but this misses the point. For me it is a caricature, not an endorsement, and even grounds a lot of these types of people into behaviours I can relate to.
Finally, it goes without saying if you are a Seinfeld fan and want the real finale, this show delivers it perfectly.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005)
The Standard
For me this sets the standard and is the best TV Comedy there has been (Curb is the only one in touching distance).
Great Cast, Great Writing, Great Acting, Great Situations and presented with zero care for sensitivities, whilst also making pretty sharp observations of the absurdity of todays (American) society.
Very few misses throughout the entire catalogue, and the most recent season showed they still have it. Given the abundance of riches for more social commentary I hope there a many more seasons to come, and Macs apple money doesnt kill the series.
Perhaps not for the sensitive or squeamish as it does push the taste and trigger boundaries on occasion, so I can see why some would hate it.
The Mick (2017)
The best of the rest
IMHO this is the standout of the IASIP cast other shows, very different obviously but still retains a touch of the brands humour.
Caitlyn Olsen is tremendous (the best comedioso out there?) and rest of the cast is perfect for their roles, surely it had a few more seasons of juice before it got to community S6 or The Office S9 levels of stale.
Says a lot about modern TV that this gets canned, given the quality of most new tv comedies.
Maybe Mac can finance and bring it back now he has the sweet, sweet apple money.
