Hannah Gadsby: Something Special (2023)
Not funny
I watched both Nanette and Douglas (Hannah's previous Netflix specials), and I enjoyed parts of each show. I found myself laughing at the Art jokes quite a lot. Even some of the lesbian jokes were fun, but they also get tired fast.
But this special, was like watching paint dry! It was more like a chore.
There was a joke that got a chuckle out, but I forgot which one it was.
I don't get why she is repeating how good she is as a storyteller and how bad her wife is at telling stories. I got it the first time, it doesn't become funnier if you say if a bunch of times.
The jokes are very mild and boring, definitely not worthy of such a large audience. But maybe I just didn't get it?
Mafia Mamma (2023)
What a ride
I'm not even sure how to review this movie, but will try my best.
-The plot starts interesting, but falls in the abyss quickly.
-The actors seem ridiculous
-The idea that the main character becomes a "badass" killer is outrageous after seeing her behaviour in the first 20 minutes of the film.
-The wine company gets on its feet in around three months?
You can't grow an entire new batch of grapes and make better wine in a couple of months, not to mention start selling it and seeing improvement in the sales...so that idea is pointless.
-The medicine business also is pointless as again it takes much longer to establish a business.
-The movie makes no sense and it's not even funny. I couldn't even smile at any of the jokes.
-The husband was pathetic
-And lastly I think it tries to portray this feminist idea that women can do anything, bla bla. I'm definitely not opposed to this idea as I am a woman myself, but just throwing random ideas and trying to make them work is not empowering. They push this idea that a people pleasing and gentle woman arrives in Italy and gets really good at killing, running two businesses and getting the respect of Mafia..And she becomes a boss lady in three months. I'm just tired of this narrative...regardless if the main character is a man or a woman.
Just create characters that we can relate to, not these idiotic over the top people who can do anything in no time and with no effort.
Beef (2023)
Finally, a good series!
This series is creative, interesting and unusual. It draws you in from the first minute and hooks you until the end.
Lately, most series and movies seem disappointing and empty, but "Beef" is ridiculously well written. Loved the actors, music and characters.
You can see the thought and attention that went into this project. I also wasn't expecting Allie Wong to be so amazing in a dark role. To be honest I didn't know she was an actress. I watched her stand-ups, but she is a very talented actress.
Definitely worth watching. I feel like this should be a mini series, no season 2 please. That's how you write a series :D.
